After completing a trade with Nashville yesterday, the Oilers have claimed winger Ryan Jones, 26, off waivers from the Preds today.

Here's what The Hockey News has to say...

ASSETS: Plays with an all-out hustle that gets him noticed by his coaching staff. Can play either wing position. Has good size and decent offensive ability.

FLAWS: Isn't great in the defensive zone. Needs to perform with greater consistency at the highest level. Must be more disciplined and not take bad penalties.

CAREER POTENTIAL: Depth winger.

CapGeek lists Jones as a $975,000 cap hit through the end of next year.

Some quick twitter reactions...

Gregor: Grabbing Jones means the Oilers have 14 forwards...so they can move two and still have 12 for tonight...two vets for picks, makes sense?

Willis: I'm a fan of the Jones pick-up. With any luck he takes Jacques' spot in the lineup next season.

Excellent day for Tambo. Shed more than $5 million in cap space and gained decent picks plus Ryan Whitney. Outstanding.

I totally agree. I can't believe all the whining on the board about the trades.

Whitney is bigger, more abrasive, can work PP and PK, is younger and cheaper than Lubo. The 6th pick provides a "sweetner" Draft Day. This was a good trade on several fronts.

Steady Steve is now gone along with his cap hit - he was a great team guy and warrior. I'll miss him, but like clearing the cap space. Johnson is unproven, very cheap, and will be a 5-6-7th D.

The waiver pick up was a great one - more size and grit, and cheap. Check out the Predator boards - they are indicating this is the next Peverly (sp).

Finally, Grebs gone too. Shedding a salary for a 4th/5th defenceman.

In the end, EDM got grittier, bigger, leaner on the salary cap, and stockpiled picks. Not too shabby.

Now the bad part - the rest of the season and tonights shelling..
