Welcome Home, Ryan Smyth!

Lowetide
June 26 2011 10:28AM

Ryan Smyth is an Edmonton Oiler. Details of the deal (Colin Fraser and a distant 7th rd pick in 2012) are unimportant, Ryan Smyth returns!

Steve Tambellini has earned major points for a very good hockey trade. I'm not certain he thinks so, but the evidence is overwhelming. Quality NHL player, mentor, and very likely a reasonable contract next year.

I'm having a beer, and then I'm having another.

I was thinking the same thing. Not that I have anything against Sportsnet MSM personalities or their channel, but I still marvel at the massive changes they made to their website a year or two ago and how it rendered their website nearly useless, as far as quickly navigating to what you want goes. I visit their website only when I can't find information on something anywhere else... a pretty rare occasion.

I hear you. Their site is just garbage since the change. I can't stand to go there.

Dollar wise , Smyth should more than compensate for his salary with restored pride to fans , and probably more ticket and memorabilia sales for this season .

I will humbly admit that I wasn't the biggest Ryan Smyth fan when he was here. Mostly out of insecurities about having a favorite player only to watch him leave for more money (the trading of Doug Weight had broken my spirit) but also out of the fact that he wasn't flashy, wasn't the best or most notable player on the ice shift in and shift out.

When he was traded away I barely batted an eye due to still being numb from the magical ride to Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals and the dismantling that ensued. However there has been a noticeable, nay glaring lack of heart, soul, spirit and compete since he has left. The phrase you don't know what you have got until it's gone has never been more appropriate, so I say welcome back Ryan Smyth as your return will be imperative to moulding all these young future stars into "Oilers".

WELCOME HOME SMYTTY

Now Horcoff Hemsky and Smyth can play against the other teams top line. That will give the kid line (whatever they decide on being the kid line)some easier minutes.

I admit it, I am eating crow. Fraser and a 7th?!?! Well done Steve, well done indeed sir.

For all my concerns over the PR, Tambellini stuck to his guns and made a no-brainer deal but managed to give up nothing and stick some salary into the deal.

Crow tastes pretty good with a side of Ryan Smyth coming home!

Excellent price for 50ish points added to the lineup. With depth at LW for someone to move up and down as needed.

Looks like an extremely low cost, only reason Steve should be sad is if he was expecting to go hog wild with that cap space...

Which isn't that likely anyway.

Awsome, this made my day forsure. Ryan Smyth is the definition of being an Edmonton Oiler. Now, ST needs to acquire Zenon Konopka and maybe another D and lets get this season started.

Even just with Smyth the Oilers are going to have more of a real veteran presence on the team this year, and with Smyth, Horcoff and Whitney probably doing most of the heavy lifting when it comes to media relation, it will let all the young players on the team focus on playing hockey, which is nice.

And with Fraser going the other way and opening up a spot on the NHL roster for a center, we'll see in the next week or so if Tambellini plans on filling that spot with a vet or if that spot's open for competition between Hopkins and Lander.

Even though it fell into his lap, still have to give credit to Tambellini for eventually getting this one right, it's going to go quite a ways in getting fans to accept another year of the rebuild.

I think one of the funniest things about this was that Wanye had nhlnumbers.com updated to reflect the trade like 8 seconds after it was announced.

"Nope. Can't take it back now; I already updated the site. It's D-O-N-E. No need to thank me; just doing my part to ensure no one else takes a run at screwing this up."

New line up?

Smyth- Horcoff - Hemsky Hall - Gagner - Eberle Paajarvi- Cogliano - Omark Jones - Brule - Hartikainen

Wow...too many LW's 1st line...tough minutes 2nd line...pure offense vs second tier defense 3rd line...limited minutes, but good offense in proper situations 4th line...grind it towards the net, get whistle, bring out offense

Now if we could get us a Blair Betts, and maybe a Hejda on D, we'll get to that competitive stage of team development!

Well, they're strong on LW now (Hall, Smyth, MP, Jones or Hartikainen) and pretty damn good on RW (Eberle, Hemsky, Omark, Brule/Jones etc etc).

Center is still an issue, with a PK man needed. And Smyth can help the PK and PP, but you'd prefer more veteran help for the PK imo.

Forward looks good imo.

Now the blue, Steve. Now the blue.

IMO -- the only unfortunate thing is not knowing of this situation before re-signing Jones.

Hartikainen strikes me as a better value for the $$$ optiona as a 4th liner next year -- and also is a kid who -- at least -- looks like he may be able to move up in the line-up (Jones isn't).

So happy to have Smyth back. I now predict that the Hockey Gods will be kinder to us Oiler fans.

Also, now that hes back our PP should be a lot less laughable and the team actually has 3 LWs that deserve to be in the top 9. Very excited to have actual NHL players back on the team.

Fraser was a wasted spot but that also means that as it stands now the depth at C is even weaker. If the Oilers dont want RNH to earn a spot at camp then they better get somebody capable. Otherwise the lines could look like 1) Hall Horc Eberle carried over from last year 2) Smyth Gagner Hemsky 3) Paajarvi RNH Omark and 4) Jones Cogs Harti

Lines 1 & 2 could swap spots or Centres but youd have to think that thats what it looks like to start with if no other relief is provided down the middle.
