STAR PICKING TIME

Wanye
September 20 2010 02:26PM

It is one of our favourite days here at the OilersNation. The day where we all go out on a limb and declare our Star for the upcoming season.

For the uninitiated, we started picking our favourite player and our designated whipping Goat back in 2005. We did so as a means of being able to later gloat "man, did we ever pick the best Star this year" and also be able to gleefully flay our Goat night after night, game after game without mercy or concern of "being a bad fan" during the season.

Picking your star and making him "your guy" for the year can be richly rewarding. We always think back to our buddy Lee who picked Pisani to have a breakout year back in 2006. As he tore the playoffs a new corn chute, Lee was held in equally high regard as Saint Fernando himself. With each passing goal, we would shake our heads in wonder.

Not at Pisani having an out of body experience for two months - but at our buddy who had the foresight to call it. That's the kind of glory Star pickers can get if it is done right.

HISTORY

Generally our Star will fold under the immense pressure of living with our fanboy endorsement and we will spend the season shaking our heads at what we were thinking back in early September. It's virtually a kiss of death.

2005-06: Chris Pronger (had great season, broke our collective hearts after)

2006-07: Ryan Smyth (traded at during the season, broke our collective hearts)

2007-08: Shawn Horcoff (lit the lamp like crazy, got hurt)

2008-09: Erik Cole (played like crap, demanded to go back to Carolina)

2009-10: Mike Comrie (led the league in preseason scoring, spent majority of the year on the shelf, signed elsewhere)

With a track record that stellar, we spent the weekend in deep, deep meditation thinking about who would be the Star for 2010. We like to go with players that aren't the obvious choice. Picking Ales Hemsky to crack the 50 point barrier takes about as much brains as calling Lindsay Lohan to be in porno within 3 years. Likewise picking Taylor Hall to have a good start to his illustrious career is equally safe. We like to find the unsung hero, the guy who is going to exceed his potential and show us all what he is made of.

Take a read of our pick and then name your own. If you are right you will be celebrated for all eternity in the pantheon of hockey geniuses. If you are wrong, well prepare for your own personal end of days.

CELEBRATED STAR PICKS OF 2009

Last year's Star picking generated some awesome drama. Horcoff boosters came out in droves as did many a Hemsky fan. Insults were traded and enemies made.

Here is a look at some of the better picks from last year:

Heh heh. Well played TB.

We respect this pick from bingofuel because he went out on a limb. But that is the risk part of "risk & reward."

The best Star call of the 2009-10 season clealy goes out to anyone who had the stones to pick Penner. The big man shook off a disastrous 2008-09 campaign and lit the lamp 32 times during the campaign. If you had told us this time last year that the Oilers would finish last in the league and yet no one would be mad at Penner we would have punched you squarely in your face for lying to us.

Not only did Victoria call Penner as her Star, she also called injuries on Khabibulin and named her the Goat for the year. This is basically a perfect game and the best combo of the 2009-10 season.

2010-11 STAR

Picking Jordan Eberle - a 20 year old rookie who hasn't played a single game in the NHL - might seem like a bad idea. But on a team with more teenagers than a Justin Bieber concert, going with youth is probably the best move. We feel it is extraordinarily important that everyone understand that Jordan Eberle is going to be our boy. He's ours dammit. Go get your own Jordan Eberle. This one is all ours!

TOMORROW

Picking the goat.

Well yeah, my connection sucks at home so its going to take me 2 freakin' hours just for that 7 minute youtube clip to buffer... hence the no comment.

As for my star i'm going to have to go with Horcoff. I can see a few options for him this year that will hold out as star material.

1) He returns to form and puts up numbers from a few years ago, earning the #1 centre position and also helps Hemsky break out as well.

2) One of the kids outplays him for the #1 centre position and he is used in a defined shutdown role whilst quietly putting up points.

Either way I don't see him living up to his $700 million dollar contract anytime soon but i have resigned myself to that fact and accept it.

One other thing to add... Great news everyone!!! My girlfriend has decided that she hates Calgary and I no longer have to move down there, instead she is moving up here :)

The rumours wont stop coming, but with a serious lack of Centres in the organization, he might be able to last the full season. If the Oilers end up taking a lottery pick Centre next draft day, then I think he's gone for sure.

If he pulls his socks up in the faceoff dot, then he can prove to Oiler Brass that he can be a usefull Oiler for the future.

And since I have taken him as my Star, it is my duty to support him blindly.

Good gravy I could clean the rink with my tears this year. Last year too. I also could have cleaned out the draft lines at Rexall with the pressure of my rage, which started building about 11 seconds into the season

Touche. Fair enough. There will be more good things to watch this year after the injuries happen in my opinion, though. So, "don't cry, dry your eye"...

this year again like last i will have to pick Andrew Cogliano as my star for this team. He is fast and can put the puck in the net (when not on the 4th line with a few players twice his age and a third his foot speed.) Mostly this i just me hoping my favorite oiler will not only have a great year....but might remain an oiler till seasons end and beyond. Also i think Horcoff is a perfect goat again, not because of all the money hes making, its because hes used none of said money to repair his large nose which we all know is just weighting him off a little bit so he misses every shot by just a little.

Sheesh, such a difficult call. . . One thing we know, (I think,) is that the rookies will become more comfortable as time goes by. A second thing we know, (I think,) is that the team will gel and the team, as well as the rookies, will gel. (Don't be shocked if come March the team goes on a run.)

All the above blah blah said, sure looks to me like Eberle is going to surprise a few people. He may not have more points than all the other rookies, but he'll almost certainly have more assists. So much depends on the make-up of the lines. (Second goes to Brule, third to Gagne.)

Goat: Well, hmmmm. A few choices is what we got here, more than one of the lads has potential. Guess it's gotta be JF but Khabibulin could sure give him a run for his money. If neither of these guys play 30 games, the winner becomes Mr. Strudwick, who may be a wonderful fellow, and may in future be a wonderful coach, but in the here and now is a revolving turnstile.

Star - Horcoff, dunno about 1C, but he finds his touch again and stays healthy. Mentors the kids the way it should be done and leads by example (cya Capt. Penalty!). Receives the C because he knows where the future of the team is and is a part of building that.

Goat - Gagner... sorta. Just shy of the 1C expectations due to typical slow start, lack of size, and injuries here and there. I'm not sure his plan of dropping weight for quickness works out so well for young Samwise.

I think Gagner starts first line early in the season, Horcoff on the 3rd with two Jedi younglings. But 20 or so games in Gagner gets the bump down to the 2nd, Horcoff & Hemsky reunited.

Obviously, Omark is the Star, he and Hemsky will be the dancing twins of blondness and flurry.

The Goat, Shawn Horcoff, he is going to suck so bad, and wiff on so many beauty passes; Oxford will have to find funding, staff and receive collegial endorsements to redefine the work "suck" (in their esteemed book of word defining) so that it can better embody suckiness, in order to more accurately describe Horcoff’s play (none of the aforementioned resources should be difficult to procure, as Horcoff’s play will make the undertaking an evident necessity). In effect, Horcoff will make suck, suck more than the word’s current linguistic limits.

Im Picking Martin Gerber for Star. When we signed him this summer I was very confused (and very drunk at the time, which didn't help the confusion) but now I can see that when the dominoes fall, the old drunk breaks his back, and JDD fails it will be up to DD and MG to take up the role. I'd love for them to push each other but I think Gerber will outperform and end up with 40 games by the end of the season. He could have won that 2006 Cup, he was unlucky with Ward. I think it is his time to return to form.

Controversial Goat pick: Hall.

I'm stepping up with Horcoff as my star and Tambellini / Lowe as my goat.

Horcoff, not because he will rack up a bunch of points, but because he will again quietly work his ass off without complaining and refuse to hang his head, even if he misses scoring chances. Also because he'll prove his worth as captain.

Tambellini / Lowe because I can't fault any of the players who may be goats for being asked to do more than they are able to. Can anybody really fault the rookies if they've been thrust into positions they're not ready for? Or for that matter, players like Smid and Foster who will be asked to perform in roles they haven't succeeded in yet? No; this falls on management.
