Welcome Home, Ryan Smyth!

Lowetide
June 26 2011 10:28AM

Ryan Smyth is an Edmonton Oiler. Details of the deal (Colin Fraser and a distant 7th rd pick in 2012) are unimportant, Ryan Smyth returns!

Steve Tambellini has earned major points for a very good hockey trade. I'm not certain he thinks so, but the evidence is overwhelming. Quality NHL player, mentor, and very likely a reasonable contract next year.

I'm having a beer, and then I'm having another.

Canucks didn't win because they didn't score. I didn't see Chara lighting the lamp to tip the scales in their favor.

Surprised you came back.

The team's vision has been publicly stated for about 2 years now - build through the draft. When the prospects are starting to mature, all you need to do is add some veteran RFAs.

And do a little reading on the team, and it's prospects before you start slandering. We have some pretty good prospects on D.

Did Boston draft Chara? How about Philly? I know they haven't won, but they've been right up there (kind of like your head), and they haven't drafted any of their big name defensemen.

So have a little respect for the other fans here, and change your screen name - you can still hate for the sake of hating, that's allowed.

Or just go cheer for the 'Nucks, and leave us alone.

Sorry fellas you missed your chance. In case you forgot Edmonton is not most attractive free agent market.

And to the Creme: don't get down we still love you. Besides the original deal was a compliment, LA/Lombardi asked for you! Instead we got lucky and were able to keep a fine and kind gentleman who picks up hitchhikers (even if only because they are rockstars).

@Smokey The knock on K Bomb from some scouts is skating (some say he's quick others say slow) and his point shot. He apparently has a good wrister but weak slapper.

He is known as a physical player who has puck skills and plays both ends well. If he had a cannon and a bit better wheels he would have been up with Hamilton.

If he develops he could easily be a top pairing because he has all the tools, which is what makes a top pairing guy. I don't think the big shot is so key anymore because it is so easy to shut down. Much better to be able to pass and just get the shot off and on net like Pronger does.

I don't know if the Oil need to be drafting huge on defence. This sort of thing can be traded for. Defencemen like Seabrook and Keith don't come around often in a draft and they weren't available. Chara was drafted super late in his year and was eventually traded for in Boston. It may be better to buy/trade for a proven defenceman.

@Islanders of the North

I sounds to me like you're wanting all the holes filled immediately but we are rebuilding through the draft and there are 29 other teams. Being a 30th place team pretty much means we don't have a lot of tradable assets to use to get other team's high draft picks. That being said, free agency starts July 1st. Let's see if a hole or two can be filled then.

Wow...with the new trade the combos can be enticing a bit. Ya can have Hall Horcoff hemsky as one line then ya got Gagner Eberle and Smyth. Third line I like is Cogs with Omark and Paajarvi as they clicked well emough last year. Then ya got VV or Lander with Hartikainen and Jones as a very dependable fourth. I dont believe J.F.Jacques or Brule will be here by the end of training camp as we do need a heavy-weight tough guy who plays more than four minutes a game. That makes me sad to see Big Mac probably not here either.

ummm Who is Vancouver's #1, Who was Carolina's #1 when they won the cup, Who is Tampa's #1 or San Jose's. the fact is all these teams are very succesfull with a collective group. You don't have to have that stud defenceman to win the cup. The year the Oilers went to the final we had a stud in Pronger and Carolina had a collective group. Carolina won the cup.

The cooments are fast and furious I see about the Oilers D. To Islanders of the North. ya are not seeing that Whitney is a number two guy. Peckham is a number four guy. Klefbom is pegged as a number three guy. petry is looking like another number 2 guy. Smid is a four or five guy. Then if Foster gets back to as he was in tampa he is a number four to five guy with a hell of a shot from the point of which this year coming up I damn well hope he uses far way more. We need a super tough six guy of which would suit Big Mac great if he could skate and play great defence. Now with next years draft and the assets we have of that other teams love these last two years....we can trade up for that number one draft kid maybe....Ryan Murray.

Terrific news!! Glad to hear. I've heard great stories about Smyth mentoring the young guys and staying late at practice in LA--exactly what we need!

Plus, with Hall-Smyth-MPS-Jones on LW, we finally have *1* position that looks solid.

I am not going to miss Fraser, as he was a big disappointment last year. This just drives home the fact that we need to find another centerman to give RNH some competition come training camp (and provide defence, and win faceoffs, and and and).

I'm also glad we're keeping Brule, by the way. I like him and he's an adequate player to fill in when the injuries come (if he's healthy!), and they will come.

Uhhh...they asked for Brule because he was a throwaway player who would have been bought out. Now that honor goes to Fraser. Both those guys must feel like crap right about now.

If I were Brule I'd be looking into taking classes to finish my grade 12.

Hey Islanders of the North

How many #1 Dmen do the Canucks have? That would be ZERO. What the Canucks have is an entire defense made up of a bunch of #3's. Maybe you can argue that Hamhuis is a borderline #2 but thats it. The rest are all solid #3's but with an entire defense core of #3, you got a lot of depth and they didn't have the drop off from their top pairing like most other teams do.

They made it as far as they did based on out scoring most teams, top specially teams and strong goaltending. After all, they did win the goals against trophy did they not? They had their starting goaltender nominated for the vesina. They had the Selke winner.

They lost the cup because they couldn't score, Luongo sucked and Thomas stood on his head.

Those is a fact as well!

Whitney would be top pairing on nearly every NHL team.

Gilbert would be second pairing, and on more than a few teams top pairing.

At least learn something about the team please.

The only problem with Whitney is the same one the Canucks have with Salo.

And while we are talking Canucks, I'll bet in the way you evaluate the Oiler's D too low you overestimated Van's team too high.

I guess Boston clarified that after the Canucks started a war and got the daylights beat out of them. Once those systems broke down, it exposed a pretty average team after the top pairing and top 4 forwards.

Oiler fans could learn from the Canucks' butt whipping the dangers of running a top 6 with 4 guys under 190lbs.

I agree that we need some roster spots for new faces, but would be really surprised to see RNH make the team.

From what I saw of Hamilton last year, I think he needs some footspeed work before he's NHL ready, but you never know.

Harti and VV were impressive in their callups, and I hope they come to camp even more ready to earn a job.

I was all set to head up the #2 for prospect camp last year, but got sidetracked by work (stupid work). This year, I just might have to book it off!

Thank you Tambo. I am a huge critic of yours, but good for you.

Many years ago Gretz did an interview about the first all star game he was in with Gordie Howe. Gretz said Howe told him to keep his stick on the ice and he would get him the puck for a tap in. Gretz said the puck showed up and he tapped it in.

Fast forward. LA GM needs to dump a salary and player that would be a good fit in Edmonton. He sees his buddy Tambo struggling to add NHL roster players to help out all the kids, and the product on the ice for that matter.

So LA buddy says to Tambo, keep your stick on the ice and I will get you a tap in to help out you and your club. Tambo scores.

I agree with ya justDoit. I think RHN should get at least all of training cap games then say...five regular games to show what he can do. Junior this year with the Worlds in Alberta will still be awesome for him to have anyways. I think though that Brule should be traded if he does not look and start playing like he was pegged to be. Then a choice of trading Gagner or Cogs will have to be made too unfortunately

I think I might be high off the fumes of Smyth awesomeness, but just a thought here...

If RNH was NHL-ready...

Smyth - Horcoff - Hemsky [Smyth being the only player registered in existence to have decent chemistry with Horcoff]

Hall - RNH - Eberle

Paajarvi - Gagner - Omark

Haartikainen - Cogliano - Jones

Whitney - Petry

Gilbert - Smid

Peckham - Chorney/Teubert/Vandermeer/FA

Dubnyk - Rehabibulin

... It doesn't look that bad now, does it?

From Redline:

Klefbom is a real Red Line favorite. He's certainly the most overlooked of the top prospects, but is the best pure passer of the bunch, and his skating ranks only behind Murphy.

At the U18s he demonstrated Doughty-like agility. And he's got a hammer for a slapshot. The knock on him is hockey sense. Bit of riverboat chaos to his game, and like almost all Dmen his age, reads could be better.

This guy might end up approaching the kind of offense of a Murphy or Fowler while already being 6'3" 196 lbs.

Hemmer and Gagner have career yrs,NuHo sticks......happy days are here again!

Would prefer to see Rick Rypien in the 4th line center role. If he's cleaned up his issues, he's a much better fighter with better footspeed. Pound for pound, the toughest kid in the NHL.

An old hockey player returns!

Special teams got better today, folks!

Good riddance to Fraser and the 7th round nobody in 2012. Canada Day comes early to the City of Champions. I think we mostly agree that Tambo had to get this deal done. The fact that he was going to send Brule tells me that the Oilers will be looking to buy out his and Souray's contract in the next few days. Brule has been dead weight. Cogliano has busted his a$$ and has done what it takes to remain an Oiler. Brule has shown that he like Souray can be fragile. Easily broken and or sick. We need players here made of sterner stuff. Warriors who can take whats given and still keep standing. Cogliano has shown his mettle. He has earned his way. Brule,Fraser,Souray,Stortini,J.F.Jascques are all good to go. Strudwick has earned a retirement home in OKC for the next 3-5 years teaching the kids how to be pros. He has been a faithful soldier and offering him a position in OKC would reflect well on this organization. McIntyre deserves the same as Struds. Sign him to a nice AHL contract and let him ensure that the kids are going to be in one piece when they come to the big show. Bring him up when you need a show of force. But otherwise let him earn a decent paycheque in OKC. Smyth. Good for him. The feel good story of the summer. Tambo has earned some respect for doing something he was forced to do but doing it in a way that benefited both the team and Smyth.Great job Tambo. Perfect end to a graet weekend.

My only question towards your line-up projections....along with the defence positions.... Do we lack fighting toughness enough against some teams with dirty type to tough type players like taht of Vancouver, Anaheim, Pittsburgh (with Matt Cooke), the Rangers with Avery... etc?

Great Day! The Mullet curse has finally been lifted! Immediately strip Horcoff of the C and give it to Smytty. I'm dead serious by the way. Horcoff got the C by default (just like his #1 center position) but now we have a true Captain.

Saying that, with Hemmer and Smytty on his line, Horcoff should be able to notch a few more goals one would think.

To the mentally challenged Canuck fan who's team is entering their 41st season in franchise history- with a grand total of 0 Cups- take care of your own backyard before digging up ours. Bieksa, Salo, and Ehrhoff are UFAs in a weeks time. Not a chance your defense is as good next season. Maybe the 4+million dollar healthy scratch Ballard will be your saviour?? Keep up the diving and whining in VanCity...all you've done is embarrass our great nation as poor losers. So much to be proud of on the coast!

So what about signing Huddy to work with all these young D men. He was released by Dallas.
