UPDATED: Oil nab F Ryan Jones off waivers

Ryan Jones #38 of the Nashville Predators reacts after scoring the eventual game-winning goal against goaltender Erik Ersberg #31 of the Los Angeles Kings late in the third period during the NHL game at Staples Center on March 16, 2009 in Los Angeles, California. After completing a trade with Nashville yesterday, the Oilers have claimed winger Ryan Jones, 26, off waivers from the Preds today.

Here's what The Hockey News has to say...

ASSETS: Plays with an all-out hustle that gets him noticed by his coaching staff. Can play either wing position. Has good size and decent offensive ability.

FLAWS: Isn't great in the defensive zone. Needs to perform with greater consistency at the highest level. Must be more disciplined and not take bad penalties.

CAREER POTENTIAL: Depth winger.

CapGeek lists Jones as a $975,000 cap hit through the end of next year.

Some quick twitter reactions...

Gregor: Grabbing Jones means the Oilers have 14 forwards...so they can move two and still have 12 for tonight...two vets for picks, makes sense?

Willis: I'm a fan of the Jones pick-up. With any luck he takes Jacques' spot in the lineup next season.

Stay tuned for more from Gregor, Brownlee & Willis. And checkout the Jean Lefebvre's liveblog over at FlamesNation for up to the minute commentary on deadline day.

*Alarm goes off* Tambellini wakes up.

Tambellini: Damn it! What time is it?

Lowe: 12:59pm

Tambellini: Dude I told you I was just taking a little nap, why didn't you wake me up?!

Lowe: You're the GM!

Tambellini: Dude, WTF? Okay okay okay, we can still salvage this, lets pull the trigger on that Souray deal with New York.

Lowe: Yeah um... about that.

Supposedly his modus operandi is similar to Ryan Smyth; stand in front of the net and look for the ugly goal.

Overall, this makes the 'trade' look a bit better; Preds take Grebs, Oil get Jones and a second.

Vis for Whitney. I just don't get it. Trading an Olympian for a big kid.

I just don't know what to think anymore. The only thing I can figure is that Tambo got spooked with no calls and at the last minute when the phone rang, he just panicked and picked it up and started screaming 'YES!!!' into it over and over, 'PLEASE, GOD, WHATEVER YOU WANT JUST TAKE IT!!!'

This has to end his tenure here. I just can't see how he can look Katz in the eyes and say this was the only deal out there that was good for the club.

In three years when the Oil are starting to contend again, we'll all be glad to have Whitney at only 30 years old. It also saves us 1.6 mil per year. Tambo will be far busier at the draft.

Because Nashville would have wanted to give up a lower draft pick. I got confirmation from Oilers that this was not part of the Grebeshkov deal...

According to Tencer:

"Stauffer just said on CHED that 2 d-men are likely to be called up from Springfield...Motin and Arsene are rumoured... "

Maybe this means Gilbert is out?

I was told it wasn't part of the deal to claim him on waivers. Also supposedly when a prospect was mentioned the Preds wanted to lower pick. Not sure if Jones' name was specifically mentioned. Was a text convo, since guys are in "trade" room today.

Jones has seven goals, which would make him the most productive bottom six forward on this team right now how scary is that)...so I could see Nashville trying to lower the pick...

Great. another small forward added to the team. this is the only move we are going to make? We dump Goatiebreshcoughup, and we add Ryan Jones...WTF?????.....to quote Clark Griswold at a moment like this."Take a look around you Ellen. How could thing possibly get any worse? We are at the threshold of hell here!!" You suck Tambalini................

Jones is six feet and plays physical. He is not a waterbug like most of the Oilers, nor is he a soft 3rd liners, which they have an abudance of.

Now I'm not saying Jones is a great pick up, but when you are rebuilding you have to improve every area of your team, and the Oilers need to get grittier.

If Tambellini does nothing in the next hour, because trades always trickle in late, fans have a right to be annoyed.

hey guys, Wake up!

All of Tambos moves today have been made to start a rebuild. I don't care how much you like Lubo if we are mailing it in for the next two seasons why carry Lubo's contract???

I guess there is no question now whether or not we are rebuilding. So pick one side of the fence to sit on............ you can't have both

BTW maybe Lubo requested a trade

Ah... he's a capable 7th defenseman a la Strudwick, I guess. No higher than 6.

I like the swap of players from a Flames perspective. Giving up the 3rd rounder, especially given the fact Staios has another year left @ 2.7, really hurts. Not moving Sarich's 3.6 coupled with adding Staios' 2.7... EPIC FAIL

I'm sorry are you suggesting that Studwick is a "capable" 7th defenceman?

EPIC FAIL.

Have some good friends at Miami (Ohio) that saw Jonesy play...pretty much summed up what THN had to say about him, good size and physicality and could be a Glencross type. Yes, they "saw him good" but that's enough for me.

The Oilers need another Curtis Glencross. Hell, they need three of them.

I keep on hearing the Oilers are close to a deal with the Rangers for Dubinsky, and another Roster player to take on Salary for Gilbert? Any truth to this Robin?

I have also heard Staios to Vancouver for a late round draft choice?

And Moreau to LA for a Prospect D-Man and Pisani to San Jose for a 3rd or 4th round pick.
