JETSNATION.CA LAUNCHES, SMYTH OMEN SIGHTING

Wanye
July 11 2011 03:17PM

Some little kids have that special X factor that leave you saying "yep, that kid is gonna go somewhere someday." Take this little fella dancing his heart out to MJ at Safeco Field. Even though he is six years old - or thirty - we have no kids so can't tell how old they are unless we cut them in half and count their rings - he is already a champ.

Same goes for the newest member of the Nation Network - JetsNation. Even though it is only hours old we expect great things from the kid. Terrible, evil, wonderful things. It certainly is an exciting time to be born in Winnipeg.

It's exciting that Canada has a brand new ice hockey squadron! It's exciting that Winnipeg got their team back 16 years after they lost their team! It's exciting that the team is called the Jets even though NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman would rather have named them the "Winnipeg NHL-Failed-In-The-Sunbelt" rather than the Winnipeg Jets.

Sometimes things work out don't they?

FOR NOW

For now, we are happy to see Winnipeg back in the league. As an Oilers fan, 1995-1998 represented years of ulcer causing stress as the Oilers seemed to be the next team going South after the Jets departed for Phoenix. Long before the EIG took control and saved the day, a teenaged Wanye had many sleepless nights that the team would be leaving.

We were fortunate to dodge the ball at the last minute whereas Winnipegers took it square in the beans and have been smarting from the shot ever since. Anyone who cheers for a Canadian team or a small market team or can identify with hard core fans watching their team pack up and leave town should be able to find some small part of their heart that will soar with joy once the puck drops in the 'Peg this fall.

Yes, with the Jets tucked safely in the Eastern Conference we are cheering for them. For now. But once they come back in the West all love ends and the all consuming hatred of every other team in the NHL begins. The Oil have finished back to back lasts. Hatred is all we have.

IN THE MEANTIME

Swing by JetsNation and wish Winnipegers and Jets fans all the best. Or the worst.

Or whatever.

MORE SMYTH OMENS

Ever since it was announced that Hometown Hero Ryan Smyth had been repatriated back to Canada and specifically Edmonton where he belongs things have taken a turn for the better. All Oilers fans are walking with a spring in their step, the Esks seem to be a completely different team and late night booty calls are up a solid 12%*

We wrote a piece about a Citizen of the Nation getting a $94.94 on the gas pump the other day and encouraged other Smyth omen sightings to be sent in to WanyeMail. Our buddy Taylor took a well timed pic of a beauty license plate that can only be described as "a Ryan Smyth license plate if there ever was one."

Spooky.

If you see any other Smyth omens around send them to your ol' pal Wanye at wanyegretz@gmail.com.

Or whatever.

Lawl @ ring counting. Wanye, you so crazy!

With the return of Ryan Smyth and the Jets, it feels like the balance of power in the hockey universe is finally starting to shift back towards Canada.

The time for the Oil to win the cup will soon be at hand!

@OilerLand

The Oil are preping and analysing for complete Hockey domination for years to come. They will all bow before us and if not we will kill the engines of thier buses lock the doors to the area and let them freeze their asses off. Welcome to Edmonton, have a good time. Oh and that frost bite isn't a bad thing, its just a little momento to remind you of Edm, can't wait for you to come back. ;)

There. I made a post. Suggested they should trade Kane for Khabibulin because they are thin in net. That way if anyone calls me an idiot, then I know they are a jets fan. :-)

wouldnt it be UBER COOL if the Oilers AND the jets made it to the finals this year, then we could all laugh at bettman and say "good things can come out of something you failed at"

Oilers would take the cup anyway and all would be right again

I took a pic of an RNH 933 license plate from here in Red Deer a couple days ago. They even had Rebels stickers on the back of their window.

Will have to post it on twitter when I get around to it.

Great to see Jets Nation up and running, but you never clarified "up a solid 12%*" at the end of the article...

Speaking of this, why is the ON link SECOND IN LINE up there at the top, preceded by the g*d d*mn Canucks link? WHY???

I find the oversight almost too much to bear.

Not to mention, why are they the "Army"???? Shouldn't Canucks fans tow the line? It is not like they have any real pull around the league... that is reserved for teams with at least 1 Stanley Cup!

Here's the link. http://oilers.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=569106&navid=DL|EDM|home

Can't believe they turned a 25th pick into a mid level second rounder.

@Petr's Jofa

I cant believe they turned Lupul and Smith into Jim Vandermeer and eventually nothing.

True dat.

I just always thought Cogliano was going to be a throw in to sweeten any deal that brought a defenseman to Edmonton.

Well, now Tambo's only has 49 contacts.

Do Gagner and two 2013 2nd rounders get you a top pairing Dman?

@Ball Buster

Doubt it. But it sure would get rid of one of the best players on the team under 25 plus 2 more pieces of the rebuilding puzzle.

Sweet!

Some might argue any move Tambo has made in the last couple of years got us Hall, Eberle and the Nuge.

@Matt Henderson

Okay. Sure.

You don't honestly think that they'll hold onto that second pick? Lowe said as much after this year's draft that they weren't going to be as protective with their picks going forward.

I think Gagner is on the way out and one or two of those picks goes with him. I have to go now. My crystal ball needs recharging.

this year is make it or break it for Gagner...he has to take his game to the next level and prove he can be a second line centre on an elite team

otherwise he is out of here next deadline
