GDB LI: Not another black Tuesday...

Jason Gregor
January 26 2010 11:55AM

Will we witness another black Tuesday tonight at Rexall Place? On Dec 16, 2008 the Blackhawks strolled into Rexall Place and demolished the Oilers 9-2. The Hawks scored four PP goals, one SH goal and four EV goals. It was a debacle of monumental proportions, to quote Craig MacTavish.

The Hawks are 2-0 so far this year against the Oilers and tonight they enter Rexall for game six of an eight-game road trip. The Hawks are 3-2 on the trip so far, but are coming off a 5-1 loss in Vancouver. The Hawks sit second in the NHL and their depth is comparable to Wanye’s knowledge of the exact ratio of alcohol to food intake that a human can have while remaining coherent. So yes, the Hawks are a deep team.

Tonight won’t be the most watched battle of the season between these two, because they face off Mar 3 in Chicago: Trade Deadline Day. Twelve teams will be in action that night including every other NW division team, the Flyers, Capitals, Panthers, Ducks, Wings and Sabres.

After next Monday’s Thirst for First tilt v. Carolina, Mar 3 will be the most anticipated game of the season for the Oiler faithful. Who will remain an Oiler? Will there be some new young blood, or will the future be built with draft picks? Or will Steve Tambellini have struck out? The latter is not an option.

The Oilers will need their best effort tonight just to avoid getting embarrassed. The Hawks don’t have any glaring weaknesses, except some whispers about their goaltending. The Hawks have the fourth best PP at 25.9%, while their road PK is average at 80% good for 19th in the league. They have the league’s best home PK at 91.6% and are fourth overall.

The Oilers are seventh best at home on the PP with a respectful 21.6% efficiency, while their home PK is atrocious at 74.2% good for 28th in the league. If the Oilers can draw some penalties they should make a game of it tonight.

Who's in?

The Oilers had 15 skaters and the goalies on the ice this morning and didn’t do any line drills. Shawn Horcoff, Ethan Moreau, Fernando Pisani, Sheldon Souray and Lubomir Visnovsky didn’t skate, but did a light off-ice work out.

Mike Comrie and Gilbert Brule both skated but they were the last two on the ice, which means neither will play tonight. Jeff Deslauriers will get the assignment to try and get the Oilers their second win in twenty games.

Taylor Chorney was recalled yesterday and will play because Steve Staios and Ladislav Smid are still out with concussion issues.

The Trade Watch

The Blackhawks have to make a move when they activate Dave Bolland and the sense amongst the Chicago beat guys is that Stan Bowman will either make a big move, possibly going after Kovalchuk and dump off nine or million dollars to the Thrashers, or he will make a small move to get under the cap and stick with this team.

It seems obvious that Bowman will have to move two of Cam Barker, Kris Versteeg, Dustin Byfuglien and Patrick Sharp and maybe three of them. In the summer he won’t get face value because every team knows they are in a cap crunch, so he might be better off to ship a few of those guys to the Thrashers and take Kovalchuk for the playoffs, even though it is unlikely they could re-sign him.

The Hawks haven’t sipped from the Stanley Cup since 1961, the longest drought in the NHL, and this might be the year to go for broke. While the Oilers, Hurricanes and Leafs will be selling guys off in the next month, the Blackhawks might make a big move.

I may be wrong here, and forgive me if I am, but doesn't a two way mean that if they do get sent down the team doesn't have to pay them NHL salary? Isn't that the big stink with Pouliot because he's got a one way, so no matter where he plays he gets his full salary? Again, I could be wrong.

True, a two way contract means the player would receive one payment if he is on the big club and a smaller payment if he is on the farm.

Most guys who are on 2 way contracts are guys who are still free from having to clear waivers as there isn't much point in signing a player who has to clear waivers to a 2 way contract unless you are willing to lose him to waivers.

@Garett

That is one thing about that game. They made it pretty tough to make trades, but they don't have the waiver thing figured out. I personally prefer the old waiver system of one-way and two-way deals.

That's not really what I'm talking about though.

Det/Edmonton aren't equals when both rosters are healthy, so I don't know why people would expect them to be equals when both rosters are depleted.

Tired of watching an Edmonton based company fail? Try playing Mass Effect 2 (Developed by BioWare right here in Edmonchuk) on PC or xbox 360. All the fun of supporting your city, but without watching Tom Gilbert let opposing forwards take the puck from him behind the net.

The game is amazing; And just because I've worked on ME2 for the last 6 months doesnt mean I'm biased ;)

Random CBA stuff. If you have noticed in the last few months, there have been many callers and posters on this site that aren't aware of certain CBA rules. I too have a question or two. Is that not his job or this wouldn't make for good radio?

Did enjoy Simpson yesterday, meet him numerous times and he seems to be a pretty classy guy. I'd like to catch Bucky today, but I'm not sure what time he is on.

His salary is what matter if a team has their own internal budget like Dallas. They wont care about his cap hit because they wont be near the cap if they are only willing to pay out 45-50 million in salary. So his 5.4 cap hit is bad but his 4.5 salary can seem ok to the right team.

I personally doubt there's much interest in Souray at the deadline. He hasnt had a great year and their are still concerns about injuries. Besides his shot and a little bit of physical play now and then what does he bring? I think he may be too much of a risk for anyone until the off season at the earliest.

I know that injuries are an excuse. But if this very team started the season like this would anyone predict them to finish anywhere but last. I don't think so.

Having said that there are still some major problems on this team but we don't have to blow it up.

Stauffer gets paid by Katz now, so he has to be on top of all the excuses

So are we blowing this up or what?

As far as trades go, who really has any value on this team? Souray? The hammer has netted him 4 big goals on the year. For him to submit a list of destinations is a joke, who wants to take a $5.4 cap hit for the next 2 years on a guy that has missed more games than he's played in?

Maybe it's Penner? I think he has the most lust in the trade market right now - I'd utilize that lust and offer him up to anyone talking. Now is the time to deal him, his value will never get any higher. Let's just hope no one else see's the bait, the same guy who's been tearing it up this year has 5 points in the last 14 games. Enough said.

If D.Sutter managed to pawn off Jim Vandermeer and his nasty 2.3M contract in the offseason - I think its not out of the realm of possibility someone takes a flyer on Staois/Moreau. Both need to be gone, asap. And if it can't be done via trade, buy them out.

And my last observation is this. Why the hell does everyone give the benefit of the doubt to Daryl Katz based on his business success. He succeeds that which he can control. With a sports franchise, you cannot control the performance of the product. Everything won't work out in the end, because we don't have the product that will succeed. And neither Katz nor his money can ever fix that.

The Oilers are losing quite a few right now - I don't think that many fans are going to be broken up by losing to the 2nd best team in the league.

Also, I don't even think that qualifies as "bad news".

I don't think that was close to their worst game of the season. They got 44 shots on Luongo which was almost double the amount of shots Vancouver had. It was more of a "Luongo decided to show up that night and Niemi did not" kind of scenario.

But don't fret, the Canucks are making themselves look more and more hilarious with all these awesome accusations, snubbing HNIC like a bunch of teen girls, etc. Their yearly second round playoff exit will come soon enough.

I think BioWare is hiring right now for QA. There are guys in the room i'm in right now with all kinds of University backgrounds. English degrees, Fine Arts, Computer Sciences, one Electrical Engineer, and I have a couple degrees in Archaeology. I've been reading it right the whole time, but I confess I'm a bit fuzzy on the pronunciation; is it Guy like the French 'Guy Lafleur' (rhymes with bee) or is it Guy like 'just some random guy on the street' (rhymes with buy)? The first sounds better, but loses some flash if you're not really French.
