GDB LI: Not another black Tuesday...

Jason Gregor
January 26 2010 11:55AM

Will we witness another black Tuesday tonight at Rexall Place? On Dec 16, 2008 the Blackhawks strolled into Rexall Place and demolished the Oilers 9-2. The Hawks scored four PP goals, one SH goal and four EV goals. It was a debacle of monumental proportions, to quote Craig MacTavish.

The Hawks are 2-0 so far this year against the Oilers and tonight they enter Rexall for game six of an eight-game road trip. The Hawks are 3-2 on the trip so far, but are coming off a 5-1 loss in Vancouver. The Hawks sit second in the NHL and their depth is comparable to Wanye’s knowledge of the exact ratio of alcohol to food intake that a human can have while remaining coherent. So yes, the Hawks are a deep team.

Tonight won’t be the most watched battle of the season between these two, because they face off Mar 3 in Chicago: Trade Deadline Day. Twelve teams will be in action that night including every other NW division team, the Flyers, Capitals, Panthers, Ducks, Wings and Sabres.

After next Monday’s Thirst for First tilt v. Carolina, Mar 3 will be the most anticipated game of the season for the Oiler faithful. Who will remain an Oiler? Will there be some new young blood, or will the future be built with draft picks? Or will Steve Tambellini have struck out? The latter is not an option.

The Oilers will need their best effort tonight just to avoid getting embarrassed. The Hawks don’t have any glaring weaknesses, except some whispers about their goaltending. The Hawks have the fourth best PP at 25.9%, while their road PK is average at 80% good for 19th in the league. They have the league’s best home PK at 91.6% and are fourth overall.

The Oilers are seventh best at home on the PP with a respectful 21.6% efficiency, while their home PK is atrocious at 74.2% good for 28th in the league. If the Oilers can draw some penalties they should make a game of it tonight.

Who's in?

The Oilers had 15 skaters and the goalies on the ice this morning and didn’t do any line drills. Shawn Horcoff, Ethan Moreau, Fernando Pisani, Sheldon Souray and Lubomir Visnovsky didn’t skate, but did a light off-ice work out.

Mike Comrie and Gilbert Brule both skated but they were the last two on the ice, which means neither will play tonight. Jeff Deslauriers will get the assignment to try and get the Oilers their second win in twenty games.

Taylor Chorney was recalled yesterday and will play because Steve Staios and Ladislav Smid are still out with concussion issues.

The Trade Watch

The Blackhawks have to make a move when they activate Dave Bolland and the sense amongst the Chicago beat guys is that Stan Bowman will either make a big move, possibly going after Kovalchuk and dump off nine or million dollars to the Thrashers, or he will make a small move to get under the cap and stick with this team.

It seems obvious that Bowman will have to move two of Cam Barker, Kris Versteeg, Dustin Byfuglien and Patrick Sharp and maybe three of them. In the summer he won’t get face value because every team knows they are in a cap crunch, so he might be better off to ship a few of those guys to the Thrashers and take Kovalchuk for the playoffs, even though it is unlikely they could re-sign him.

The Hawks haven’t sipped from the Stanley Cup since 1961, the longest drought in the NHL, and this might be the year to go for broke. While the Oilers, Hurricanes and Leafs will be selling guys off in the next month, the Blackhawks might make a big move.

I'm hoping there is a massive power outage tonight and the game gets postponed till next year. Perhaps then the Oilers can ice a NHL caliber team.

Why can't the last two guys off the ice be someone that is dedicated to staying late after practice? Hmmm last time we had 2 wins in twenty games we ended up with Gagner.

Going to be a tough one to watch tonight, but I enjoy watching Chicago play.

Hopefully Tambellini will be able to get his hands on at least one of Barker/Byfuglien/Sharp.

Hey Gregor with Souray due to make 4.5million the next two years I think it would make him more attractive to a team that has lots of cap space but less actual money to spend. People can say that the 5.4 million cap hit is high (I think it is maybe only slightly inflated) but at 4.5 million I think that is fair for him. What do you think?

I wouldn't worry too much about $$'s. I was figuring last night that within the next 2 years (maybe even next year) the team will have 12 or so guys on the 22 man roster for give or take 21 million. I'm pretty confident they can fill out the other 10 for 35+ million.

Anyone read the hockeynews article by Ryan Kennedy?

Can either guy go to the minors? I thought they played too many games already.

Listening to Oilers Lunch now and Stauffer just mentioned that the Oilers and Canes have lost the most man games in the league due to injury and they sit last and 2nd last in the league.

I know that injuries are an excuse. But if this very team started the season like this would anyone predict them to finish anywhere but last. I don't think so.

Having said that there are still some major problems on this team but we don't have to blow it up.

Kennedy is an idiot, both players would have to clear waivers as far as I know and Gagner has been one of our best forwards as of late, throwing them into the A on the worst team in the league won't do much for their confidence anyways. This writer probably doesn't even follow the Oilers.

What is that guy smoking?!? Does he watch the games or only look at the scoresheet.

Gagner is coming along nicely and one of the only bright spots on the team right now. Cogliano has struggled, but his game has gotten much better this year on a number of levels, there just isn't any finish.

I think either of them would need to clear waivers anyway so the point is moot.

Shooter Tutor?! We can do that?! Holy capspace, Batman; hurry and trade all three of our current goalies for one of those things ASAP. We can pay Tory Jung a dollar a day to ride backup in case of a tear - actually scrap that. A tear isn't so bad. Anyway, we gain a boatload of capspace, the DFF is still in full force, and no one can accuse us of deliberately tanking games because our save% will probably actually rise. It's win-win-win!

Mr. Katz will benefit from more box seating.

It does not matter the amount of games played by Gagner or Cogs, they could still be sent down to AHL, they are on (wo way contracts. You are thinking about the rule of not being allowed to be sent to junior hockey, players on 2 way contracts never have to clear waivers to be sent down to the AHL! I hope this clears up all misconceptions regarding this issue from this day til the Oilers win a cup again!

I may be wrong here, and forgive me if I am, but doesn't a two way mean that if they do get sent down the team doesn't have to pay them NHL salary? Isn't that the big stink with Pouliot because he's got a one way, so no matter where he plays he gets his full salary? Again, I could be wrong.

Are people suprised by this? Take a bubble team and sprinkle injuries throught the roster and you've got a lotto team. Take an elite team (or close) and sprinkle injuries throught the roster and you've got 6/7/8/9 place team.
