UPDATED: Oil nab F Ryan Jones off waivers

Ryan Jones #38 of the Nashville Predators reacts after scoring the eventual game-winning goal against goaltender Erik Ersberg #31 of the Los Angeles Kings late in the third period during the NHL game at Staples Center on March 16, 2009 in Los Angeles, California. After completing a trade with Nashville yesterday, the Oilers have claimed winger Ryan Jones, 26, off waivers from the Preds today.

Here's what The Hockey News has to say...

ASSETS: Plays with an all-out hustle that gets him noticed by his coaching staff. Can play either wing position. Has good size and decent offensive ability.

FLAWS: Isn't great in the defensive zone. Needs to perform with greater consistency at the highest level. Must be more disciplined and not take bad penalties.

CAREER POTENTIAL: Depth winger.

CapGeek lists Jones as a $975,000 cap hit through the end of next year.

Some quick twitter reactions...

Gregor: Grabbing Jones means the Oilers have 14 forwards...so they can move two and still have 12 for tonight...two vets for picks, makes sense?

Willis: I'm a fan of the Jones pick-up. With any luck he takes Jacques' spot in the lineup next season.

Stay tuned for more from Gregor, Brownlee & Willis. And checkout the Jean Lefebvre's liveblog over at FlamesNation for up to the minute commentary on deadline day.

I keep on hearing the Oilers are close to a deal with the Rangers for Dubinsky, and another Roster player to take on Salary for Gilbert? Any truth to this Robin?

I have also heard Staios to Vancouver for a late round draft choice?

And Moreau to LA for a Prospect D-Man and Pisani to San Jose for a 3rd or 4th round pick.

Who are you hearing all this from?

I have some close friends that work in the Hockey world, and in Media. I get texts and e-mails all the time. It's become a hobby. I worked briefly in the media, before I left for a job that makes more money.

If Tambo doesn't do anything more today he should be fired, how the F does he not have deals lined up, what has he been doing all year?

Watching Carolina dump their crap, you'd think Tambo would have been in line as well

Here's hoping

@Reagan

Speculation on TSN is that LA getting Halpern from TB is going to kill the Moreau to LA buzz.

A few character/grit guys are moving, WSH picking up Walker & Belanger.

The last few years most of our deals came in after the deadline, same thing this year maybe?

Good Point. It makes me wonder if Edmontons asking price was too much. They might not be done yet.

Huh. Thanks. An actual prospect, I could understand the Preds wanting to do a lower pick. Don't know that Jones fits the description.

My bet? The Oilers didn't ask to include him.

If we are calling up two dmen, I would assume that either someone got hurt lastnight, or that they are looking at trading 2 dmen.

And can Jones make it to play in tonights game?

I can't believe how quiet it is - it's too quiet in Edmonton.

We really could use getting rid of those contracts for the Oilers, and freeing up spots for youngsters for future spots.

I am still hopeful that we can move some of those spots by the roster deadline. I don't care what we get for them really, we just need to move them. Likely it will take place a few minutes after the deadline, as per usual - if not, I will be pissed!

It's always quiet in Edmonton on trade deadline day. Our trades always come out after the 1pm deadline. So I am not to worried.

Penner AND Lubo for Boston's (Toronto's) first and Marc Savard.....would ya?

Add: For the record I wouldn't. Another one of them crazy assed long contracts and he's kinda a smurf to boot.

My guess for Boston, just for fun:

Souray to Boston, and maybe O'Sullivan (I've got a feeling he's gonna go today) or even Penner...

holy crap, could we be looking at trying to get Boston's 1st round pick back!?

I sure hope so! I'd even make it Penner to get two of the top 3 picks.

Fowler and one of Hall, Seguin (sp?) would be sweet.

If the Oilers were trading Souray would they really need to call up two d-men?

Souray is out injured so they wouldn't need the call ups if Souray was on his way out. Or at least the call ups wouldn't make sense if the Oilers were only trading Souray from the defense.

Tambellini is tied to a chair with duct tape over his mouth. His battery has been removed from his cell phone and Dave Semenko is posted close by to make sure nothing "funny" (think Batman interrogates the Joker) happens. The Oilers will do NOTHING to ruin their chances for a nice juicy 30th place and the #1 draft pick.

I bet you won't see much of any real significance until July.

The two d-men being called up (Motin & Arsene) has to mean something is up.

Just thinking out loud...the Grebeshkov deal and the clearing of his salary from the books allows the Oilers room to take on salary for this year if they have to in order to get a deal done.

Just a possibility.

Not sure why you'd want to take a run at 29th place...as it is they'll probably lose the draft lottery as it will go to some American based team so 30th place is required in order to guarantee Hall or Seguin.
