STAR PICKING TIME

Wanye
September 20 2010 02:26PM

It is one of our favourite days here at the OilersNation. The day where we all go out on a limb and declare our Star for the upcoming season.

For the uninitiated, we started picking our favourite player and our designated whipping Goat back in 2005. We did so as a means of being able to later gloat "man, did we ever pick the best Star this year" and also be able to gleefully flay our Goat night after night, game after game without mercy or concern of "being a bad fan" during the season.

Picking your star and making him "your guy" for the year can be richly rewarding. We always think back to our buddy Lee who picked Pisani to have a breakout year back in 2006. As he tore the playoffs a new corn chute, Lee was held in equally high regard as Saint Fernando himself. With each passing goal, we would shake our heads in wonder.

Not at Pisani having an out of body experience for two months - but at our buddy who had the foresight to call it. That's the kind of glory Star pickers can get if it is done right.

HISTORY

Generally our Star will fold under the immense pressure of living with our fanboy endorsement and we will spend the season shaking our heads at what we were thinking back in early September. It's virtually a kiss of death.

2005-06: Chris Pronger (had great season, broke our collective hearts after)

2006-07: Ryan Smyth (traded at during the season, broke our collective hearts)

2007-08: Shawn Horcoff (lit the lamp like crazy, got hurt)

2008-09: Erik Cole (played like crap, demanded to go back to Carolina)

2009-10: Mike Comrie (led the league in preseason scoring, spent majority of the year on the shelf, signed elsewhere)

With a track record that stellar, we spent the weekend in deep, deep meditation thinking about who would be the Star for 2010. We like to go with players that aren't the obvious choice. Picking Ales Hemsky to crack the 50 point barrier takes about as much brains as calling Lindsay Lohan to be in porno within 3 years. Likewise picking Taylor Hall to have a good start to his illustrious career is equally safe. We like to find the unsung hero, the guy who is going to exceed his potential and show us all what he is made of.

Take a read of our pick and then name your own. If you are right you will be celebrated for all eternity in the pantheon of hockey geniuses. If you are wrong, well prepare for your own personal end of days.

CELEBRATED STAR PICKS OF 2009

Last year's Star picking generated some awesome drama. Horcoff boosters came out in droves as did many a Hemsky fan. Insults were traded and enemies made.

Here is a look at some of the better picks from last year:

Heh heh. Well played TB.

We respect this pick from bingofuel because he went out on a limb. But that is the risk part of "risk & reward."

The best Star call of the 2009-10 season clealy goes out to anyone who had the stones to pick Penner. The big man shook off a disastrous 2008-09 campaign and lit the lamp 32 times during the campaign. If you had told us this time last year that the Oilers would finish last in the league and yet no one would be mad at Penner we would have punched you squarely in your face for lying to us.

Not only did Victoria call Penner as her Star, she also called injuries on Khabibulin and named her the Goat for the year. This is basically a perfect game and the best combo of the 2009-10 season.

2010-11 STAR

Picking Jordan Eberle - a 20 year old rookie who hasn't played a single game in the NHL - might seem like a bad idea. But on a team with more teenagers than a Justin Bieber concert, going with youth is probably the best move. We feel it is extraordinarily important that everyone understand that Jordan Eberle is going to be our boy. He's ours dammit. Go get your own Jordan Eberle. This one is all ours!

TOMORROW

Picking the goat.

Star: Ladislav Smid. I expect a stud defensive year out of him. Knocking people around, cutting back on mistakes and generally giving the blue some stability. Also I predict he matches his rookie season goal output with 3 to almost double his career total. With little depth on the backend he also needs to stay healthy to give this team a fighting chance, and I think he will.

Shawn Horcoff.

He will lead our youngsters into battle and once again score at the All-Star pace he was back in 07-08. His contract won't look so soggy and bloated like it has ever since he signed it.

Damn you, I cant pick Eberle without sounding like a fanboy now! Also, he's the gf favorite Oiler now (supposedly hes the new hottest Oiler after Souray gone).

So I will go out on a large limb.

Star: Kurtis Foster

Goat: JFJ

Tempted to pick JDD as the goat but I think the Oilers will pick up on that soon enough and JDD either will be plucked from waivers or be in OKC.

Shouldn't we be waiting until the roster is finalized? I mean, picking the star won't be too tough but picking the goat requires us to know who the head scratching selections are.

Gagner would be my star. Chorney would be my goat but I'm not sure if he starts.*

*Hope to god he doesn't

My star for this year will be Paajarvi. Calder winner, 60 points and finishing the season on the top line with Hemsky.

My goat will be Gagner. He will improve over last season but will prove, decisively, that he is not the #1 centre the Oilers are looking for.

Baggedmilk picks his star today. After minutes of deliberation, baggedmilk's star selection goes to the Molson Sales Rep that has Rexall on his list of contracts.

I am willing to bet that more $28 dollar beers will be consumed at Rexall than anywhere else in the history of the world.

Molson Sales Rep = Star

The Rest of Us for Buying $28 beers = Goat

I like the Horcoff pick. With all of the heads looking at TMJ, someone has to be the guy who performs. 2 shite years, he is due for another good year.

When was the last time our captain had 60 points...

So my star pick is Horcoff.

Last year I picked Star: Penner, Goat: Moreau (post #42 in the previous year's thread) which worked out pretty well if I do say so.

This year I am going with:

Star: Penner (shows he is the real deal) Goat: Vandermeer (he's the new Moreau... maybe not so many offensive zone penalties, but still)

As for the rooks, I'll go on the record now and say Paajarvi leads the big 3 in points.

Omark will have a breakout season, he'll make us forget about those 3 youngin's we're bringing in and make 29 teams wish they picked him a round earlier.

Goat is Cogs. As much as I love him, he's going to get pushed around in the face-off circle, pushed around near the boards, and tease me by not scoring on the shorthanded breakaways I want him to deliver on.

How Strudwick makes that list and not Foster is beyond me, but I went with Penner. He is one of the most proven guys on this team and he is the least likely to get injuried, although maybe he is do.

It's hard to pick a star when nearly every player is being set up for failure because of an over-shallow roster. I'll go with Andrew Cogliano because he's maybe the only guy on the team with expectations lower than likely performance. I'd like Horcoff's chances of a rebound year better if he wasn't still the only centre we have with a proven ability to play tough minutes (and he didn't even look much good doing that last year). My initial pick was Hemsky, but he won't get the solid linemates to which he's accustomed, which suggests that this won't be a career year. Penner would be an okay pick, but he's coming off a career year the first half of which he spent scoring at an unsustainable rate. And, as with Horcoff and Hemsky, he's going to be relied on to do some babysitting. Our rookies are being thrown into the deep end without lifejackets, and expectations are so artificially high on them that it's unlikely that they can meet them, let alone exceed them. I like our fourth line, but fourth liners don't get to be heroes (not while staying on the fourth line all season, anyway). On defense, pretty much everyone is playing one pairing above where they'd ideally play, which makes it unlikely that any of them are going to look good (even though many are fine NHLers). I'll call Dubnyk my second choice, but it says something that I wouldn't even put big money on him to make the NHL out of camp (I think he will, I just wouldn't bet the farm on it).

Goat is hard for the opposite reason: there are so many to choose from. At least one of the rookies will fall well short of expectations, but I'm not sure you can be the Oilers' goat from Oklahoma City. Horcoff will still be overpaid next year, so he'll get picked on relentlessly even if he does well while called upon to do an impossible job. On defense, the fans have an irrational hatred of Tom Gilbert, who's a fine defenseman (and not an overpaid one), so he's going to take a lot of heat when he struggles to be our top defenseman. With all the excitement about the Kurtis Foster signing, everybody seems to have missed the fact that there's precious little evidence that he can actually play even strength defense against any but the softest minutes, so he's my second pick for goat. My first pick, though, is a guy who's just screaming to come back down to earth after an outlier of a contract year; not only will Gilbert Brule fail to meet the heightened expectations of him this year, I suspect that his boxcars will fall short of last year's.

If the Oilers go into the season with an NHL lineup consisting only of guys who are currently at camp, this is a bottom five team, and I'd be happy to make a friendly wager to that effect with any of the resident optimists.

If MPS makes the team, I'll pick him to beat all Oilers rookies in scoring.
