GDB 14.0: Oilers in Motor City

Lowetide
November 11 2010 11:50AM

Thank you. To the men and women who serve our country with courage and bravery we thank you. Before any puck is dropped, before we talk about the great game, before we post the lineups we thank our military past and present.

The Edmonton Oilers are showing all the traits of young teams. Wild inconsistency--not just game to game, but period to period and shift to shift--along with repeating mistakes to the point of distraction. After the Carolina game, the tendency is to believe it'll be a blood bath this evening (weird start time btw, 5:30 our time in Gordie's town) based on how badly the team played.

However, the game story for the Oilers this season is a lot about the the kids not getting in their own way. If the Oilers can put a solid effort together they have a chance to win most games. Tonight will be a tough one; Detroit is 7-3-0 in their last 10 games and have some hot hands on offense (Lidstrom has 10 points in his last 10 games; Cleary 5 points in his last 3 games; Datsyuk 7 in his last 5 and Zetterberg 13 points in his last 9 games) plus the defense is extremely difficult to score on (2.62 per game).

Detroit's Chris Osgood (groin) is injured but other than that the team is pretty much healthy. You can see the roster slowly changing at the bottom end, with names like Abdelkader, Darren Helm and Jakub Kindl working their way into the everyday lineup. Beautiful, textbook elevation of productive players. It's like Sam Pollock left the Bible for Ken Holland.

The Oilers forward group apparently looks like this:

  • Gagner centering Penner and Hemsky
  • Cogliano centering Hall and Eberle
  • Brule centering Pääjärvi and Jones
  • Fraser and Stortini working in when they can

The Oilers will go with 7 defensemen this evening (according to reports) so they could ice a 4line that might include Smid or Strudwick. Steve MacIntyre is a healthy scratch and once again we see the downside of having an enforcer on the roster: he is not a useful took against a team like Detroit. Horcoff's injury will be a major factor in tonight's game, and of course the PK and PP will play their usual roles as "death" and "death warmed over" for the Oilers this evening.

I'm no Kreskin, but there WILL be a bunch of UFO's over Vegas tonight. Or tomorrow night. Maybe Saturday. Certainly soon.

I don't like predicting final scores at the best of times and picking against the Oilers any time goes against the grain for me. 5-0 Detroit.

NHL players are men. That is all.

Tonight I'm looking for the Oilers to have a positive game. Now that doesn't mean a win but executing would be a great step forward.

Cut down on the bad/negative crap and play with some passion.

Also I'd like to see the Canucks let 5+ and get 1 or less tonight.

Did I mention I really hate that team?

Cheers.

I agree Mac is lacking in "skill" and no playing him against the wings doesnt make sense. But. how hard is it to hit someone??? if the puck isnt going in then the hurt should be there. I dont think there will be this amazing turn around this game.. i think the boys will play good but geez its the wings.. and for whatever reason we get up for th big games but sleep through the "not so big games"

GO OIL!!!!!!!!!!!1

2-0, Detroit. About what we could have expected tonight, the Red Wings are superior everywhere. I like the effort from the kids tonight but our blue isn't big, strong or good enough to handle this team.

Renney with a timeout.

Two games in a row he used his timeout in the first period. Not a huge fan of trend.

Yeah that's more what I meant. The fact that he felt he needed to use it in the first place this early two games in a row is, in a word, startling.

Bertuzzi, Clearly and Modano on one line. If that line gets less than 5 points tonight I'll be blown away.

I have to admit, when I was reading those articles that were wondering how anyone could call Khabby the Oilers best player so far, I thought they were being a little hard considering he had played pretty well given the team in front of him.

Now though.......YEEEEESSSSHHHHH. If Dubnyk doesn't start the next two in a row there is something seriously foul in the City Of Champions®

To make things fair the Oilers should be able to send out 3 D at any given time and have them count as only 2.

i keep flipping between the game and the french channel. Though i dont speak more than 2 words in french, i feel i have a better chance at figuring out the french shows then figuring out the Oilers..

maybe thats what Tambellini has been doing all this time?

it is all falling into place! **brainwave**

I'm working on a show known as "Ice Pilots: NWT" right now. SEASON THREE BEOTCHES! I think if they get to season five we all get giant gold medallions or something.

And I've got a few vides in the pipeline, but with all this mustache growing and NWT'ing where does a guy find the time?

Oh here it is.

Jim Vandemeer played in the Western Conference for a while right? He does know that if Tomas Holmstrom is in front of the net you should probably stand a little closer than 3 feet away from him right? RIGHT???

There must be some kind of mandate from above to push the idea that Khabibulin is actually good. If this team wants to pretend that it wants to win (because we all know that losing is the real initiative) then it's time to play Dubnyk for 3 in a row at least.
