EL SEGUNDO, CA - JUNE 24: Taylor Hall (L) and Tyler Seguin (R) share a laugh while on the bench with youth hockey players during the NHL prospects clinic at the Toyota Sports Center on June 24, 2010 in El Segundo,California. (Photo by Jeff Gross/Getty Images)

For two months Oiler fans have argued in favour of Taylor or Tyler, and in less than two hours we will finally know who the Oilers will pick first overall. The Oilers know who they are taking, but they’ve done a pretty good job of keeping it quiet.

The sense in LA is that the Oilers will take Hall, but few are willing to stake their reputation on it at this point. I saw Bruins GM, Peter Chiarelli having lunch in the lobby of the JW Marriot at 1 p.m. PST, and he wasn’t sharing a table with Steve Tambellini.

The rumblings about the Oilers and Bruins making some sort of deal that sees Seguin an Oiler and Hall a Bruin continues to float around, but the cost of that deal varies from Blake Wheeler to draft picks to the Oilers needing to swing another deal first to sweeten the pot.

While I would love to see some massive deals transpire that would send Oiler fans into a state of disbelief: Mouths open as Tambellini left the podium walking behind Hall and Seguin, while the cameras panned to bent-over-vomiting-into-a-bucket Brian Burke while simultaneously Wanye, Ender, David S, Jessica, Rubbertrout, Dakin, Archaeologuy, Hemmertime, Cable Guy, Menacer, Quicksilver Ballet, Esa Tikkanen, Homie, Rindog, I;m a Scientist, Baggedmilk, Jeanshorts, Milli, DeepOil, Madjam and the rest of the Nation sit in silence marveling at the brilliance of Tambellini, I just don’t see it happening.

I will update the Nation with quotes and snippets once the draft gets going and let’s hope there are some trades. Until then Nation, enjoy the buildup and dream about the Oilers actually making the playoffs again.

The good news for Oilerville is that the last team to win the Cup without a top-five pick on their team was the 1994 New York Rangers. Whoever the Oilers pick later today he should give you hope that the Oilers will eventually become a legitimate contender again.

Dare to dream Oiler fans, but the reality is that today is a major step, regardless of who they choose, towards the road to respectability.

Disappointment!

Yay! the oilers have 1 legitimate line 1 or line 2 centre(gagner) and too many wingers ..... awesome pick.

And no I don't by the BS that Hall can convert to centre.

Horcoff might have an issue with that.

I know. Funny right. At first I thought the jersey was number one (for being first overall), then I realized it was number ten. I guess I forgot all about Horcoff and the fact that this is 2010. Then I thought maybe Hall will wear ten and the Oilers would trade Horcoff for the fifteenth overall pick. Then I remembered that I drank eleven beers and maybe I'm not really thinking at all.

Cheers.

The Oilers had lot's of opportunity to make moves,as usual Tambellini sits and waits till it's to late,as a Oilers fan with all the talk going in and them doing nothing,it is quite disapointing. The only saving grace was that they picked Hall.

Tamb made the 1st pick and left the building....... Some people just dont get it. Who ever thinks tamb wasnt trying to make deals is in a coma. This isnt PS3 or Xbox folks this is real life, trades are hard to make when you dont have crap to offer in return.

Edmonton fans, stop being idiots. You complain about everything. We get a 1st overall pick and a great talent in Taylor Hall and you're still whining and complaining... Gee I wonder why nobody wants to come to the city of Edmonton.

He plays the game harder than anybody in the draft and is extremely tenacious and puts out 100% every shift. Nobody on the Oilers squad came make the same claim, which is the team's biggest problem, no compete level.

how do you know this? Were you at the table? Did you here tamb say ill just wait a little longer and see what happens?

Give your head a shake. Its not that easy.

I woulda loved to see him make a move or two to move up, but if you have to sell the farm to get a late 1st round pick that may or may not ever play in the nhl then i dont think you do it.

Yes I watched the draft, the Oilers could have easly done something, they should have went after Fowler and Tinordi would have been another good choice,They where offering Cogliano for a 10-15th pick ,cmon Tambellini needed to do more and should have.

Easily? All the in-touch media guys at the draft tweeted all night long that Tambo was aggressively trying to make deals. And it's not like other teams got a lot done. How easy can it be? I hate having to defend Tambo but fer facks sake.

What if the only way they could have got the 15th pick is if it was Hemsky, Eberle and Svenson? You make that deal just to get more prospects? Unless you know what was offered up then you cant say they werent trying and made offers

No more prospects. They are now going after you. Kevin Lowe was visiting the site and he realized the brain you are working with. Right away he told Steve and Co. to put a offer to try to get you to join the organization. Your thought procces is what this team has been missing. Forget Hall and propsects, stay home by the phone they will be calling soon. Write down all the trades you made in NHL10 or NHL2K10 and get ready you might have the opportunity to make it happen for real, for real. You the man cool guy, make us proud.

I was in the Team Tyler camp for a while there, but there's absolutely nothing wrong with picking Taylor. He's a great pick and we'll do fine with him. The Oilers should be applauded for picking him. Plus, Tambo got props from Chiarelli for his attempts to land the second pick, so that tells me there was sufficient effort there.

Overall, a pretty damn good night. Can't we all agree on that?

Exactly, so what trade would you be willing to make? Something the other team wouldnt think about taking. Easy to give up your crap for something good isnt it?

I have no idea what was offered, but if cogs couldnt get the 15th, then im glad tamb didnt throw more out there. cogs + what for the 15th? You tell me what tambo could have offered up to get that pick that would have made you say "tambo did something at this draft to get prospects"? And also that the other side would agree to taking.

All in all a good night. We drafted a potential hall of famer. Tambo did not make a magor blunder and tommorrow we get to pick first again. There is a good defence man, Two left wingers and a goalie on the board. I say the oil take Picard.

This is a joke right?

Hall or Seguin I don't think I could be unhappy with either! All reports point to Tambi trying to swing something, but you have to keep perspective...

This is a deep draft, but not a lot guaranteed of high-end talent. Lots of small forward and solid NHLers but everybody out the top 2 is a crap shoot, how much do want to give up for a chance at solid 15-20 goal scorer when you have roughly the same chance at 31?

PS Brock Nelson, time to take a chance on a big centre with a seeming offensive upside, 93 points in 31 games, sure it was high school.. But dude is 6'3" and already over 200 pounds.
