UPDATED: Oil nab F Ryan Jones off waivers

Ryan Jones #38 of the Nashville Predators reacts after scoring the eventual game-winning goal against goaltender Erik Ersberg #31 of the Los Angeles Kings late in the third period during the NHL game at Staples Center on March 16, 2009 in Los Angeles, California. The Predators defeated the Kings 4-3. (Photo by Victor Decolongon/Getty Images) *** Local Caption *** Ryan Jones

After completing a trade with Nashville yesterday, the Oilers have claimed winger Ryan Jones, 26, off waivers from the Preds today.

Here's what The Hockey News has to say...

ASSETS: Plays with an all-out hustle that gets him noticed by his coaching staff. Can play either wing position. Has good size and decent offensive ability.

FLAWS: Isn't great in the defensive zone. Needs to perform with greater consistency at the highest level. Must be more disciplined and not take bad penalties.

CAREER POTENTIAL: Depth winger.

CapGeek lists Jones as a $975,000 cap hit through the end of next year.

Some quick twitter reactions...

Gregor: Grabbing Jones means the Oilers have 14 forwards...so they can move two and still have 12 for tonight...two vets for picks, makes sense?

Willis: I'm a fan of the Jones pick-up. With any luck he takes Jacques' spot in the lineup next season.

Stay tuned for more from Gregor, Brownlee & Willis. And checkout the Jean Lefebvre's liveblog over at FlamesNation for up to the minute commentary on deadline day.

Staios will fit well in Calgary. Hard nosed and fairly solid defenceman. However me is know to take the odd dumb penalty.

To get a player who is a UFA and will essentially clear the cap space AND get a draft pick? I have no idea what Sutter was thinking.

I wouldnt have thought he could be delt without some other asset. I definetly didnt think it could be done while only taking $550k back in salary.

Great day for the Oil! Whitney is a similar player to Vish, and looked great at the Olympics. He's younger, bigger, more physical, and 1.6 mil cheaper! Getting anything more than a 4th rounder for Staios is a miracle. I love the way he played, but it saves us $2.7 mil next year. We'll take care of Nilson, O'Sullivan and Souray in the off season.

Nice to see Tambo step up!

Ya, I'm impressed with that trade. So essentially we'll have turned over 50% (at least) of our defense by the start of next year. I guess I can see a little silver ligning to this ....now they have their work cut out for them picking up the missing 50%.

Hello cap space, now what to do with you.

Like both trades. Staios one is way more then I expected and if Johnson is re-signed that means it was a real good trde. Lubo, hate to lose him but isn't a long-term fit. Whitney is an all around defenders that is needed.

PROS: 1) Dump Salary 2) Dump Staios 3) Pick-up Ryan Jones 4) Add 2nd, 3rd, 6th round picks

CONS: 1) Return for Visnovsky is absolute sh*t. 2) Moreau still on the club 3) Gilbert still on the club

Not a terrible deadline, but the Vis trade makes me sick to my stomach...

Sutter is crappier than Lowbellini. Who would have guessed that possible?

Now with that cap space, I am guessing they will bring Buchberger and Lummer out of retirement and pay them both $3.5 million....but Ogden will hold my hand and show me it's only 2.

If someone gives up a 3rd and an NHL defenceman (although he is a UFA) for a 2.7 M cap hit on an old, slow, injury prone guy Moreau could be moved. Maybe that 3rd could be lumped in with Moreau to ship him to TO (word was they wanted a 2nd).

Disagree with your con number one...

33 yr old visnovsky for a much younger, bigger, cheaper, olympian d-man...don't think players get better for the most part after age 35 which is what visnovsky will be by the time the oilers are a good team.

As far as moreau goes...it will happen...it didn't have to happen now and get used to gilbert

We couldn't disagree more about Whitney, unless he somehow finds his game and develops a mean streak.

Until then, we're stuck with another Gilbert for three more years. Great.

No way Souray moves in the off-season now. He's the only thing left on our blueline that doesn't make me cringe. (Whitney may turn out to be a player, but the sting of losing Vis will make me hate him for a while at least.)

@ GSC

I agree that this is the one deal Tambo did today that he probably should have passed on. Time will tell if he's a misunderstood genius or an utter moron, but I know where I'd put my money today if I were a betting man.

Guys you're missing the best part! Souray is still here. We still have big sexy. he's going to be so great for the stretch run.... his hand is what?

But I am sure that will be the last of his injury woes, he's never been hurt before right?....

Gawd I hope we trade him to NYR at the draft for Dubinsky and Rosival (the latter we then buyout)

BTW. Full props to Robin for calling out Oilers "Director of Team-Fan Relations" Bob Stauffer on the Whitney trade. 10 seconds after it was announced Stauffer was reading out the full stat sheet on him, after just claiming he didn't know what else might be coming down the pipe. Brownlee said something like "That's alot of stats there Bob". Bob (stumbling) "Well...errr... the deal has been one we've been talking about on Oilers Lunch...errr...". Classic stuff.

I don't mind the trades to be honest. I think the Lubo trade is OK. Woulda hoped for a little more return though. How old would he have been when the Oilers improve enough to make some noise in the playoffs? In all likelyhood that's 3-4 years from now. Trades today were all rebuild trades.

All of Tambos moves today have been made to start a rebuild. I don't care how much you like Lubo if we are mailing it in for the next two seasons why carry Lubo's contract???

I guess there is no question now whether or not we are rebuilding. So pick one side of the fence to sit on............ you can't have both

BTW maybe Lubo requested a trade

The only thing that bothers me about the Lubo trade is that I would have much, much preferred moving Souray (for anything) and keeping Lubo. So, thanks again for breaking your hand in a meaningless fight, Sheldon.
