GDB 32.0: Y U MAD?

Wanye
December 17 2011 01:45PM

Gregor asked your ol' pal Wanye to handle the GDB today on account of the fact he is "handing out hampers to less fortunate Edmonton families today." If there is ever a reason to bang out a 400 word article for a guy in a pinch, this has to be it.

But be forewarned we aren't in any mood to objectively look at this Oilers squadron and find a way to suggest they are going to win.

Nor are we in a mood to serve up another triple helping of negativity. We have had our fill of that too of late.

And so we will take a third approach to this GDB. We try and take the temperature of our fellow Oilers fans to see where all of our heads are at on the 32nd game of the year.

THE GLASS IS HALF FULL

On the one hand we are living in a world where three Oilers are in the top 30 in scoring in the NHL. The last time this happened we were enrolled in elementary school, Jason Gregor had a full head of hair and Rexall Place was considered a state-of-the-art facility capable of hosting Oilers hockey well into the next century.

3 guys in the top 30? Two of them are under 22? There is another Super Sophmore that isn't on the list because he was hurt?

Some folks will tell you that this is more than enough joy for a team that is coming off back to back last place seasons in the NHL. "Rome wasn't built in a day" they will say, looking to the distant horizon - presumably dreaming about Rome.

For the glass is half full camp, there is nothing to be concerned about here. Nothing - not even another season on the outside looking in at the playoffs - can reverse the progress made or diminish the potential of this team in the next decade.

THE GLASS IS HALF EMPTY

Even those who count themselves among the pessimistic group of Oilers fans are in far better shape than they were a couple of years ago. We aren't exactly trying to pretend that Patrick O'Sullivan will be a servicable NHL player for years to come anymore.

You can't find a fan or critic anywhere that will try and diminish the impact Jordan Eberle, Taylor Hall and MC NUUUUUUUGE have already had on the NHL and most won't even try and put a wet blanket on what they are capable of doing in their careers.

No, for the Glass is half empty crowd it is precisely because the Oilers are laden with this impossible bounty of freshly minted talent that this season is so frustrating. "How can you go from first to worst in such fashion? Where are the veteran leaders paid to guide these sophmores and rookies through the turbulent waters of an NHL season? Why are the Captains and Assistants sitting around waiting for the Kids to do something on most nights?"

Make no mistake - Daryl "Kay-Z" Katz is going to need a winner to sell out this new building due to arrive in 2023. Say what you want about the silent owner, he didn't become a Billionaire by overpaying under delivering staff along the way.Sooner or later something will give if things don't improve.

You can bet on it.

WHAT WILL HAPPEN?

It is impossible to predict the future. Unless you are the people who made the video above back in the 1960s. At that point it seems it was entirely possible to predict the future with stunning accuracy.

What if this isn't simply a losing streak? What if the Oilers miss the playoffs for the sixth year in a row? Can Steve Tambellini really expect long term employment when his team will have failed so miserably under his watch?

Can his phasers be permanently set to "assessing" before someone is going to ask what he is doing exactly to earn his paycheque? How many years in a row can he ignore the pressing need to improve in size and grit on both the front and back ends?

Are third and fourth defensemen so hard to find that we can't hope to bring another one in to Edmonton in any reasonable timeline? Is Ales Hemsky going be left to rot on the vine until he has injury-plagued his disinterest into half of the market value he was worth a few years ago?

What will become of our favourite NHL Ice Hockey Squadron?

LINEUPS

The Oilers finally tweeted their lineup a few minutes ago:

4-93-14

94-89-83

10-20-28

55-57-16

No D pairings have been tweeted and if the starting goalie has been announced we haven't seen it.

How's that for some inside information?

So there is one line that has people on it known to win their share of faceoffs. Three that don't.

What can possibly go wrong?

And good call Halfwise. Whats the over/under on our faceoff win percentage tonight?

Explain to me why Belanger continues to be on the 3rd line. The only game he's looked reasonably effective was last game and that was because he had Smyrh and Jones as wingers...except he didn't cash on any of his good chances.

Stick him on the 4th with 57 & 16 and move 55 onto the 3rd line and get him involved. He can still pk but has been a black hole offensively.

Eager looked pretty p.o.'d in Phoenix with how he was being used. When he was up on the 3rd he got involved and scored. Now he's going to get 8 mins with Hordi, that'll really perk him up

Oilers finally get excited to play a game after playing losers like CGY and PHX. Oilers win 4-2, Samuel Gagner gets a point and NUUUUUGE fights Thornton and Marleau at the same time, winning by dual KO.

GDP: Lander scores a shorty and a greasy one from the goal line in the 1st 20. Oilers win 2-0 with the bruised and beaten carcass of NK getting the W.

OGDP: Sharks will win 82% of the faceoffs while Horcoff is playing on the wing on the 3rd line.

NSOGDP: Gagner will get offered a special discount price on McGinn's Princess Dress that was advertised on the Shark's Holiday Shopping Channel. He will happily accept take this...

This linup actually makes sense to me.A little grit on each line and Gagner back to center. As to faceoffs Nuge is learning, up to 39% now and considering first 10 games at 20% he must be close to breaking even most nights

Will it help, probably not as our defence is still a mess

Also, what's the over/under on Hemsky's "lost pucks just inside the opposing blueline" stat tonight?

I am kinda thinking if they keep giving the kind of efforts they have the past couple of games, one would have to wonder how long Mr. Renney will be employed. Don't get me wrong I think this is an exciting team to watch when they are going, and they are going to win a cup in the next few years, but those lack of effort games are tuff to take.

"Can Steve Tambellini really expect long term employment when his team..?

Here is an answer about "his" team:

LEADERSHIP! What did people like Bowman, Sather, Arbour, even Keenan had in common (successes notwithstanding)!

They were the kind of MEN who COMMANDED attention!

They did not manage and coach by committee! Their teams were THEIR teams, win, lose or draw!

That is not to say that they did not work well with others in their organizations. But the teams were THEIR teams! Their players were THEIR players. They enjoyed their players' respect (and a little bit of fear)....

The Oilers management of today are more like a committee of little bureaucrats of individuals hiding behind the "organization"... Mr. GM is conferring with Mr. President, who is conferring with Mr. Coach who is conferring with the Assistant Coaches and Mr. GM who is again conferring with Mr..... and so on.

There is no PERSONALITY who LEADS this organization off the ice and that has come to be the norm ON the ice too!

I can see the fire in little Hall's eyes (something like the Messier days) the intelligence in RNH's play... I doubt that any of them will be even inspired to assume leadership roles on the ice - even when they are ready!

It takes VERY STRONG spine for a man to step forward and say this is MY team - and take the responsibility for it!

The kind of spine that NO-ONE in the current management team has.... (Sorry Kevin, you are a great guy but you are no leader like Mark was).

Bowman and Sather were never "politically correct" people! They were LEADERS! You looked in their eyes and you were almost terrified of what they would do if you did not DO what they asked you to!

These were MEN!

Mr. Renney reminds me of a meek bookkeeper of the movies any time a look at him, Mr. Tambellini always sounds like the spineless politician he should be and trying to always say the right thing so his "chair" and salary is not in danger...

Gentlemen, go home! I regret to say that you are not fit to lead anything, not even the little "battles" these kids on the ice need to always win so that you can keep collecting salaries! You can not inspire them! Keep hiding behind the "re-building" process!

You should resign out of embarrassment.

But I forget: Only real leaders have pride!

belanger would look good in the Rangers lineup on the 3rd line. Here he is nothing more than a statistics nightmare. He has no offensive mojo but can win a drw and kill penalties like no ones buisness. He is a 3 year impediment to someone elses career. Maybe Tambo needs to assess what he has gotten from him,Eager and Barker. let me sum it up.Bupkiss

Try and atleast make a difference when they go to work everyday. Where's the pride, where's the direction. This decision by committee method of running a hockey club is epic fail.

Ok hockey.

Van and Toronto welcome us all down to the mediocrity plaza for a sad looking slice of pizza and a knock-off soda.

The Oil rise to the occasion of sterner competition and Gagner proves the wisdom of being picked ahead of Couture by scoring 2 and a helper. RNH has a panic attack in the 2nd intermission when visited by the ghost of Mike Ricci. Hordy shows his teeth and saves the day by scaring off Mike Ricci's ghost and gives RNH a fatherly pat on the head. Oilers win 4-2!

Game Day Prediction: Oilers start a six game winning streak tonight with a 2-1 win in San Jose.

Obvious Game Day Prediction:It's HNIC... The Nuge will be great.

Not-So-Obvious Game Day Prediction: Ryan Jones will talk smack all night long to big Joe Thorton; particularly during the PK. Joe will finally punch Jones right in the mouth after a blue paint battle and Kevin Weeks will butcher an otherwise brilliant rhyme line handed to him by his producer about Big Joe and The Flow.
