I THINK THE LINGO IS "BOOK IT"

Robin Brownlee

Edmonton Oilers president of hockey operations Kevin Lowe had a chance Thursday to throw a big bucket of cold water on suggestions his team might make a "wow" move once the NHL lockout is over. Instead, he brought a gas can.

Lowe appeared on Oilers Now on 630 CHED with host Bob Stauffer, who created a buzz in recent days with his suggestion the Oilers were poised to make a noteworthy player acquisition, in large part because of the depth of young talent they've amassed during six years out of the playoffs.

Lowe did nothing do dismiss Stauffer's contention – one that was dismissed and ridiculed in some corners as guessing and blatant speculation on the part of the always opinionated Stauffer. If anything, Lowe's take from the top on his team's organizational depth and the possibilities that come along with it was very much along the same lines.

FROM THE BOSS

"You’re going into a game with lots of trump cards," Lowe said. "That’s the only way you can make deals is if you have assets that are attractive to other teams. When you have assets then you can make deals.

"So, absolutely, we’re at some point, whenever that is, we’re probably not too far down the road, we’re going to have to make some tough choices and maybe move some players, or a player, draft picks, to get a piece or two that finishes off the formation of what you feel is a championship team.

"I mean, we need to get to the playoffs first, so you can’t put the cart ahead of the horse, but no question. I don’t talk to managers on a regular basis any more, that’s (GM) Steve Tambellini’s job, but I do know from my past experiences that we won’t have a tough job selling anybody on anybody that we have in the event we’re interested in a player on another team.”

For full context and the entire interview you can go here, but like I said when Stauffer began hinting something could be coming down the pipe once the NHL actually gets back to playing hockey, don't be surprised if Lowe and Tambellini get busy. Wow? Stay tuned.

Listen to Robin Brownlee Wednesdays and Thursdays from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. on the Jason Gregor Show on TEAM 1260.

Let's see, if Stauffer was "spoon-fed," the reference suggests he's getting information from someone in the know or who is part of the decision-making process, no?

If that's the case, the information would likely be pretty accurate. So, you don't want information about a possible player move that is likely accurate because . . . why?

Now I need to worry about how they are gonna mess this whole thing up even worse. Lord knows whoever is on the way out will definitely end up a perrenial all-star based solely on the luck of every Oilers fan on the planet.

Just dont mess it up. Thats all I ask.

I do pray for the love of god, that they don't go chasing after another Dany Heatly type player, I think that we should continuie to let Stu find the players in the draft, sign the right UFA once in a while.

Ya gotta love some Oilers fans who think they have a god given right to know everything about the team as much as they do about senior health officials racking up the bills at Jack's Grill.

And then when they DO get something of value they get all girly because an employee of the team broke the news.

Whut?

I mean, I understand not agreeing with his points of view, or even (to a much lesser degree) the fact that he is basically just a mouthpiece for the franchise, but my god man, how many more times does he have to keep nailing these things (regardless of the fact that he's got an inside line) before some of these fartbags concede that at the very least he's a good source of information?

Some of you should probably go back to spending hours a day in front of the mirror practising yelling "SHHHHHHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOTTTTTTTTTTTTT" every time an Oiler comes within 10 feet of the puck on the powerplay.

I don't think a name (or ego) as big as Heatley is in the cards, but a mix of secondary prospects and a pick could land an established D-man, a proven top-nine forward or a goaltender.

Hi folks, longtime reader, first-time poster.

On his radio show Stauffer paused for a long time when he was asked if it might be an offer sheet.

How about Michael Del Zotto? 22-year-old RFA, more points than any other D on the Rangers last season, and apparently Sather has offered 2.5 mil, take it or leave it. Word is that the two parties are not close on a deal.

Now go back and listen to the podcast of what Stauffer said on Oct. 30 and try to tell me you don't agree.

Stealing Del Zotto out from under Sather's nose is most definitely a "wow" deal that will "make for some entertaining discussion" around these parts.

I say absolutely.

In 13 GP a just turned 19 yr old Yakupov has in what is the best league in the world right now.

10 goals! Of which 7 are at even strength, another 3 on the PP is averaging a point per game while averaging only 15 minutes a night and has a mind blowing 57 shots on net!

Yakupov WILL out score the big 3 as you put it, and you can see the Oilers addressing a need by getting rid of another desperate need?

Klowe or Tambellinni should be fired on the spot for considering this.

The Oilers are marginally better this year than last. The chance of the Oilers remaining at or close to a lottery position is inevitable. So again, why trade for a need when one will be presented to you for free?

Even if the Oilers and the NHL don’t play this year and the draft gets scrambled you have Musil and Klefbom along with Schultz coming next year? Why on earth would you trade an elite goal scorer for a defenseman that you possible already have in the system?

I’m sorry, but the Oilers have serious holes to fill before we go out and get these whales!

Think center depth (the hardest to obtain) think gritty bottom six players that can play and of course the easier to obtain defensemen. Furthermore there is the UFA market! With the NHL not playing the Oilers can take a shot at a number of players without having to lose any players!

Sorry, but I think Bob and old Klowe are just trying to get the fans focused on something positive, no bad intentions just deflecting some negativity of late which is never a bad thing.

All I know is if the season is lost we're in pretty good shape as it stands right now for next year.

Some older players may not return and the youngins' on the farm are being watered and fertilized.

The league make-up may change in terms of who would be available.

Interesting times if it happens.

I agree. The only thing I could see them really going after is a goalie as their defence has the potential to be really good if Whitney can return to form and the, Petry and Smid continue improving, and the Schultzes play well, you have a solid top five. Add Klefbom to that group next year and you have a great mix of veterans and youth that can play with anybody.

Everyone else on HF and other sites claim to have inside info through a friend of his cousin's girlfriend's stepdad. We jump all over these guys and they are accused of speculating and fabricating. We criticize Tambi for being secretive and non-communicative with the fans.

So now we're criticizing a guy who can be verified as having inside knowledge (how many of us can get KLowe to sit and chat for an hour?) AND sharing that knowledge with us. I'm no fan of Bob's and when he started going on about how Katz is the anti-Pocklington, I threw up a little and changed the station to 1260. His butt kissing the boss really knows no bounds but his info is good.

I dont have an issue with the idea of making a major roster move, Im just not sold on the guy who would be given the green light to do it. Never thought of myself as naive before, but I really thought there would be somebody else in place by the time we were ready to shake the roster. Sorry Tambo...I only trust you enough to not screw up in the hoarding of talent. I seriously thought you were hired because Lowe was too embarrassed to step up to the podium the last few years. Odd how doing exactly what he was brought in for is also the reason I cant put my faith in him. Please dont mess this up which can also be roughly translated as please dont trade for Luongo. Im more sold on Dubnyk than I am on either Tambo or Lowe

When the new CBA does get figured out; the entire NHL landscape will be so different, that at this time it is impossible to speculate about the availability if players. Why in gods name would any sane person, or manager, negotiate a deal now when better ingredients, and lower prices will be available down the road? What will the Oil look like in a years time without a deal? Which deals with one year left will be history, and which prospects, that we already have, will fill those holes? To me, the sheer volume of variables present before the new CBA is signed, make discussing a hockey deal ludicrous, and serve only to distract ppl from the fact we should be angry with the ppl in charge of the NHL/NHLPA for canceling the season, failing to compromise, trating fans like the retards that we are, and in the case of the Oilers, screwing around with the arena issue. Come on.......let's get a grip!!!

I like the idea of a trade for Del Zotto or for his rights. But I don't like the idea of taking on Redden's salary. The buy out would hamper the Oilers' ability to manage its cap over the next few years, especially if the cap ceilings are reduced as expected.

I think an offer sheet for Del Zotto would be a mistake as they seldom work, cost too much and affect relationships between teams.

I agree with the posters who are nervous about this news. As pleased as I am with how the future is beginning to look, it would be a very easy thing to screw up.

From my perspective, given what we have to offer up, I would hope the kind of trade that may happen is something along the lines of getting a couple of wingers like the Foligno brothers to play up front with the big 4.

They would be a bit cheaper than "marquee" names, and the grit and toughness on the top 2 lines would put them over the top. Especially if Hall does end up at center.

In my opinion, yeah this could happen, but it's more about creating a little buzz in a market whose fans are being beaten down by the double-whammy of the lockout and a bit of a shadowy (shady, some would say) owner who can't agree to a sweetheart deal with the City of Edmonton on an arena.

Stauffer needed fodder for his show, plain and simple. Sure, the Oilers will likely deal when the time is right, but why talk about it until a new CBA is in place and the league is actually operating?

I can't wait to see what actually passes as NHL hockey news when Bettman & the owners get their wish and kill the league once again.

Relax, not much happening until the CBA is sorted out. There wont be any deals till the Upper and Lower Caps are in place. At that point there might be some movement. Also , forget Weber types, he was paid a zillion dollars up front . However, some mid/secondary players in that might be in the $4 million range might be in play.

Does the fact Kevin Lowe went on radio and seemed to fan the flames of this rumour not make it likely that this was a leak designed more to get Daryl Katz's name out of the headlines more than a legit trade rumor?

If Bob had caught wind of a trade being in place, you'd think if anything, Lowe would be denying it so a potential deal didn't fall apart after the names were made public which we know has happened before.

I couldn't remember which one was the centre. I really think it will be getzlaf but I don't think it will take gagner to get it done. He is a Ufa at the end of the year and if he is going to be traded he has already informed the team he will not resign. We will bring him in cheap ( pajaarvi and omark or something like that) and gagner will be dealt for a defensemen. Just my two cents. I actually feel sorry for Anaheim somebody is really screwing that team up.

What's the team's priority at present? Goal, defence, or centres?

We definitely need higher quality defencemen (at least one, if not two) and likely would have to do a "Pronger" style 3 for 1 trade to clear out the surplus we have at that position. We also need a consistent second line centre (notwithstanding Gagner's potential development, but assuming RNH is at #1, Horc stays at #3, and Belanger performs at #4), and a reliable/veteran goalie (either to carry the mail or as insurance if Dubnyk doesn't perform).

I can't imagine the team going for someone like Luongo without also either buying out Khabibulin and/or shipping out Dubnyk because Luo isn't going to waive a NTC just to come to Edmonton and share the crease with DD. That's why I question the "Luongo to Edmonton" rumours because it's going to force the team to part with one or both of Khabibulin and Dubnyk, but who knows-- maybe the plan is to trade for Luongo, ditch Khabibulin, put up with a ticked off Dubnyk for a season and a half and then move him to make room for Bunz or Roy as backup in 2014-15.
