Oh Canada!

Team Canada plays the Americans today in the latest battle with our friends to the south. The World Juniors have a special place in the hearts of this nation, partly because it's a preview of coming attractions (see photo). Edmonton Oiler fans have learned to pay special attention to the World Juniors over the years. It's a chance to see future Oilers and has been from the beginning.

Pick a former Oiler star and chances are he played for Team Canada at the World Junior's. Here's a partial list:

  • Dave Hunter 7gp, 6-0-6 (1977)
  • Wayne Gretzky 6gp, 8-9-17 (1978)
  • Marc Habscheid 7gp, 6-6-12 (1982)
  • Gord Sherven 7gp, 1-3-4 (1983)
  • Jeff Beukeboom 3gp, 1-0-1 (1985)
  • Selmar Odelein 7gp, 1-5-6 (1985)
  • Emanuel Viveiros 7gp, 1-1-2 (1986)
  • Martin Gelinas 7gp, 0-2-2 (1989)
  • Geoff Smith 7gp, 0-1-1 (1989)
  • Ralph Intranuovo 7gp, 3-2-5 (1993)
  • Tyler Wright 7gp, 3-3-6 (1993)
  • Nick Stadjuhar 7gp, 1-4-5 (1994)
  • Ryan Smyth 7gp, 2-5-7 (1995)
  • Mike Watt 5gp, 1-2-3 (1996)
  • Boyd Devereaux 7gp, 4-0-4 (1997)
  • Jason Chimera 7gp, 2-2-4 (1999)
  • Jarret Stoll 7gp, 0-2-2 (2001)
  • Danny Syvret 6gp, 1-2-3 (2005)
  • Andrew Cogliano 6gp, 1-4-5 (2006)
  • Andrew Cogliano 6gp, 1-2-3 (2007)
  • Sam Gagner 6gp, 0-0-0 (2007)
  • Jordan Eberle 6gp, 6-7-13 (2009)
  • Jordan Eberle 6gp, 8-5-13 (2010)
  • Taylor Hall 6gp, 6-6-12 (2010)

Curtis Hamilton and Olivier Roy joined that list this season. That's a helluva list.

The ultimate prize awaits four teams: Canada, Russia, Sweden and the United States of America. Canada is not the favorite, in fact a reasonable seeding would have them 3rd behind the Swedes and the defending champions. Never go against Canada when the sporting event takes place on ice or involves drinking adult beverages WITH ice. It's a loser's bet.

Game time for RUS-SWE is 1:30 this afternoon and the CAN-USA game goes at 5pm. tsn has the video and Team 1260 the audio.

Bless you boys, bring back the Zeta-Jones.

I'm fairly certain Belfour and Cujo were drafted outside of that time period.

Once again ebb, you need to read the entire contents of an entry before debating it.

No, not at all, he played a couple of bad games! How could anyone go on to an NHL career after playing a couple of bad games as a teenager. Particularly a goalie, I mean, everyone knows that once a goalie plays even one bad game in their career, they are pretty much a write off.

Interesting numbers, LT, interesting to note that Gags went 0 for the tourney, and that Ebbs put up 13pts each time. Not that that means anything, just interesting. Old Prendergast was not the devil. He picked up Petry and Peckham in the second round (which is where defensemen should be drafted) Matt Greene and Stolly in the second. He was a solid second round drafter, excusing Hemsky, couldnt get it done in the first round. Would you have taken Voracek over Gags in 07?

Guess we should've seen that one coming eh?

Ironically he did play like a fifth round pick....or shall we wait on him for 8 yrs as well like the Oilers did for Deslaurier? Maybe it's better to see the crack in the foundation now before they waste their time.

cujO and the eagle were never drafted all harps back to the same argument goalies are a crapshoot... where is pogge rright now ? there is just something to be said for conz who has not only had ONE tourney run hes done it two years in a row how you could try and defy logic by not considering how many ACTUAL pucks the said player lets in is beyond me

Punctuation and grammar exist for a reason. If you are incapable of using them then you shouldn't be allowed to post.

Fine, I'll give you the cujo and belfour argument...

As for:

a) How many actual pucks he lets in? Not including this year, during his last three international competitions he's had a GAA of 3.25, 4.95, 4.76. You may want to rethink your argument there.

b) Don't start another Penner debate, we'll disagree in that regard as well.

Look, this Conz kid obviously has some talent, but I don't think he's shown enough to warrant the 45,987,011 comments related to his not being drafted. Nuff said, by me anyway.

I am pretty sure the knife, fork & spoon used by Penner and Hall are very comparable, but Dustin's may be worn down a bit more.

The only thing Penner has over Hall in terms of physical ability is size. While the big guy has a good set of hands and reads the game well, he can't skate and stickhandle anywhere close to Hall.

It's a lot more than drive on display with Hall, but his motor is his best asset to be sure.

It would be interesting to have you list what must be the many aspects of Penners game where you feel he falls short, are you just going casual fan gut on this, or are there actual valid reasons to support your opinion?

The tournament of small sample sizes rears it's ugly head again!

A 6-8 game sample size in the middle of December doesn't seem like a really good way to bet your money when looking to judge a players future.

When it comes to guys like Roy and Conz, do you use a tiny sample size or do you use their whole body of work?

Even if Conz is able to "step up in the big games" that doesn't help you in the other games leading up to those select few big games.

Roy is what he is... a small reflex goalie that's going to have to adjust his game to be a successful pro.

Conz is much the same way. He's not exactly dominating a lower tier mens league in the same way other euro goalies in the NHL have, which is why he's been passed over.

Darn, there goes our chance at the lottery pick.

Between O-Tube jump starting the PP & Red Ox plugging the PK leaks this team should be duking it out with the fLames for 8th place.

Maybe they make a deadline deal for Marty Sakic to take defensive zone face-offs and before you know it, my lawn will be overgrown because I am watching the Oilers every other night in June.

Out of the two call-ups, which one do you think is more excited? I hope Rudy finds a way to put up a Gordie Howe hattrick before people start getting healthy again. At this point, I have little hope that he'll ever be a real Oiler, but if he can just play well enough to get noticed then maybe the Oilers can trade him for a good prospect and everyone can win. I'd love to see the Red Ox finally make it in the Show, even if he has to wear another jersey to do it.

I completely disagree, he has much to learn at the NHL level....yes, but as for the AHL....1 goal 4 assists in two games. Just let him play in the top six, not on the third line with O'Marra.

Maybe you have a point. Just like Hall PRV, and Eberle, maybe he needs some NHL seasoning.

I just think that his defensive game will improve more in the AHL and ease him into it a bit better.
