And the winners are . . .

Jean Lefebvre

Typically, the first thing we try to do in the monthly Northwest Division Awards is determine which of the group’s Canadian entries has been the best over the past 30 or 31 days.

Well, the Flames suffered through a nine-game losing streak in January, displayed chronic scoring amnesia and ended the month by cutting the cord with the guy who was supposed to be the cornerstone of the blue-line brigade for at least as long as Darryl Sutter was running the show.

Meanwhile, the Oilers were oh-for-2010 until the calendar flipped to February, and that’s all that really needs to be said about that.

The Canucks, on the other hand, were 10-2-1 in January and probably would have gotten the nod even if the two Alberta clubs hadn’t gone into rigor mortis during the month.

Due south, the Colorado (We’re Still Here) Avalanche were 7-5-0 during the past month while the Minnesota Wild treaded water to the tune of 7-6-1.

And now, let’s hand out some hardware

MVP: In this case, the “V” stands for voluble as well as valuable. When he wasn’t busy doing the Oliver Stone conspiracy routine, waging war with national broadcasters and playing professional victim, Vancouver’s Alexandre Brurrows managed to score 15 goals in 13 games while riding shotgun with the Swedish Wonder Twins. He also had seven assists and was a plus-17.

Honourable mention: Vancouver's Henrik Sedin and Daniel Sedin, Colorado’s Craig Anderson and Minnesota’s Guillaume Latendresse.

LVP: Honestly, you could drop just any Oiler this side of Dr. Randy Gregg into this slot and you’d be in the ballpark. Let’s go with season-long whipping boy Shawn Horcoff, who had no goals and two assists in 11 games and was minus-6 for the month, which is actually only half as bad as teammate Ethan Moreau’s minus-12.

Dishonourable mention: Edmonton's Sheldon Souray, Andrew Cogliano and Jeff Drouin-Deslauriers.

Quote of the month: "You get hit so many times with a right, you're begging for a left. Quote of the month: You get hit so many times with a right, you're begging for a left." -- Oilers head coach Pat Quinn

Stat of the month: When the Oilers and Flames met on Jan. 30, it was the first time in 22 years that two teams with losing streaks of at least nine games had gone head to head.

Individual stat of the month: Alex Burrows had four shorthanded goals in January, which is more tallies of any description that Todd Bertuzzi, Chris Drury, Ryan Getzlaf Phil Kessel, James Neal, Owen Nolan, Dustin Penner, Corey Perry, Tomas Plekanec, Derek Roy, Keith Tkachuk and Henrik Zetterberg managed during the month.

Lefebvre is in that awkward stage of hockey following -- old enough to fondly remember the Cleveland Barons and too set in his ways to accept charity points and games where there's a winner but apparently no loser. As a long-time ink-stained wretch, he's also a firm believer in the old Bobby Knight quote about journalists: "All of us learn to write in second grade, but most of us go on to better things."

Once again, we watch while other teams make some big moves.

Once. Again.

Really?

Somebody really did forget to water Tambo this week.

Why no dishonorable mention for the canucks pouting in the corner about the leaguewide conspiracy to hold them back via CBC & Ron MacLean, and the fans and media whining incessantly about everything and anything?

in light of upcoming draft ('cause that's all we can look fwd to), can someone explain to the rookie me how does this work?

how do teams find players like Burrows (VAN) and Bozak (TOR) that end up playing NHL first line minutes?

and what does prevent Oilers from doing the same?

thanks.

Good Point eljay,

Good on Ron Maclean for calling out burrows, even tho I tend to believe that Ron is turning a blind eye in believing 'oh, there is no way an official would say something like that (meaning, 'You Are Wrong Burrows').. i still liked how he show burrows to be 'that-type-o-player'... nice stat line for jan tho, wow...

Ya, theirs a few guys that went undrafted to become stars. St Louis/Rafalski to name a few. Pretty slim pickings though.

Looks like someone needs a happy pill.

How would you feel about "Ass Hat & the Meatballs" (sounds like a 70's rock band) if they were Oilers?

Look like the best players in the NW to me. And they have a goalie too!

I think it's probably a bit of a stretch to call Burrows the best LW in the NW. It's not that hard to play well with the Sedins.

Well "IF, coulda, woulda, shoulda. The fact is that they are not, they are goddamn Casucks and I hate them and their fans like no other. When you have teams like we do in our division then one decent team like them come on!! The Brandon Wheatkings could probably be in second if they were in the NW Div for f%$ks sakes. The weakest division by far, a joke it is.

Is it?

Who else, Wolski?

Does he kills penalties?

It's definitely not hard to play with the Sedins, and there is certainly a halo effect, but I was talking about the line as a whole.

Why is it so hard for Oiler fans to recognize and give credit to excellence on other teams as the author of this piece has done?

@DSF

I healthy boiling pot of hatred towards canucks is all well and good, but truly, they do have the best top line in the NW. This oiler fan doesn't mind saying it. As someone rightly points out it's all for naught: they can't beat Chicago.

I suspect we'll see Chicago vs. Canucks in the West Finals, where bobby will get yet another chance to shed tears of shame.

Luongo is quite capable of stealing a series.

While my money would be on the Hawks, I wouldn't bet the house.

Who are you going to cheer for when the playoffs start? Sadly it'll probably be for Vancouver because they really are pretty good. Pat Quinn probably wishes he was back with the team he help build instead of the sorry bunch of monkey sh*t he coaches now. I watched them take apart T.O. 5-3 last Saturday. Brian Burke must of liked what he saw too because the next day he dismantled the Leafs, which is the east's representative for the sorriest bunch of monkeys to lace up skates. When the playoffs hit we will really feel like a horses ass cheering for another cities team.

You gotta cheer for the Kings. You just do.

Smyth, Stoll, Greene?

Looks like they will finish 4th and have a relatively easy matchup and I still think Kovalchuk will end up there.

Who knew?
