UPDATED: Oil nab F Ryan Jones off waivers

Ryan Jones #38 of the Nashville Predators reacts after scoring the eventual game-winning goal against goaltender Erik Ersberg #31 of the Los Angeles Kings late in the third period during the NHL game at Staples Center on March 16, 2009 in Los Angeles, California. After completing a trade with Nashville yesterday, the Oilers have claimed winger Ryan Jones, 26, off waivers from the Preds today.

Here's what The Hockey News has to say...

ASSETS: Plays with an all-out hustle that gets him noticed by his coaching staff. Can play either wing position. Has good size and decent offensive ability.

FLAWS: Isn't great in the defensive zone. Needs to perform with greater consistency at the highest level. Must be more disciplined and not take bad penalties.

CAREER POTENTIAL: Depth winger.

CapGeek lists Jones as a $975,000 cap hit through the end of next year.

Some quick twitter reactions...

Gregor: Grabbing Jones means the Oilers have 14 forwards...so they can move two and still have 12 for tonight...two vets for picks, makes sense?

Willis: I'm a fan of the Jones pick-up. With any luck he takes Jacques' spot in the lineup next season.

Stay tuned for more from Gregor, Brownlee & Willis. And checkout the Jean Lefebvre's liveblog over at FlamesNation for up to the minute commentary on deadline day.

Supposedly his modus operandi is similar to Ryan Smyth; stand in front of the net and look for the ugly goal.

Overall, this makes the 'trade' look a bit better; Preds take Grebs, Oil get Jones and a second.

@Ender

and since Jones was picked on waivers, we pick him up for half of his salary?

Preds fans seem high on the guy, should be a nice upgrade over stone on the 3rd line, seems to score at a decent clip too.

I wonder why they just didn't include him in the trade?

Great trade for Maloney and Phoenix getting Wolski. He will give them some good offensive depth. The Dogs will be interesting to watch.

~Had to be waivers; they couldn't include him in the trade; every player has Edmonton listed in their no-trade clause. Didn't you know?~

Because Nashville would have wanted to give up a lower draft pick. I got confirmation from Oilers that this was not part of the Grebeshkov deal...

So, is it kinda sad that Ryan Jones will be in the top 10 in scoring on the Oilers but the Preds are giving him away for free?

According to Tencer:

"Stauffer just said on CHED that 2 d-men are likely to be called up from Springfield...Motin and Arsene are rumoured... "

Maybe this means Gilbert is out?

Haha that wouldn't surprise me either, although Tencer did tweet this last night:

"Final tweet for tonight unless something breaks: watch AHL transactions tomorrow for hints. If Oilers make callups, something is going down."

Have some good friends at Miami (Ohio) that saw Jonesy play...pretty much summed up what THN had to say about him, good size and physicality and could be a Glencross type. Yes, they "saw him good" but that's enough for me.

The Oilers need another Curtis Glencross. Hell, they need three of them.

Do you know if they asked for Jones to be included in the deal? The waiver fee is only $70K. If the Oilers had stood on a second and Jones, would NSH have really balked?

I keep on hearing the Oilers are close to a deal with the Rangers for Dubinsky, and another Roster player to take on Salary for Gilbert? Any truth to this Robin?

I have also heard Staios to Vancouver for a late round draft choice?

And Moreau to LA for a Prospect D-Man and Pisani to San Jose for a 3rd or 4th round pick.

If Tambo doesn't do anything more today he should be fired, how the F does he not have deals lined up, what has he been doing all year?

Watching Carolina dump their crap, you'd think Tambo would have been in line as well

Here's hoping

@Reagan

Speculation on TSN is that LA getting Halpern from TB is going to kill the Moreau to LA buzz.

A few character/grit guys are moving, WSH picking up Walker & Belanger.

The last few years most of our deals came in after the deadline, same thing this year maybe?

I was told it wasn't part of the deal to claim him on waivers. Also supposedly when a prospect was mentioned the Preds wanted to lower pick. Not sure if Jones' name was specifically mentioned. Was a text convo, since guys are in "trade" room today.

Jones has seven goals, which would make him the most productive bottom six forward on this team right now how scary is that)...so I could see Nashville trying to lower the pick...

Huh. Thanks. An actual prospect, I could understand the Preds wanting to do a lower pick. Don't know that Jones fits the description.

My bet? The Oilers didn't ask to include him.

If we are calling up two dmen, I would assume that either someone got hurt lastnight, or that they are looking at trading 2 dmen.

And can Jones make it to play in tonights game?

I can't believe how quiet it is - it's too quiet in Edmonton.

We really could use getting rid of those contracts for the Oilers, and freeing up spots for youngsters for future spots.

I am still hopeful that we can move some of those spots by the roster deadline. I don't care what we get for them really, we just need to move them. Likely it will take place a few minutes after the deadline, as per usual - if not, I will be pissed!
