STAR PICKING TIME

Wanye
September 20 2010 02:26PM

It is one of our favourite days here at the OilersNation. The day where we all go out on a limb and declare our Star for the upcoming season.

For the uninitiated, we started picking our favourite player and our designated whipping Goat back in 2005. We did so as a means of being able to later gloat "man, did we ever pick the best Star this year" and also be able to gleefully flay our Goat night after night, game after game without mercy or concern of "being a bad fan" during the season.

Picking your star and making him "your guy" for the year can be richly rewarding. We always think back to our buddy Lee who picked Pisani to have a breakout year back in 2006. As he tore the playoffs a new corn chute, Lee was held in equally high regard as Saint Fernando himself. With each passing goal, we would shake our heads in wonder.

Not at Pisani having an out of body experience for two months - but at our buddy who had the foresight to call it. That's the kind of glory Star pickers can get if it is done right.

HISTORY

Generally our Star will fold under the immense pressure of living with our fanboy endorsement and we will spend the season shaking our heads at what we were thinking back in early September. It's virtually a kiss of death.

2005-06: Chris Pronger (had great season, broke our collective hearts after)

2006-07: Ryan Smyth (traded at during the season, broke our collective hearts)

2007-08: Shawn Horcoff (lit the lamp like crazy, got hurt)

2008-09: Erik Cole (played like crap, demanded to go back to Carolina)

2009-10: Mike Comrie (led the league in preseason scoring, spent majority of the year on the shelf, signed elsewhere)

With a track record that stellar, we spent the weekend in deep, deep meditation thinking about who would be the Star for 2010. We like to go with players that aren't the obvious choice. Picking Ales Hemsky to crack the 50 point barrier takes about as much brains as calling Lindsay Lohan to be in porno within 3 years. Likewise picking Taylor Hall to have a good start to his illustrious career is equally safe. We like to find the unsung hero, the guy who is going to exceed his potential and show us all what he is made of.

Take a read of our pick and then name your own. If you are right you will be celebrated for all eternity in the pantheon of hockey geniuses. If you are wrong, well prepare for your own personal end of days.

CELEBRATED STAR PICKS OF 2009

Last year's Star picking generated some awesome drama. Horcoff boosters came out in droves as did many a Hemsky fan. Insults were traded and enemies made.

Here is a look at some of the better picks from last year:

Heh heh. Well played TB.

We respect this pick from bingofuel because he went out on a limb. But that is the risk part of "risk & reward."

The best Star call of the 2009-10 season clealy goes out to anyone who had the stones to pick Penner. The big man shook off a disastrous 2008-09 campaign and lit the lamp 32 times during the campaign. If you had told us this time last year that the Oilers would finish last in the league and yet no one would be mad at Penner we would have punched you squarely in your face for lying to us.

Not only did Victoria call Penner as her Star, she also called injuries on Khabibulin and named her the Goat for the year. This is basically a perfect game and the best combo of the 2009-10 season.

2010-11 STAR

Picking Jordan Eberle - a 20 year old rookie who hasn't played a single game in the NHL - might seem like a bad idea. But on a team with more teenagers than a Justin Bieber concert, going with youth is probably the best move. We feel it is extraordinarily important that everyone understand that Jordan Eberle is going to be our boy. He's ours dammit. Go get your own Jordan Eberle. This one is all ours!

TOMORROW

Picking the goat.

Star: Stortini. Big hits, improved play, several timely goals. Could be Hall's or Eberle's bodyguard ala Semenko.

Goat: Hemsky. Has an inconsistant season, he hasnt played in a while and I think that leads him to get off to a slow and rusty start.

Im going out on a limb since nobody else has said this:

Star: Drunkin' Kabby - maybe the booze will keep his back muscles relaxed and will start roughly 60 games. (honourable mention to Omark who, if given the chance, would outperform all other rookies this year if given top 9 ice time regularly)

Goat: Obviously JFJ - not sure why the hell we signed him anyways, pointless (just like his career)... but since we all know he wont exactly "light it up", ill also pick a lesser obvious one in Hall - caves in to the pressure, learns what happens when you are in the wrong place at the wrong time - he may be fearless in Windsor, but this is the NHL, and he is in for a huge wake up call... but i dont see a sophmore slump in him, he will definitely redeem himself in the years to come.

Star: Horcoff.

A lot to prove after last year and will supply the leadership required for the kids as well as the defensive zone responsibilities that will let the kids fly offensively. His own offensive numbers will bounce back as well as he lives vicariously thru them. Honorable mention: Zack Stortini.

Goat: J.F. Jacques.

Will continue to be too injured to be effective and be overshadowed by an improved Zack Stortini. By November the Nation will be bemoaning the fact he has taken a roster spot from one of the kids (Omark?) and be calling for his head (his back having already left town for good by mid October). Dishonorable Mention: Steve Smith.

I'll pick my star hopeful, one who shouldn't be a first choice, but could be by the end of the year. Brule.

Goat, Foster.

I hope he does good, but I'm hoping to stand out in my picks.

MPS is my second choice for star.

For everyone picking Whitney, let me just remind you that there are two kinds of surgery; the successful kind, and the Michael Jackson nose-job kind. Ask Peter Forsberg about the wonders that foot surgery has done for him.

I hear you, and (I wish I'd been on earlier so I don't just look like a big copycat) I concur. While Pääjärvi may already seem like a pretty safe bet, I think he's going to be even better than projected.

You want out on a limb?

Pääjärvi outscores Penner this year. That's right. I said it. Sic 'em, Boy!

And to Wanye, that clip is twenty different shades of thrillifying. If only I'd gotten paid for my contribution. Dang video pirates.

I was very hard pressed not to choose Hemsky again as my star. In fact, I even voted for him in the poll. I think the guy will be the Oilers leading scorer and the backbone of the offence, but I expect that from him. I'll be disappointed in him if he DOESNT do those things. To be my Star, it would take a 90 point season from Hemsky.

That's why my Star this year will be Cogliano.

Focused all summer on Faceoffs, determined to be better defensively, another year stronger, and in a position to play a bigger role offensively under new coaches. He's also motivated after taking a 1 year deal at less than half the rate of his good friend Sam. I'm calling for a 25-25 come-back Star performance.

Hard pick this year when the line combos are a toss up at this point.

Star: Cogs (because he will play decent enough to be traded and Omark will take his spot on the wing and will look like David Blaine on the ice)

Goat: Bulin (will play too well win 3 to 5 games on his own which will give the Oil too many point to get a lottery pick)

Sorry Wanye, Eberle will start with the club but will spend at least 20 games on the farm to give him more ice.

*hides under desk for when Wanye breaks in to stab me*

Honorable mention: Foster (love this signing)

For the record it was just too obvious to pick Hemsky as the star. The guy doesn't get enough credit for being the only consistent offensive player we have had since the lockout.

Picking Hemsky as the star would be like picking Gretzky first overall in a hockey draft (back in the day)...no brainer!

@ Archaeologuy

I am still rooting hard for Seguin all year. Oh, yes, my friend. They'll be sorry, just you wait.

And I really wanted to choose Cogs again. I swear I did. But something in the air doesn't feel right to me about him; there's a chill that escapes whenever I say his name. I know he's going to bust his hump this year, but . . . you know, I think the Oilers have already given up on him. Signing him to a bargain contract was just their way of locking up some trade-bait with a positive value. I wish to heck that Andy would get a nice long look on the second-line and show everyone that he's the star we've all been waiting for . . . but I think that it's everything Tambi can do to keep from yelling "Dead Man Skating!"" every time he sees him on the ice. May the mercy bullet come sooner rather than later, Cogs. You deserve a real shot.
