Welcome Home, Ryan Smyth!

Lowetide

Ryan Smyth is an Edmonton Oiler. Details of the deal (Colin Fraser and a distant 7th rd pick in 2012) are unimportant, Ryan Smyth returns!

Steve Tambellini has earned major points for a very good hockey trade. I'm not certain he thinks so, but the evidence is overwhelming. Quality NHL player, mentor, and very likely a reasonable contract next year.

I'm having a beer, and then I'm having another.

Does anyone think that VV has a chance to fill in on the fourth line if only as a call-up next year? His cup of coffee impressed me last year, though it was only 12 games maybe. Could VandeVelde be as mediocre as Fraser?

EDIT: VV did great in the dot in that small sample.

Welcome back to the Oilers #94! We missed ya.

Surely a move to address the 3rd/4th center position and upgrade the NHL-level defense (along with a Souray buyout) are next.

That must feel horrible. To be traded with the intention of the other team buying you out. So now you know 2 teams don't want you, every fan in the city you are leaving refers to you as "giving up nothing".

Then to top it off you turn on the TV and they can't even bother to get your name right.

Why does Oilers management not react to the problems of the team. Not drafting a defense men in the first round is huge mistake. Nugent-Hopkins is good player but his ego is bigger than his play. I like Hall and they should have built around that not bring compete for who is the better forward. They can score but they can't keep the puck out of the net. Guys like Strudwick, Vandermeer and Smid are useless and pylons. Why not go after something that will fill a noticable hole. They have two more years with cheap contracts on the kids and then look out as they will demand considerable more money, that we will have a hard time with if management doesn't wake up.

This is very insightful. I'm looking forward to more of your unabashed candid commentary. Management does need to wake up - drafting Oscar Klefbom to play Centre is preposterous.

Love your handle, btw. Another funny one is Overachieving AHL team.

The Kings were going to buy out Brule, but I'm not sure if they have to buy out Fraser. Fraser makes almost 1/3 of Brule, and can't they assign him to the AHL, where he's ready if a call up is needed?

So I know it would be a stretch, but maybe Ryan plays 1/4 of the season before injury, and Fraser gets a call up, plays on the 4th line (with real wingers), and plays well for most of the season.

Islander of the North,

What are you talking about. Two defencement drafted in the top 3 picks. Read the scouting report. Klefbom is great puckmover, his weekness is supposedly his physical game. Theve got the kid outta Prince George in the system, top level dman in Whitney when healthy, and Petry looks like hes going to be a good player. The Oilers are drafting dmen, there just not passing the sublime talents like RNH and Hall who were the BPA.

Not all great teams win with elite defencemen. Some teams have a collective group. AKA Carolina, Vancouver. It can be done...

I know eh, I love the prospects who are touted to go number 1 who say "Oh, I kinda suck. No interest in playing in defensive zone either, Ill hang around center waiting for passes and shy away from big guys".

We should draft those guys.

And it might be worth noting that RNH's stated pet peeve is "Cocky players", saying he prefers people to walk the walk. And, ya know, the upbringing hes had and all his interviews and what other people say about him... but ya, the feeling you got from him of arrogance HAS to be bang on. Even if it is, I like a first line center to think hes a top player in the league, he damn well should. (and Hall, who you said you liked, is 100x more arrogant than RNH and abit of a douche - read his twitter. But I love em)

Wow. I believe with what they have in the minors and what they got in the draft has the defensive prospects looking great on this team. Now to pick up a couple transitional defencemen to get us thru till the young "D" are ready and we will be set. Do you have anymore complaints? Good I am enjoying the fact Smytty is coming home.

P.S. Might want to rethink the RNH ego thing. I live in Wetaskiwin and Lucky me gets the choice of game to go to Oiler(when I can afford them), Oil Kings, and Rebels. RNH is a hell of a kid and humble too.

I just see the Oilers management without a vision. Don't understand why they are not filling holes. You don't win on the front...wake up. Vancouver didn't win the cup because of their collective defense. You need a stud back there (Boston=Chara)(Chicago=Seabrook and Keith). Defense takes years to build and the oilers will not be able to afford their young talent if it is not addressed soon. They are taken the wrong approach and missed the boat in this years draft. This mistake will haunt them.

FYI, the Oilers did take a defenceman in the first round, and first pick of the second. Please stop, you're embarassing yourself.

We also have quite a few rookie and prospect D-men in the system. You can't on one hand lecture us about how long defencemen take to develop and then discount Peckham et al because they aren't developed yet.

My biggest belief regarding training camp is that if youre invited you should have the right to earn a spot. So the same shot RNH should have should also be extended to Lander or VV.

However, Id have to think that if the 3rd line wingers are Omark and Paajarvi then an Offensively minded Centre might best fit the bill. If both of those guys play in the AHL to start next season they can always come back up, but once RNH is down hes down for the year.

I think my proposed lineup will be there for at least 9 games this year. Who knows after that or if injuries happen. Im very interested in how Lander looks though. Either way, our NHL or AHL teams both need the kind of leadership that Lander gets credited for by the experts.

First I must say thanks to Tambellini for working to complete trade for R.S. Next I want to say WELCOME HOME RYAN!!!!!! Then I will say that trading Fraser does open the door a bit for RNH, VV, and or Lander to get in and do what they can that Fraser never would or will. Will say bye to Fraser as he was a nice guy an all but the road to the top is first and foremost. next three days before July 1 are going to be very intriguing with UFA contracts and Souray now. Last I wish to say Congrats to RNH for becoming an Oiler and wish him very well with playing with the other kids. Wow the future now looks better each day!!!

Yeah, just wanted to say props for that lineup.

I'm not saying I agree with Hopkins being the 3rd line pivot for his first season - in terms of bang for the contract buck - but put him with 91-23 considering the other two lines and they would get all kinds of great matchups at home.

56-28 as the fourth line wingers and hopefully Reasoner as the other centre; not a 4th line guy but someone who'd keep everyone else honest.

Personally, I'd shove 19 between 91-23 and have Hopkins play one more year in junior.

Yes they dont have a true number one kid yet but there is now next year's draft to focus on a number one and then there is an option the Oilers do have. Its called trade for one..... If you knew anything about hockey you would know that you can't trade for top line centre's like many predict RNH will be and yes I realize Richards and Carter were moved but that doesn't happen everyday or every year for that matter. You can however trade for top pairing d men, Chris Pronger, Ryan Whitney, I think two examples are enough. Also, the Oilers have guys coming up, Petry, Chorney, Tuebert, Mirancin, Klefbom, and Musil. Besides Peckham is going to improve, so right now, the Oilers D may be weak, but by stockpiling picks and top end forwards a move can be made to bolster your backend when need be.
