Khabibulin on IR

Nikolai Khabibulin has been placed on injured reserve by the Edmonton Oilers. The veteran goalie has suffered a groin pull and word this afternoon has the club recalling Martin Gerber from Oklahoma City.
Khabibulin has struggled of late and his statistics (15gp, 4.07 .879 this season with the Oilers) are close to league-worst. Gerber (13gp, 2.56 .911 AHL) will no doubt share duties with Devan Dubnyk (4gp, 2.99 .923 with EDM).

Dude, the hockey thing doesn’t even matter anymore. I just found out that today is the second-best day of the year, save only Gregor’s hallowed March 14th. I had no idea, but yes indeed I just found out that today is better than Christmas.
I need to get off work early. This is too good to miss.
Does anybody know if Omark can leave the AHL to the KHL? or does his contract bind him?
Ok then how about "C vs D"?
You, the larger girl with the tattoos and white t-shirt. A 1/2 bottle of Molson Canadian, and a bowl of cheesey's.
The night is yours Ender, the night is yours.....
Any thoughts on maybe sending my man-crush Pääjärvi down to the AHL in exchange for Omark? It keeps PRV playing big minutes and probably winning as well as learning the NA game and it also gives Omark what he wants in a chance on this team he believes he belongs on...
....Too soon?
True - but the Malholtra signing is the only one that we know of... Granted, this argument is a 'he said/she said', but we can't say Tambo hasn't done anything... Darren Dreger @ TSN has said Tambo is looking for a defenseman a couple of days ago... Tambo is at least trying to fill some blatant holes; unfortunately I don't believe he has any assets to do this with...
Agreed about Penner... Chances are good they won't resign Horcoff - he'll be 80 in NHL years when his contract comes up in 2015 (I think)...
I agree with you, I can't believe how many people believe that Souray's sorry ass is going to improve anything.
Isn't this the same Souray that we had last year? Didn't this team finish 30th last year? Souray is also another year older to boot.
Again, the Oilers had Souray last year and finished 30th...how does having him this year change that?
Everyone thinks Khabibulin is a guaranteed injury....you can include Souray. The guy is made of glass.
Now is when we start the DROP for HOP!
Ummmm, in order to start dropping, you need somewhere to fall to that is lower than where you presently are.
Either the DROP in question started Game Three and was a pretty short event, or we're going to need a different slogan.
I highly doubt guys that sat around into August/Sept would refuse to sign here.
He has piles of assets to deal with.
You hit the nail on the head D-Man and it's like baggedmilk says. Everyone around here thinks being a GM is a cake walk. I'll go one step further. Everyone around here thinks that being a GM for a team in one of the perceived worse markets in the league is a cake walk.
I really don't think everyone here has been privy to any and all moves that may or may not have been attempted. How do we know that others weren't offered contracts? Maybe some would only come for a gross overpayment, which would have caused a negative stir in here. Heck Hossa turned down a bizzillion dollars to come here, Guerin said he'd rather sit out than play here, even Michael freakin Nylander turned us down.
I don't think people appreciate just how much more difficult it may be to be the GM of an Edmonton, or an Altanta, or a New York Islanders. You just don't have the same advantages as GM's in other places. It seems the only thing that will work is to build with youth. Have them play and grow together and hopefully choose to stay.
Are mistakes made, yes, mistakes are made. All GM's make mistakes. You sometimes don't know what will happen until you try something.
There's a lot more that goes into making personnel moves than just saying do this or do that. There are actual real people involved that may or may not be willing to commit beyond just one year.
It seems after the cup run that management and fans believed this team was close. So moves were made and attempted with the thinking that this team is a playoff team and I call BS on any fans that say they didn't also believe this. It's only just last year that management seems to have come to the realization that players (free agents) are difficult to sign here and that the only thing to do is to build a winner from within and then they will come. So the rebuild has begun and while most seem to realize this, it's amazing how many still bitch and whine.
It seems to me that management is beginning by building a young team through the draft and by acquiring picks and young players when they can and letting them play. I don't see how this is a bad thing.
People may as well learn to be patient, or jump ship.
Agreed Vandemeer and Strudwick aren't NHL material and at best should be playing in the AHL. Those two aren't the role models you want your young stars to take after.
Asides from Penner - who would you consider a viable asset that we have, are willing to part with and that another team would want (considering skill level and contract)??
Well I'm a big Cogs and Brule fan but things just don't seem to be working here for them. I think their skills would be wanted by other teams and I think both of them would do better if they went to a contending team. So no trades to Calgary or NJ.
Depends who you are trying to aquire and what your goal is. Anyone should be available on the Oilers for the right price.
Theirs only a few guys on the team that are "untradable"
Fair enough... It was the only dam thing I could think of that rhymed with any of them.
Trade Guys: Penner, Horcoff(maybe), Cogs, Brule, Jones, Stortini, Big Mac, JFJ, Strudwick, Vandemeer, Smid, Bulin(HAHAHA ya right)
Didn't Khabby get hurt about the same time last year? Maybe he just needs a drink to calm his nerves, but in his case it will be a whole lot of drinks to get his buzz.
Any time Ender, anytime.
Seriously, its the deepest position in hockey. That's why all the fuss n' feathers from the Oilers @ JDD handed me a laugh.
Khabby hour at the Cromdale.
@Crash
The problem with armchair GMs is that they believe that NHL trades work the same as they do in EA Sports. Want Sidney Crosby? Trade Horcoff and Penner straight up. Bye bye Khabibulin? Trade him for Jonathon Quick. Sorry boys, this is the real world. In which we are reminded of every Oilers game.
Don't get me wrong, I don't think having Souray would make a huge difference. My point is that his situation was entirely mismanaged. How did it get to this point in the first place? If Tambellini can trade freaking Staios, he should certainly be able to trade Souray? Don't you think?
Tambellini has already had a 2-3 year pass because it was Lowe's mess. I am tired of all the excuses. Enough is enough. He assesses and assesses. There's nothing left to assess - we suck - "the suckiest sucks who ever sucked" so now is the time for action. Calgary already realizes they need to be in rebuild mode. It took us from 2006 until now to realize we needed to. Seriously? Enough is enough. I am all for the rebuild and I am prepared to be patient with the players we have. Tambellini is the king of the suckiest sucks.
will Jeff Desjarlais be tending the bar tonight?
@smiliegirl15
With respect, nobody picked Souray off waivers. For free. Not a lot of trade value there IMO.
@smiliegirl15
I gotta side with oilchange46 on that one. I'm not sure how he finagled Sutter into taking Staios; must have been a handjob under the table at one of the GM meetings.
Over 120 posts and NOBODY has mentioned that Khabby looked pretty comfy on the bench at the start of the third period. Not wincing, or head down or anything. He was just sitting back chillin' with a semi-grin on his face. "La dee dah. Oooo...that chick in the third row is pretty hot. Mmmmm...sweet, sweet vodka..." (or whatever goes through goalies minds when they sit on the end there).
Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't a groin injury sort of, you know, hurt?
I think I know exactly what was going through his mind...
"Ok, first I fake groin injury - then I retire due to injury - then I take insurance money and go back to Russia where I can drink vodka and drive whenever i want because Russian Police happy to take bottle of vodka instead of make me charges. Also get lots of Russian women. Stupid Oilers"
So, I was on the "Arson for Larsson" bandwagon, but I have switched to the "Cadaver for Couturier"* because we need a big C more than anything. That would complete our future top line as allstar bound. Hall, Couturier, Hemsky. What a beauty, and there's no telling how d-men will develop.

It usually doesn't hurt when I pull my groin....
The waiver wire for Souray came after the entire debacle so I don't think it's any surprise no one picked him up either time.
When you have a player being paid what Souray is being paid, I think most GMs would rather make a trade in order to take on his salary.
Tambellini is no Moses but right now we're so deep in it that we need Noah.
@ Travis Dakin
haha! what would your mother say!
I very much agree!!!
The problem and question that we all need to ask ourselves is how is tambo at assessing? Looking at what he has done yes he got rid of alot of deadweight in many of the players he got rid of. Any of us could have made those decisions they were easy. Now looking at this year knowing full well that you were going to "Rebuild" and play all of your young players what has he done? based on what he has done he believes that having mac, storts and jones are going to be all that we need for a 4th line and im not debating that but i bet we could have had a more efficient 4th line knowing that 3 and 4 would be around the same as we are giving our young players the ability to learn and make mistakes. Some solid vets would have helped that out. Tambo also must have full confidence that Vandermeer and Strudwick could handle the ice he knew they were going to have to fill. Oh and it took him 2 months to figure out that JDD wasnt going to get claimed. And our 38 year old Goalie at 3.75million for 4 years?????? You tell me how good this guy is at evaluating.
This has probably already been said but...
The F'n piss off is that they rode him into the ground AGAIN.. people around these parts have been calling for more starts from Dub.. but it would have been nice for Rekhab to come in for relief once in a while..

I was one of those calling for a goalie rebuild also.... BUT: you can't fault Renney for desperately wanting to give Hall, MPS, Eberle, etc. a taste of some regular wins.... which is something we all expected out of Khabbi, and it looked like he could deliver until the last road trip...
We totally blew the game against phoenix tonight. We had a three goal lead and slowly gave it away over the course of the game. I really thought the oil might just win this one. I guess I was wrong.
