UPDATED: Oil nab F Ryan Jones off waivers

Ryan Jones #38 of the Nashville Predators reacts after scoring the eventual game-winning goal against goaltender Erik Ersberg #31 of the Los Angeles Kings late in the third period during the NHL game at Staples Center on March 16, 2009 in Los Angeles, California. The Predators defeated the Kings 4-3. (Photo by Victor Decolongon/Getty Images) *** Local Caption *** Ryan Jones

After completing a trade with Nashville yesterday, the Oilers have claimed winger Ryan Jones, 26, off waivers from the Preds today.

Here's what The Hockey News has to say...

ASSETS: Plays with an all-out hustle that gets him noticed by his coaching staff. Can play either wing position. Has good size and decent offensive ability.

FLAWS: Isn't great in the defensive zone. Needs to perform with greater consistency at the highest level. Must be more disciplined and not take bad penalties.

CAREER POTENTIAL: Depth winger.

CapGeek lists Jones as a $975,000 cap hit through the end of next year.

Some quick twitter reactions...

Gregor: Grabbing Jones means the Oilers have 14 forwards...so they can move two and still have 12 for tonight...two vets for picks, makes sense?

Willis: I'm a fan of the Jones pick-up. With any luck he takes Jacques' spot in the lineup next season.

Stay tuned for more from Gregor, Brownlee & Willis. And checkout the Jean Lefebvre's liveblog over at FlamesNation for up to the minute commentary on deadline day.

Penner AND Lubo for Boston's (Toronto's) first and Marc Savard.....would ya?

Add: For the record I wouldn't. Another one of them crazy assed long contracts and he's kinda a smurf to boot.

My guess for Boston, just for fun:

Souray to Boston, and maybe O'Sullivan (I've got a feeling he's gonna go today) or even Penner...

holy crap, could we be looking at trying to get Boston's 1st round pick back!?

@Mike Modano's Dog

I sure hope so! I'd even make it Penner to get two of the top 3 picks.

Fowler and one of Hall, Seguin (sp?) would be sweet.

If the Oilers were trading Souray would they really need to call up two d-men?

Souray is out injured so they wouldn't need the call ups if Souray was on his way out. Or at least the call ups wouldn't make sense if the Oilers were only trading Souray from the defense.

Tambellini is tied to a chair with duct tape over his mouth. His battery has been removed from his cell phone and Dave Semenko is posted close by to make sure nothing "funny" (think Batman interrogates the Joker) happens. The Oilers will do NOTHING to ruin their chances for a nice juicy 30th place and the #1 draft pick.

I bet you won't see much of any real significance until July.

The two d-men being called up (Motin & Arsene) has to mean something is up.

Just thinking out loud...the Grebeshkov deal and the clearing of his salary from the books allows the Oilers room to take on salary for this year if they have to in order to get a deal done.

Just a possibility.

Not sure why you'd want to take a run at 29th place...as it is they'll probably lose the draft lottery as it will go to some American based team so 30th place is required in order to guarantee Hall or Seguin.

Motin and Arsene probably mean either Souray of Gilbert are likely to be gone. As a bonus, either of the callups will make Joey Moss look like a decent alternative. If we thought this team looked like crap so far, we've haven't reached rock bottom yet.

I really feel bad for Pat Quinn and Tom Renney.

Jones is six feet and plays physical. He is not a waterbug like most of the Oilers, nor is he a soft 3rd liners, which they have an abudance of.

Now I'm not saying Jones is a great pick up, but when you are rebuilding you have to improve every area of your team, and the Oilers need to get grittier.

If Tambellini does nothing in the next hour, because trades always trickle in late, fans have a right to be annoyed.

I've gotta believe Tambellini is human and wants to improve the team. Any idiot can sell what we've got because we'll take just about anything in return.

You wouldn't need two call ups if it was Souray on the way out as he's already out so you wouldn't need call ups for a trade involving Souray...but as reported here already it was just announced that Souray is out for the season now.....

This has been an unbelievable year...wow! If this doesn't test the quality of fans, I don't know what will...Maybe not trading Souray will be better for us...he's a great leader...maybe this will work out for us in the long run...

It's hard to continually hear bad news when talking about the Oilers...I mean, if we didn't have bad luck, we would have no luck at all! It's crazy!
