STAR PICKING TIME

Wanye
September 20 2010 02:26PM

It is one of our favourite days here at the OilersNation. The day where we all go out on a limb and declare our Star for the upcoming season.

For the uninitiated, we started picking our favourite player and our designated whipping Goat back in 2005. We did so as a means of being able to later gloat "man, did we ever pick the best Star this year" and also be able to gleefully flay our Goat night after night, game after game without mercy or concern of "being a bad fan" during the season.

Picking your star and making him "your guy" for the year can be richly rewarding. We always think back to our buddy Lee who picked Pisani to have a breakout year back in 2006. As he tore the playoffs a new corn chute, Lee was held in equally high regard as Saint Fernando himself. With each passing goal, we would shake our heads in wonder.

Not at Pisani having an out of body experience for two months - but at our buddy who had the foresight to call it. That's the kind of glory Star pickers can get if it is done right.

HISTORY

Generally our Star will fold under the immense pressure of living with our fanboy endorsement and we will spend the season shaking our heads at what we were thinking back in early September. It's virtually a kiss of death.

2005-06: Chris Pronger (had great season, broke our collective hearts after)

2006-07: Ryan Smyth (traded at during the season, broke our collective hearts)

2007-08: Shawn Horcoff (lit the lamp like crazy, got hurt)

2008-09: Erik Cole (played like crap, demanded to go back to Carolina)

2009-10: Mike Comrie (led the league in preseason scoring, spent majority of the year on the shelf, signed elsewhere)

With a track record that stellar, we spent the weekend in deep, deep meditation thinking about who would be the Star for 2010. We like to go with players that aren't the obvious choice. Picking Ales Hemsky to crack the 50 point barrier takes about as much brains as calling Lindsay Lohan to be in porno within 3 years. Likewise picking Taylor Hall to have a good start to his illustrious career is equally safe. We like to find the unsung hero, the guy who is going to exceed his potential and show us all what he is made of.

Take a read of our pick and then name your own. If you are right you will be celebrated for all eternity in the pantheon of hockey geniuses. If you are wrong, well prepare for your own personal end of days.

CELEBRATED STAR PICKS OF 2009

Last year's Star picking generated some awesome drama. Horcoff boosters came out in droves as did many a Hemsky fan. Insults were traded and enemies made.

Here is a look at some of the better picks from last year:

Heh heh. Well played TB.

We respect this pick from bingofuel because he went out on a limb. But that is the risk part of "risk & reward."

The best Star call of the 2009-10 season clealy goes out to anyone who had the stones to pick Penner. The big man shook off a disastrous 2008-09 campaign and lit the lamp 32 times during the campaign. If you had told us this time last year that the Oilers would finish last in the league and yet no one would be mad at Penner we would have punched you squarely in your face for lying to us.

Not only did Victoria call Penner as her Star, she also called injuries on Khabibulin and named her the Goat for the year. This is basically a perfect game and the best combo of the 2009-10 season.

2010-11 STAR

Picking Jordan Eberle - a 20 year old rookie who hasn't played a single game in the NHL - might seem like a bad idea. But on a team with more teenagers than a Justin Bieber concert, going with youth is probably the best move. We feel it is extraordinarily important that everyone understand that Jordan Eberle is going to be our boy. He's ours dammit. Go get your own Jordan Eberle. This one is all ours!

TOMORROW

Picking the goat.

On this note, my buddies and I like to pick the game's Three Rats for the three worst players of each game. It adds a new element to watch for.

If MPS makes the team, I'll pick him to beat all Oilers rookies in scoring.

I pick JDD to be the goat and get a few game starts, post below .900 SP and spend the rest of the season in the minors.

Ever since he graced the Oil with his glorious presence, Penner has been my star.

The goat: Horcoff He's the leader now. If we learned anything from "The Apprentice" after 10 seasons is that Donald Trump's hair will live long after he is gone and that a loss is usually the Project Manager's fault.

Simple...

Star : Jeff Drouin-Deslauriers*

Goat : Sheldon Souray**

*If he gets even one win he will have doubled everyone's expectations... And the math gets exponentially better each win thereafter.

** Even if we get a full bag of pucks back for him, the first time he takes out half of Horcoff's teeth with a blast from the point, I win!

Star: Sam Gagner - He was expecting more out of himself last year and the extra muscle he put on in the off season will help him become our #1 center by years end.

Goat: Nikolai Khabibulin - I was gonna say Mike Commodore but in light of no trade yet I think Khabi will either be on the bench or in the pressbox by seasons end.

Star: Hemsky!! Not because the crazy, swingin' Czech will get 50pts this year, but because he will get 80+ pts!! Hesmky will be our All-Star and I will gain the adoration of the Nations.

Goat: Kurtis Foster. I really want to like him but I predict a slew of injuries and being forced to rely on someone like him as one of our top defensive options. A Staiosian debacle is likely.

Star: Kurtis Foster Yep, he will surprise. Has some comebacks to complete. We will see him in the all-star game. Will emerge with a big shot from the point and show a big defensive shut-down touch, and his size is enough to scare

Dark Horse: (not much of one but...) Magnus Pääjärvi Calder winner!

Goat:I hate to say it.... Andrew Cogliano..... sorry buddy, I like how you came into the NHL in your rookie year, but, you're probably just auditioning for a trade

Horcoff and Penner switch places.

Horcoff, after a slow start because he get's only 3rd line duties, becomes the #1 centre again when Gagner has an even worse start...then he and Hemmer rekindle the old flame (The flame being the goal light)

Penner will not be terrible, but will hardly score 20 this season, causing Oil County to implode when we realize he isn't the 2nd coming of Cam Neely, and is actually just Dustin Penner...a pretty good hockey player.

And I didn't want to bother going to the goalies since Khabibulin will be serviceable when he gets into game form by December, JDD will be in OKC with Gerber after not being taken on waivers and D-Dubz will play well in his backup role that eventually turns into the starter when ScabbyBulin get injured

Last year I picked Horcoff for my star and Moreau for my goat. At least i got one right. I am a big believer in Horcoff as a hockey player. I think last year's mess was mostly because of injury.

Having said that, the true star of the team is Hemmer. Many nights, he is well worth the price of admission. Let's hope he stays healthy.

The goat of the team will be the defence corps. Nothing a couple of $5,000,000 dmen would not fix. Think we could trade Souray for Keith and Seabrook?

If I may briefly deviate from my doom and gloom, I think that's a good pick. I think it's the wrong pick, because I have a hard time envisioning us looking back on the 2010-2011 season and identifying a third pairing defenseman as our star, but I think he's one of the very few guys on the team with a good chance to exceed fans' expectations. At even strength, for example, I think he's a better defenseman than Foster.

Im going to go off the charts with this one but I believe Vandermeer will be the star player for the Oilers when it comes to physical toughness, sticking up for players and playing with the grit that the Oilers and fans have been beggin to see from players. I watched a fight with Vandermeer and Boogard and yes Vandy lost with a ko punch from Boogieman but the fight started with Vandermeer sticking up for a player after Boogard had been bullying him all the way down the ice. Very smart trade to get him even tho it was just to get rid of POS
