UPDATED: Oil nab F Ryan Jones off waivers

Ryan Jones #38 of the Nashville Predators reacts after scoring the eventual game-winning goal against goaltender Erik Ersberg #31 of the Los Angeles Kings late in the third period during the NHL game at Staples Center on March 16, 2009 in Los Angeles, California. After completing a trade with Nashville yesterday, the Oilers have claimed winger Ryan Jones, 26, off waivers from the Preds today.

Here's what The Hockey News has to say...

ASSETS: Plays with an all-out hustle that gets him noticed by his coaching staff. Can play either wing position. Has good size and decent offensive ability.

FLAWS: Isn't great in the defensive zone. Needs to perform with greater consistency at the highest level. Must be more disciplined and not take bad penalties.

CAREER POTENTIAL: Depth winger.

CapGeek lists Jones as a $975,000 cap hit through the end of next year.

Some quick twitter reactions...

Gregor: Grabbing Jones means the Oilers have 14 forwards...so they can move two and still have 12 for tonight...two vets for picks, makes sense?

Willis: I'm a fan of the Jones pick-up. With any luck he takes Jacques' spot in the lineup next season.

Stay tuned for more from Gregor, Brownlee & Willis. And checkout the Jean Lefebvre's liveblog over at FlamesNation for up to the minute commentary on deadline day.

Tambellini is tied to a chair with duct tape over his mouth. The Oilers will do NOTHING to ruin their chances for a nice juicy 30th place and the #1 draft pick.

I bet you won't see much of any real significance until July.

I dont understand how selling will jepordize the Oils chances of finishing DFL?

Motin and Arsene probably mean either Souray of Gilbert are likely to be gone. As a bonus, either of the callups will make Joey Moss look like a decent alternative. If we thought this team looked like crap so far, we've haven't reached rock bottom yet.

I really feel bad for Pat Quinn and Tom Renney.

I've gotta believe Tambellini is human and wants to improve the team. Any idiot can sell what we've got because we'll take just about anything in return.

Souray has a hand infection and is done for the season according to Sportsnet. No way he's traded until the summer now.

You wouldn't need two call ups if it was Souray on the way out as he's already out so you wouldn't need call ups for a trade involving Souray...but as reported here already it was just announced that Souray is out for the season now.....

Maybe Oilers wanted Jurcina?

This isn't looking good to getting rid of the Veterns.

Hopefully Souray is OK.

Also a Deal between the Rangers and Oilers may fall in the next 20 to 25 mins. Not sure on what is being offered. Deal may fall through. Iam told Gilbert is part of the deal.

This has been an unbelievable year...wow! If this doesn't test the quality of fans, I don't know what will...Maybe not trading Souray will be better for us...he's a great leader...maybe this will work out for us in the long run...

It's hard to continually hear bad news when talking about the Oilers...I mean, if we didn't have bad luck, we would have no luck at all! It's crazy!

How does Souray get a season ending hand injury on trade deadline day and end up in the hospital?

WHAT DID WE DO TO DERSERVE THIS?

If there is nothing waiting for finalization and it's all over, does Katz grow some balls and fire Tambellini?

Here's the thing; no matter what happens next season, we'll be happier than we are right now because things will be better. I mean, they'd have to be. Barring the plane going down over the Rockies, things have to be better.

Jones is six feet and plays physical. He is not a waterbug like most of the Oilers, nor is he a soft 3rd liners, which they have an abudance of.

Now I'm not saying Jones is a great pick up, but when you are rebuilding you have to improve every area of your team, and the Oilers need to get grittier.

If Tambellini does nothing in the next hour, because trades always trickle in late, fans have a right to be annoyed.

Does this mean more "crust"?

If the Oilersnation can send Gregor to the draft, we must be able to raise money to buy Tambellini a mobile package with unlimitted minutes and long-distance within North America. This pay-as-you-go plan and running out of minutes on deadline day was unacceptable.
