TUESDAY TRIVIA... ANSWERS ADDED

While the NHLPA conducts the longest voting process in the history of sports lockouts, unofficially of course, let's take a break from the exciting chatter about disclaimer of interest, make whole, anti-trust and the other riveting hockey topics we've been educated on the past weeks.

Today we'll have a quick round of Tuesday trivia.

I will warn you that this isn't easy trivia. I'm sure some of you will know the answers, but likely not all of them.

I've spent the last few days reading Next Goal Wins by Liam Maguire, one of the best hockey historians the game has ever seen. Maguire is a trivia guru and an excellent historian and many of these questions came from his book. If you are a hockey historian or trivia buff I highly recommend picking up this book.

I will put the answers in after 6 p.m. MST....Feel free to look them up, but many of these will be hard to find. Good luck.

1. Who had the first NHL fighting major for the Edmonton Oilers?

Kevin Lowe was the Oilers first draft pick, scored their first goal and had their first fight. He fought Grant Mulvey.

2. Who was the first American-born player to play 1,000 regular season games?

Gordie Roberts was the first American to play 1000 games.

3. Who was the first goalie to record a point in an NHL all-star game?

Arturs Irbe assisted on Teemu Selanne's goal.

4. Five players in NHL history have scored their first NHL goal on a penalty shot. Can you name the most recent player to do it? ( He scored it on Nikolai Khabibulin)

St. Louis forward Jay McClement scored his first NHL goal on a penalty shot on October 11th, 2005 v. Chicago.

5. Six goalies have recorded playoff shutouts with three different teams? Lorne Chabot and John Roach did it in the 1930s. Name the four who have done after the league expanded to 21 teams?

Curtis Joseph, Grant Fuhr and John Vanbiesbrouck and Mike Vernon were the others.

6. Who was the last player to play an entire NHL season and not draw a single penalty?   Hint: He also scored the first playoff goal for a franchise.

Craig Ramsey in 1973/1974 played all 78 game for the Sabres without taking a penalty. He also scored the first post-season goal for Buffalo in 1973.

7. Which Hartford Whaler defenceman became the first D-man to score two shorthanded goals in the same game?

Mark Howe scored two SH goals in an 8-6 loss to St.Louis on October 9th, 1980.

8. Can you name the only player to wear #0 in the last 70 years? Again he played for the Whalers. What an embarrassment for such a great franchise..haha.

Neil Sheehy wore 0 during 26 games in 1988. The only other player to wear that number was goaltender Paul Bibeault, he4 wore it with the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 1940s.

9. Outside of Wayne Gretzky can you name the only other player in NHL history to score 50 goals before his 20th birthday?

Jimmy Carson was 19 years and 8 months when he scored his 50th on March 26th, 1988. Steven Stamkos was 20 years two months old when he scored his 50th in 2009/2010.

10. Name the two players who scored 50 goals in 50 games played or less, but aren't officially recognized in the NHL rules books. They aren't recognized because they missed a few games due to injury, and the NHL only recognizes the team's games played.

In 1993/1994 Cam Neely scored 50 goals in 44 games, but it was Boston's 66th game of the season. In 1992/1993 Alex Mogilny scored his 50th goal in his 46th game but it was the Sabres' 53rd game of the year.

11. Name the seven players who scored 100 points in their rookie season?

Teemu Selanne 132, Peter Stastny 109, Alex Ovechkin 106, Dale Hawerchuk 103, Sidney Crosby 102, Joe Juneau 102, Mario Lemieux 100.

12. Can you name the lowest draft choice to ever be named captain of an NHL team?

Dave Taylor was drafted  in the 15th round, 210th overall in 1975.

13. Name the only player to score three OT goals in one playoff series? His heroics earned him the nickname "Sudden Death."

Mel Hill scored three OT winners for the Boston Bruins in 1939 in the Stanley Cup final v. the Toronto Maple Leafs.

14. What is the only season no Canadian team qualified for the playoffs?

In 1970 the Maple Leafs and Canadiens both missed the playoffs.

15. Every Leaf fan talks about Gretzky getting away with a high-stick v. the Leafs in game six of the semi-finals. In that same game which Maple Leaf got away with a blatant head butt?

Doug Gilmour head-butted Marty McSorley but there was no penalty on the play.

16. Who was the last NHL D-man to record a hat-trick in the playoffs?

Andy Delmore scored three goals v. the Penguins in game three of the 2nd round. The other D-men to register a playoff hat-trick are: Art Duncan, George Boucher, Bobby Orr, Dick Redmond, Denis Potvin, Doug Halward, Paul Reinhart, Al Iafrate, Gary Suter, Brian Leetch and Eric Desjardins.

This is just a tease of what you'll find in McGuire's book. It is a great read if you love the history of hockey.

I'm done. This league is a joke, and I can't in good conscience contribute to their staggering profits should they return to the ice. I may turn cable back on for the playoffs (if...), but until then, they can kiss my hairy, yellow @ss.

Thanks - I found the Brett Callighen error, he had the first fight at home.

I question the Irbe stat though, seems like a lot of high scoring games happened prior to that and its hard to believe that no goalie got a single point prior.
