EXCITING LAST PLACE HOCKEY DEBATE

Wanye
October 26 2010 09:52PM

We submit the following points of order:

  • Although it didn't result in a shootout win, that was seriously one hell of a comeback.
  • Jordan Eberle is miles in the lead as the best rookie on the team, with MPS in a solid second place.
  • If you agree that the plan for the season is to play 82 games of Last Place Hockey, then that was a dandy of a game.
  • Flames Broadcasts are mind numbingly sterile. Seriously.

Feel free to discuss.

It isn't even right of Sportsnet to have those two clowns running a broadcast together. I think they are worse than the Philadelphia broadcasters were in the playoffs last year.

They are incredibly biased, at one point I do believe they said that Pajaarvi is the kind of player to only score greasy, or garbage goals. Sure that first goal he scored was and the second one wasn't that pretty, but shouldn't they know a player before they make ridiculous claims. Other than that though Eberle's goal and the third period was awesome last place hockey!

Peter Loubardias getting all excited about that harmless puck going high in the air, followed by a long drawn out explanation of his misguided excitement, was classic Loubardias. He makes Kevin Quinn sound like a hall of famer.

And Simmer makes Garrett look like the most un-biased man on the planet. Absolutely unreal.

I'll tell you this much I was ready to throw in the towel after watching about 73 back-to-back giveaways in their own end while the Oilers were on the PP.

60 or so more games of hard fought losses please!

Complaining about bad, biased Flames broadcasts is like complaining about the weather. You can't stop it, it's gonna happen. All you can do is deal with it and not let it kill you.

a) I'll take Peter Loubardias over Kevin Quinn ANY day.

b) Charlie Simmer is THEE worst color man in hockey.

c) Ever stop and think how a Flames fan might watch the Oilers crew under the same circumstances and come away thinking that crew was totally stupid & biased.

d) ALL THE ABOVE.

I can deal with a biased broadcast as long as its good. Those guys were biased and technically awful. The color guy, who ever the heck he is, can't even formulate a sentence. My 5 year old brother could have done a better job.

Awful telecast. Roger Millions (of cheeseburgers, apparently) seems to have pretty much given up on life after the infamous "C*******ER!" scandal. Charlie Simmer, at least, was bad in a funny (not sad) way: "Nice job by White with the Toe Jam! Errr, I mean toe drag!" Thankfully White didn't make it to the shootout and score, or we would have no doubt been subjected to an in-depth analysis of his signature head cheese--errr head FAKE--move.

D is the obvious answer. I can't imagine what Flames fans think of Pun Happy Principe - the poor man's Ron Maclean!

B though is the right answer. Simmer is bush league. Loved it when Peter said "Big faceoff coming up." and Simmer said "thanks tips." WTF was that?!

a) If you're going to take Loubardias, can you please take him somewhere very warm where ice is scarce and the threat of him contracting malaria is more likely than the threat of him calling a hockey game.

b) agreed

c) Flames fans watch a game and come away thinking? I'm not following the premise.

d) STOP YELLING AT ME

EDIT: upon further thought, I now disagree with b. The CBC's Kevin Weekes or Cassie Campbell are significantly worse. Scientific fact: Cassie Campbell is the worst person on the planet.

Loubardias, Quinn, Lee. They're are all atrocious. I'm going to start listening to Jack while watching the game... problem is the TV is usually delayed about 5-10 seconds versus radio.

The PVR shall save me. Appropriate application of pausing till I find acceptably close sync and I am forever saved from the pinched tonal dissonance that is Loubardias' voice.

Should have been studying. Almost cracked opened the books at the end of the second. Thank you thekidprodigyjordaneberle.

I have to say, though, that the most inspiring part of the game was on the last faceoff of the second period. After Calgary iced the puck with a couple seconds left, they cut to Eberle who's screaming at Horcoff to make sure the clock's time was right.

It's beautiful to see these kids care so much about winning that, down by two with a period to play, they're fighting for a few tenths of a second.

Oh yeah, and Roger Million is awesome.

I honestly didn't think Lombardias was that bad in past broadcasts for jr. hockey. But this broadcast was embarrassing. I'm thinking that Simmer guy is sucking him down to the lowest broadcast level possible. Lombardias is usually pretty exciting to listen to (sometimes a bit over the top) but usually keeps the game flow going, but Simmer made some retarded remarks that just ruined the whole game. I wish I recorded it so I could go back and hear all the stuid sh*t he said! Looks like a decent list has already been posted on the comments above! Exciting 3rd period though! Nice comeback, too bad it came up just a bit short. Penner in the shoot out?? Come on... Penner?? For real? Man, even Horcoff could have gone out there and did his patented five-hole special! Oh well... can we play someone other than Calgary soon?

Squeaky Lobardias is absolutely grating.

"He (insert mid high mid octave rant here)Scoo (higher)oooo (higher yet)ooor (drop down)es"

--- Now... What the heck was the D doing tonight?

Covering wrong people, bad giveaways, taking the long way...

Thought Gilbert was best out there though - pasted a few on the boards and controlled the puck well.

Exciting Last Place Hockey - if Jacques Lemaire figured out it was about "Entertainment" and not "Winning 1 - 0", he might still be working.

Exciting last place hockey is so much better than I imagined. I was losing my mind a little after the Special (read: short bus special) Teams spotted the Flames 3 goals, but that's good news. Eventually these guys will learn how to kill a penalty.

As I return from the Saddledome, 7 Whiskeys heavier and 50 dollars lighter, I realise one thing, That is one heck of an exciting hockey team to watch lose.

I cheered all night, got under the skin of at least a dozen flames fans and joined 30+ other faithful in chanting Let's go Oilers louder than the flamers around us could retort,

If a top five pick is the result of watching this brand of entertaining hockey, count me in.

Let's Go Oilers!!!!

*I have to admit, I didn't watch the WHOLE game, but I was impressed to see them come back from 4-1, which is when I stopped watching until the 3rd

* I agree with your Eberle take. I think he "could" be the best in the league...for sure he is after 6 games.

* Today forward starts the #FFNH, or the Fall for Nugent Hopkins. Then we can have a play making centerman, & Horcoff can play 3rd line minutes & tell stories to the kids about the "olden days"

* Hey Charlie Simmer, everyone calls back checking BACK CHECKING?!?!?! It is not back pressure

@goosejr.

Yeah I agree goosejr. I like Loubardias is great for WHL games. Just because he can be less homerish in those games and for some reason his voice just reminds me of WHL hockey.

Also Sportsnet just seems to be the most amateurish, unprofessional channel of any kind on TV today. Just garbage on every level. Name one personality on that network who any other sports channel would consider hiring and I will applaud you.

Because the second Jones or any other Oiler touches Glencross he'd go down like he's shot to draw a penalty. Can't really blame him with our PK.

I want to hear some serious Sam Gagner appreciation tonight, people. He had a nice game.

I loved when Millions gave props to Jokinen for fighting Gagner for his hit on Stajan, then when Fraiser fought Giordano for his hit on Hall, he was says (paraphrased) "its a shame the game has come to a point where you have to fight after a clean hit." Serious?

Also; to stand by my goat pick; damn you Souray. Had you not broke your hand in that fight, you wouldn't have made the media divert the teams attention from the upcoming game to focus on you. Damn you and your big ego.

~i guess most greasy goals are born from chest high passes taken at full speed, going to the net holding off the dman and one handing it over the greatest goalie who ever lived~

It would be a rather curious exercise to see how it would be deemed had Backlund done anything remotely similar.

If yah hates petie lou.. yah gotta check out domebeers... he slams the crypt keeper with tremendous flair.

Think the Oilers could package up Penner and Cogs for me cuz the more I watch them the more I get frustrated...Peckham was a beast tonight with the hits even tho he got a penalty called on the Tanguay hit, also put Iginla on his back.

Eberle is amazing and MPS is starting to really fit in. Also just wondering why Renney put MPS back with Cogs and Brule and moved up Hall? think it was to get Hall his first goal?

@RossCreekNation

Seriously dude you are waaaaay out to lunch on this one. Quinn and Debrusk are way less biased than the flamer's broadcast team. Loubardias practically creamed his pants every time the flames would throw a mild body check, such as when "Sarich absolutely levels Hall!", seriously the dude only rubbed Hall out, Taylor never even fell down. Then when Peckham absolutely destroys 4 flames such as Iginla, he just barely mentions it, or doesn't even mention it at all. The dude is a joke, if i ever see him in public i won't be afraid to call him the biggest homer in the world.

-How Jokinen was talked up for sending a message to the tiny Gagner when if you watch the replay you see Jokinen cross-check Gagner then start to skate away. It's actually Gagner who drops the gloves and makes Olli fight.

-On the Eberle goal the color guy was talking about how well Ian White did on the play when it was painfully obvious that Eberle hit another gear and left White on his heels and off balance.

-Eberle's shootout attempt had Kipper beaten, he just didn't get the puck over the pad. The comment was something to the effect of "Kipper with another big poke check, NO CHANCE"

Just a very few things off the top of my head that pissed me off during the game, not to mention how consistently names were gotten wrong. I was getting so mad at the broadcasters (the Oilers for the first two periods also) I ended up calling my brother just to vent to someone. I'm glad it wasn't just me who noticed how bad it was.

I find all the hockey commenting very annoying and useless, from CBC, TSN(ESPN) and Sportsnet.

I do not believe the game should be broadcast with that much talking. There is no need for them to commentate like their viewers are blind.

Way too many times during the game/play you will hear anyone of the following stating the obvious.

"Behind the net." " Dumps it in" Shoots it along the boards" "Back to the point" "Off the boards" and so on and so on.....

The most annoying part is the amount of times they will tell you the players name, even thou you can clearly see his number and maybe even his name on your modern day HDTV.

The commentators and announcers aren't even skilled at their craft, most of them spend a lot time excusing the seIves for their mess-ups. It is just constant useless verbal diarhea that takes away more from the game then it adds.
