***UPDATE NEW OILERS ASST. GM??? And Oil Kings coach

Jason Gregor
June 15 2010 03:05PM

It sounds like the Oil Kings have found a new coach. Sources have told me that Bob Green is close to finalizing a deal with former NHLer, Derek Laxdal.

Laxdal played 67 games in the show between the Leafs and Islanders, after a solid WHL career with the Brandon Wheat Kings that included a 61-goal campaign in 1985.

After retiring, Laxdal became an assistant coach with Odessa in the CHL for two seasons, before getting the head coaching gig in Wichita for three seasons. He has spent the last five seasons as the bench boss of the Idaho Steelheads in the ECHL.

In five years the Steelheads were a dominating 217-108-35 under Laxdal, and won the Championship in 2007.

Laxdal is a very competitive coach, and brings a lot of fire and passion I’m told.

He interviewed in Peoria for the vacant AHL job and I’d heard the Manitoba Moose was kicking some tires as well. Laxdal was sought after by a few teams and looks to be a solid hire for the Oil Kings.

ONLY OILERS COACHES LEFT

After deciding to let Rob Daum go, Steve Tambellini will now focus on the Oilers coaching staff and finding Daum’s replacement. I don’t see Kelly Buchberger going back to the AHL at this point.

The issue with Wayne Fleming and Kelly Buchberger is if the organization decides to go in a different direction it will be hard for either Bucky or Fleming to get another job. It won’t be impossible, but the options will be limited.

My biggest beef with the Daum decision is that Daum will have a hard time finding another job. Minor league coaches don't have the luxury of having millions/thousands stashed away so they can sit around for a year without working. Daum, like most of us, needs to work to pay the bills and now it’s June 15th and he doesn’t have a job.

I don’t have a massive problem with Tambellini deciding to go with another coach. That’s his prerogative, but I don’t get why he waited so long to let Daum know. Had he told Daum even a few weeks ago that he wouldn’t be back, Daum could have applied for the Oil Kings gig and some of the vacant AHL openings. That won’t happen now.

If the same happens to Fleming and Buchberger it won’t look good on the Oilers.

***UPDATE****

It sounds like the Oilers are close to filling the void left by Kevin Prendergast's departure and Scott Bonner is the leading candidate. Bonner, the current GM of the Vancouver Giants should be named the new Assistant GM of the Oilers, and will likely be in charge of the OKC franchise.

Bonner is highly regarded in the hockey world, and should bring a new energy and insight to the organization. Originally the Oilers wanted the OKC GM to live and work out of Oklahoma City, but some candidates were lukewarm to that idea and the Oilers might be willing to allow the GM to commute to OKC.

The Summer of Steve is getting busier by the day, and Bonner should be a solid addition to the organization. The Oilers are in dire need of some new blood and new philosophies and Bonner will bring that.

They gotta do something for Daum. I can't see Tambo being that big of a a$$hole to hang him out to dry like that. Maybe he was too busy, or maybe he's not fully in-charge. Hope the Oilers bring him back in some capacity.

Why would it surprise you that CBJ did something similar? Where did the CBJ GM work prior to CBJ? LOL

Funny how some personnel who deserve to get their butts canned, traded, or bought out will manage to hang on with this organization....while stand up guys who have done nothing but their best get treated like afterthoughts.

The optics aren't that great.

WOW, I actually called who the assistant GM was going to be? ~I should start up a rumour site & charge everyone a subscription fee.~

Now that Tambellini is putting "his" guys into these positions we can really start to give it to Tambellini if things don't succeed.

Bonner has the pedigree to do it, hopefully he is as good with men as he was with kids in the talent evaluating department.

What? People think this was "senseless carnage"? Daum is by all accounts a good guy, but his team finished in last by an ungodly margin. They were worse than the Oildrop for pete's sake.

I'm not saying it was completely his fault, but it's not an indefensible position to say he needs to go.

Why do they have to 'do something' about Daum. Daum has loads of options available to him to fill in until he gets another job.

Daum is a big boy and I don't understand all of the sympathy and crying around here.

So if a Tambo team finishes in last spot means the coach automatically gets fired. Where does that leave Quinn??? Personally I would like to see him shuffled out, replaced by Renney. I am curious as to what others think.

If Tambellini and company decide to adopt some semblance of the Chicago Blackhawks' winning model, the Oil will be going young in 2010-2011. Surely, this can't be any worse than what has happened the last four seasons of missing the playoffs. I think the fans would be excited to see all the young talent rather than the listless play of the many Oiler underperformers. Is Quinn the right coach under these circumstances? I don't think so. Renney, yes.

And what reasoning do you have for that, if any?

It's obvious with this talk of a new assistant GM they were keeping Daum around as a backup plan. If they didnt get Bonner, who likely has his own guy in mind for the job or at least would have been consulted on Daum, then they stick with Daum as the coach. The world of coaching in pro sports is a tough gig but letting go of a coach in June is hardly unprecedented.

Coaches lose their jobs all the time, just think how hard it must have been for Denis Savard when he was canned 2 games into the season when they gave the job to Quennville in Chicago.

Listen, I feel bad that Daum got let go, but are you absolutely sure that he's been left "high and dry?" How the hell would any of us know that? Maybe Daum knew this was coming for weeks.

So what of the Oilers current Assistant GM, Ed Olczyk? Does he drop the title from his position?

@Ribs

Like coaches and players there is often more then one assistant GM. I'm curious if instead of assistant they just start being called what they are I.E. Capoligist, GM of the AHl etc..

Ha, whoops. Maybe Ed can be an Assistant GM too. The more the merrier, it seems. Interesting stuff.

If Daum was a good as people say he was, how come no one phoned the Oilers to ask for permission to talk to him for a head coaching job.
