MOVEMBER AND THINKING (UPDATED)

Wanye
October 27 2010 04:41PM

Many moons ago, prior to the litany of calendar reforms of various Emperors of Rome, November was the 9th month of the Roman Calendar. Because 'nine' in Latin is pronounced "November" the month got it's name and very little has changed since.

43,000 years later, Western Society has decided to go against the expressed orders of the Roman Emperors and rename the thing Movember. Why? For charity it seems.

MOVEMBER DONATIONS

Firstly Citizen rubbertrout got into the movember business, sending us an email getting the word out that he was prepared to have his corporate website photo for 2011 include his moustache if he hit certain targets. We thought this was quite hilarious and would encourage people to donate to him here.

Then we heard about Meg Morrison signing Gregor up to the Movember challenge without his consent. Gregor blew a fuse on air and spent a good handful of minutes explaining he can't grow a good moustache if his life depended on it. We had a good laugh listening to this and tried to picture Gregor with a moustache.

Then Team 1260 Big Wig Ross Mcleod heard about the challenge, called Meg and told her that if she is able to raise $2,000 he will make Bob Stauffer, Dustin Nielson, Kyle Chase, Corey Graham and Wil Fraser grow 'staches too.

We all give Stauffer a hard time here on the Nation, but the fact that he and the other on air hosts are willing to grow the old soup strainer in the name of charity reveals his character to be sound.

Apparently Gregor wants Stauffer to grow a stache so bad he has already kicked in $100.

If you want to help in the fight against Cancer and see your favourite radio guys rocking staches, please make your donations here.

UPDATE: JSBM JOINS THE FIGHT

Our good friends at jeanshortsandbaggedmilk.com have just weighed in to the battle saying that they are "incapable of growing facial hair, but will donate any and all profits from their t-shirts during the month of Movember. If you haven't seen their awesome collection of tshirts for sale, you should pop over.

Not only are you the sexiest person you know in a JSBM tee, you are also now helping a good cause. Kudos JSBM.

SOME OTHER STUFF

  • Kurtis Foster scores his first goal and then leaves the game 10 seconds later with the flu. If that is what playing with the flu gets you, we heartily suggest he sneezes in the face of each of the Oilers in the upcoming days. Except Jordan Eberle, who needs no flu to put the biscuit in the basket.
  • Doth our eyes deceive us? Is Ryan Whitney the leading point getter for the mighty Oil? That is worth some mad respect right there. The Lubo trade is starting to look very good, very good indeed.

I'm also doing the Mo in Movember, along with some pals. Our team will be going by the name "Me Mo Aint Just Fo Sho". Not trying to solicit donations, but suggest others get involved one way or another. Not that anyone should need an excuse to rock a stache, but if you do, this is it.

Lubo and Whitney tied for scoring right now. Lubo -3, Whitney even. This trade has worked out for both teams to date.

43,000 years later? Nine in Latin is pronounced November? ~I knew my Master's Degree in Roman Archaeology would come in handy one day.~

Nine in Latin is Novem. It is pronounced No-Wem. The month is November.

The western Roman Empire ended in the 5th century AD, so you were only off by about 41,500 years.

I whined about this on Gregor's show today. Unless Stortini or Mike Peca sign up, I'd wax this collection of baby-faced stiffs easy.

@Robin Brownlee

There's no shame in being out `stached by Stortini. He could make Frank Zappa look pre-pubescent - I always thought that the "bear" part of his huggy-bear moniker was more appropriate.

And speaking of Stortini, do you have any sense as to how he's lost the confidence of the coaching staff? (If you think he has, that is.) Granted it was in a limited capacity, but by my eye he seemed to be making progress last year as a fourth line player. He still has the grit that is often lacking in the rest of the roster, so do they see holes in other aspects of his game that aren't as apparent to us unwashed masses?

No, he hasn't lost the confidence of the coaching staff but he's had too many breakdowns that have ended up in the net early on. Death for a fourth-liner.

He'll bounce back and do what he does.

Thanks for the publicity Wanye.

Anyone who donates gets weekly photo updates.

If I get to $15,000 I'm keeping the 'stache until I leave for Xmas vacation.

If I get to $25,000 I'm changing my work website photo to include the moustache shot for a full year.

Thanks for considering this.

RT

EDIT: Any of you guys with Mo sites I'll match the contributions you make to my site on yours (max $50 each). Just put your commenter name on the notes for the donation and I'll come back to this thread to find your sites.

Wanye, I admire the commitment, but if I may offer a suggestion...your facial hair has not exactly corresponded to great success for the Oil. So...possibly if you were to suggest that if x $'s were contributed to getting Gregor to grow a stache, you could shave yours off & donate the proceeds from the empties laying around stately Wanye manor to the cause as well. Maybe we can cure a horrible disease & a terrible penalty kill at the same time.

I'm a long time reader, first time blogger, and I have to respectfully disagree with you on this one Wanye!! I've watched Whitney create bad turn over after bad turn over, and whats worse, he does it in our zone, and more ofter than not right beside or in front of our net! Can he get better at getting the puck out of our zone? Lets hope so! I'd prefer Whitney with 0pts and half his turn overs at this point!

You're supposed to start fresh. Nobody is keeping score, but if you are going to just shave the goat I would suggest there be something pretty impressive after a month of just stache growth, plus whatever it took to get there in the first place.

The first thing that comes to my mind is a stache that resembles Rolly Fingers...

Alas, no longer. Electronic Arts has a fun little policy that says contract workers can only be employed for a year. After said year those employees must "take 3 months off" before being eligible to work again. After a 2nd year of work at EA I will never be eligible to work as a contract employee for them ever again.

So right now I'm in my 3 months off. Not sure if I'll go back because I'm guaranteed to be scr*wed after a year anyway.

I'm gonna grow my lip bumper and see how it looks. I normally go with the weekend scratchy beard then I trim down to the goat and then I shave it all off. I rocked the mustache for one day around the house and the wife always looked at me funny and was about to bust out laughin. I guess November will be a funny month around our household as I'm gonna give it a go.

I'd love it if I could grow one of them frenchman bicycle handle tip stache's cuz that would look so pervy and cool, but alas I don't think I am close to the missing link enough.

Good luck with your staches' everyone. And open your wallets if you can!!
