MASH

Sam Gagner's season is over. He joins Taylor Hall and Ales Hemsky on the sidelines in what has been a nightmare two weeks for the Oilers' skilled men.

  • March 3, 2011: Ales Hemsky is expected to be out for several weeks with a shoulder injury. It is believed to be a rotator cuff, but not a torn rotator. Expected injury time: 3 weeks.
  • March 4, 2011: Taylor Hall will miss the rest of the season after a high ankle sprain injury.
  • March 10, 2011: Sam Gagner gone for the season after tendon surgery.

Add that to the Dustin Penner trade, and the Oilers couldn't do a better job in the race to last place if they tried. At this point, I'm reminded of that old Hee Haw song "Blue, Despair and Agony on Me" as the Oilers and their fans are miles and miles past hopeless for this season.

Spring is on the way, and a new day will dawn with another lottery pick. Hall, Gagner and Hemsky will declare themselves fit and will join Eberle and the others next fall in the annual trek towards the Stanley. This has been a good year for 'Oilers future' with Hall, Paarjavi, Eberle and Omark all impressing up front, and Petry, Dubnyk and others showing well as rookies too.

As the snow begins to melt and we find the lineups at the car wash match those at the Tim Horton's, all of these injuries and losses will fade away. At least I hope so.

CALLUPS

The Oilers may send a call for C Ryan O'Marra after tonight's OKC Barons game, or maybe they give young Finn Teemu Hartikainen the thrill of a lifetime with his first NHL game. Colin McDonald, Brad Moran and old friend Zack Stortini are also available for recall and the team could just ride out the injuries (especially if Gilbert Brule can go).

This year is "nothing" compared to past seasons in terms of actual man games lost. The Oilers site tells us the current total is 174 for 10-11 (and counting). Ryan Whitney and Ales Hemsky have been the biggest losses for the Oildrop.

Last year, the club lost an enormous number of games (530) and the names included Ales Hemsky, Sheldon Souray, Mike Comrie, Lubomir Visnovsky, Ryan Stone, Nikolai Khabibulin and Ladislav Smid.

The Hockey Gods may want to smile on the Edmonton Oilers sometime soon.

I have been impressed with the effort of the young Oilers, but I hope this injury trend stops very soon. It is impossible to assess the team as a whole without everyone in the line up.

After the Penner trade all the Oiler's leading scorers get knocked out by injury at the 42 point mark? Since 42 is the answer to life the universe and everything, does this mean by injuring our top scorers to make us finish last that we will pick the right player with our top pick and win the Stanley cup in the near future?

Definitely a sign. So since O'Marra wears #42 in Edmonton, he should clearly get the call-up.

Say what you will about Penner, the guy was almost NEVER injured. That alone was a reason to keep him on the team.

No different than the past 3 seasons. Just SH*T LUCK!!!. Even when guys aren't playing, sitting on the bench we manage to lose players.

At least we are good at something.

Penner must be crushed that he has to deal with the pressure of a playoff race instead of missing all this fun.

That rather . . . unfortunate . . . bullfighter is pretty much the perfect mascot for this season. Here's hoping something goes right in the next two weeks--oh wait: something right this season consists of going oh-fer for the rest of the season and getting another top pick.

Can someone freeze me now and thaw me out when this team starts winning?

You've got to be good at something. My thing is sound effects!

This is ridiculous. Here I was hoping that Gagner was going to go into super nova mode and reach 55 points to end the season.

So this news begs the following questions:

1) Does Jordan Eberle end up leading his team in scoring as a rookie?

or

2) Does Jordan Eberle follow the trend and endure the next season ending injury?

Gagner's so soft he can't even handle contact on the bench.

Kidding of course. We are using up our bad luck right now so when we start winning we will be able to do so for a long time.

Lowetide, I thought Colin Macdonald was on an AHL only contract?

I would call up O'Marra just in case Brule is out yet again (knowing his luck I doubt he plays half of the games left).

So any bets on who the next Oiler to get hurt will be?

I was going to say something mean about a certain 4 million dollar a season D man, but I decided to hold my tongue!

I understand the oilers can't sign Lander to play in the ahl now that the clear day has past. But can they sign Lander to play the last nine games of the season so it won't count towards his elc but give him valuable experience going into next season. He can't be worse than Fraser and I doubt he is any worse than O'Marra...

Perhaps it is just the opposite Wanye.

If I've learned 1 thing from my Classical education it's that hubris doesn't fly with the gods.

Maybe "Exciting Last Place Hockey" was taken as a mockery by the Hockey gods.

Check up on Bellerophon, Arachne, or Niobe. It doesn't end well for them.

Bad luck? Or the twin arrows of unseen Hockey gods raining hell-fire down upon mortals who dared to challenge the will of the deities?

Just how bad is our defensive woes when we are defenceless against the injury bug as well ?

Plante looks like a bust in system with his lack of foot speed and lack of progression/development in rest of game . My opinion of him has sure changed after his short stint up here . Better hope other draftees don't take as long to develop .

So long, and thanks for all the fish!

We could so use an Electric Norseman right now (or Dan Cleary, a gem we ground down, then Detroit polished into a sweet Rock for their amazing club)

I am currently in a real existential dilemma about season ticket renewal. Awaiting arena news may influence the decision.

The in-game experience is awful, and the Oilers are letting Rexall (and everything in it) fall apart on purpose.

In other words, I can change the channel at home.
