OILERS WIN!

We know now where Edmonton will pick in the 2012 draft (barring trade). Winning the lottery creates all kinds of options. Who is the best prospect available? What's out there? Where do Edmonton's picks come from? Who are the important men in the amateur procurement department?

Stu MacGregor is the Oilers scouting director. His team consists of several men who contribute but rarely get a mention. Leading up to the draft last season, the Oilers published their scouts names and areas they cover. Since it doesn’t happen often, I wanted to take the time to post it so we can know the names of the men doing all this good work.
- Bill Dandy: QMJHL
- Brad Davis: OHL, tier 2 leagues in Q and O
- Kent Hawley: OHL, QMJHL, tier 2 leagues in Q and O
- Bob Brown: WHL, tier 2 leagues, USHL
- Jim Crosson: WHL, tier 2 leagues, USHL
- Scott Harlow: NCAA and American junior leagues (east coast)
- Frank Musil: Europe
- Pelle Eklund: Europe
- Robert Nordmark: Europe
- Stu MacGregor: WHL, cross checks the world
I believe the list to be correct along with their areas of coverage. We do know that the Oilers like to get their scouts in front of the top candidates and that MacGregor will have seen these players multiple times.
OILERS DRAFT TRENDS-SOME REAL LOOKERS!

Stu MacGregor--since becoming scouting director before the 2008 draft--has changed the Oilers' draft may. He is using precious early picks on Swedes. Since taking over in 2008, two first round picks, one 2nd rder and a fourth round selection have been used on Swedish prospects. For the record, this is where Stu's team shops at the entry draft:
- WHL: 10 (most recent: RNH, Musil, Ewanyk)
- Sweden: 4 (most recent: Klefbom)
- Finland: 4 (most recent: Perhonen and Tuohimaa)
- QMJHL: 3 (most recent Jeremie Blain)
- OHL: 3 (most recent: Tobias Rieder)
- BCJHL: 2 (most recent: Kellen Jones)
- NCAA: 2 (most recent: Dillon Simpson)
- Slovakia: 2 (most recent: Martin Gernat)
- Belarus: 1 (most recent: Kristians Pelss)
- USHS: 1 (most recent: Troy Hesketh)
WHL represents 31% and the entire CHL accounts for 50% of the selections. Sweden and Finland are CHL east and 25% of the selections come from those two countries. Three quarters of the MBS era picks come from the CHL and Swe/Fin. Add the two BCJHL selections into the group and there’s a pattern forming after 4 seasons of this drafting team.
Reading the tea leaves, there’s a good chance that the WHL, OHL, QMJHL, Sweden, Finland and tier 2 junior (BCJHL, AJHL, USHL, etc) will be hotbeds for the Oilers.
An interesting scenario exists with regard to Russians. Edmonton has steered clear since 2008 but that may change with two CHL draft eligibles from the Motherland. Nail Yakupov and Milhail Grigorenko are outstanding young talents and should go at or near the top of the draft.
After winning the lottery tonight, Edmonton's choices are threefold: take the BPA (Yakupov), trade the pick or select someone #1 overall who is not the best player available.
Early thoughts: take the Russian, don't look back.
Bob McKenzie's top 10
- NAIL YAKUPOV
- MIKHAIL GRIGORENKO
- RYAN MURRAY
- FILIP FORSBERG
- MATT DUMBA
- ALEX GALCHENYUK
- JACOB TROUBA
- GRIFFIN REINHART
- MORGAN REILLY
- RADEK FAKSA
- TEUVO TERAVAINEN
Nail Yakupov lays it all out about Team Canada after Russia beats them 6-5 in the 2012 World Junior Hockey Championships in Calgary
.
Kid loves to win and has ridiculous skill. Hall-Eberle, Nuge-Nail? Lordy.
Next up: NHL equivalencies.
Tird fist?!?!
First Overall! Didn't see that coming at all!
First Overall! Didn't see that coming at all!
Pick the Russian and let the kids play... wow am I ever happy!
Tambis future as the builder of this team depends heavily on what he does this off season. (I assume he is here that long)
I don't know whether to laugh or cry.
@kdunbar
We had some horshoes hidden today!!!!!!!Pick Nail and trade Hemmer for a Dman.
This is an insanely good day for the Oilers. Absolute manna from heaven. Holy crap! FIND A GIRL AND KISS HER!
The draft simulator on the oilers site went 3 for 5 Edmonton, did it know something?
Can Yakupov play LW good though?
Yay, here comes Nail!
Sweeeeet!!
Make the best deal possible, whoever our GM on draft day is, and if nobody bites, take Grigorenko.
This saves us from a bad #2/3 pick for a defenseman. At worst, we trade down for that pick and add another asset or two.
And what happens with Gagner, need a little more size in that top six. Variety allows teams to adjust and win more often.
He almost scored 50 goals in his 16 year old season... So yeah, he is pretty damn decent.
Definitely take Yakupov please!
Next year Oilers again will be in the lottery.
Time for Taylor Hall to play Center.
L1= X-RNH-Eberle L2 MPS-Hall-Yakupov
I'd consider trading #1 for #3 + PK Subban
Does a team with a top 6 of ebs, hall, nuge, hemmer, gags and nail have the ability to lure a schultz and suter?
Lowetide, no doubt, this was a shocker, the odds were stacked against us. Would you pick Nail?
Hey Cowtown ! Bet that just pees you off even more huh ? Wanna trade for our first overall pick ?? Nah you dont have dick all we want.. Not even that Sven dude...
He's listed as a RW though. And not all RW are good LW.
You got to build a team thats why Team Canada is not an all-star team.
I don't trust the driver of the Bus.
Have to go BPA. Oilers will need to add a defender via trade, there's just no way to pass on this kid unless the overpay is a monster.
Wow. Lordy.
Do both, Laugh at the Flames and Cry for them.
At least there should be no way we take Grigorenko. That would have been useless.
Sign Schultz and see if Suter is now Interested.
Pretty funny these Oiler fans so excited . Guess what your still a bad team.
Don't forget that
Oh, Johns. Don't be sad.
no way you take suban and montreals 3rd for the 1st, Nail for sure is worth it.
The Oilers top 6 will have ridiculous skill. RNH-Eberle-Hall and Gagner-Hemsky-Yakupov.
Wow.
must be a Calgary fan...LOL
Since 2006 Oilers have been bad, getting another small forward ain't going to change that LT.
What does Gagner have to do with drafting a winger. Lets not make this about him. We have 6 top 6 forwards for the first time in a long time, all under 23 and 5 of 6 drafted in the top ten. Lets not talk about trading one.
Maybe Suter will come here now, sounds like schultz wants too. What can we get for hemsky omark and a pick package in terms of a D
If Yakupov is here... that would put Hemsky on the trade block would it not?
STFU LOSER.

I'm a Habs fan and the Oilers are my "mistress team" in the West. So as much as I want the Oilers to succeed, I say that no way the Habs trade Subban for Edmonton's #1. Not that they wouldn't be willing to trade for the top pick somehow, but Subban isn't going anywhere. As good as Yakupov will likely be, I can't see the Habs trading a D-man that they already rely on so much and who's only 22 years old. He averaged about 25 minutes a game this season (which is insane!) and that would be a tough void to fill next year if they trade him away.
If the Oilers take Yakupov, we will have 3 top 6 right wingers ( Eberle, Yakupov, Hemsky). 1 too many.
Can one of those guys switch to left wing?
If we decide to make a trade do we get a better return for Hemsky or Yakupov?
A fantasy trade talk i had with a friend went like this:
Select Yakupov. Trade Gagner/Omark/Peckham for a decent D (maybe a schultz type) and grab Penner again for 1 year to be the big center between hemsky ad Yakupov. (one will play left wing).
Top 6 would be: Hall, Nuge, Eberle yakupov, Penner, Hemsky
I name penner because he would probably come cheap after his bad run with LA, but really a big guy to win face offs and plant his arse infront of the net will do.
The alternative is to take Yak and trade Hemsky, but his value isnt good enough yet after this BAD season.
Hmm what to do!?!?
@Overpaid Wild
It is about getting some more size in the top six without giving up Hamsky, HaLl, Ebs, RNH, and Yakupov
A-Mc: I don't think you worry about it. Bring Yakupov in and if he's good enough at RW then look at options.
worst case scenario you have three lines and each of them boasts an outstanding RW. Plus of course injuries remain a factor.
CQYEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE*
*SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE in Russian**
**really
Well Hemsky is is the lightest out off all the forwards you listed and also the oldest and makes the most and produced the least. There should be no worries on trading him now.
RNH will put on size and be a fine size in years to come. Hall will be bigger than average.
Grit will come with age. Oh and look at Marchand Grit doesnt always need size.
For the love of all things Oil do not trade the number one pick.
Take the player head and shoulders above the rest in his draft year.
Then trade some extra redundant parts.Such as Hemsky, Gagner,Omark.Maybe even MPS, Perhaps the 30th pick for a top pairing d-man.Then every one on defence drops back a spot.If that does not work out trade the same pieces to get another pick earlier in the first round and draft a d-man there.
Try and Grab Shultz and away they go.
Time to make some tough decisions and build a team .Not just draft #1 every year. That means toughness and grit on the bottom 6 a defence and a goalie to push Dubnyk.
End the suffering and fight for the playoffs next season.
Would Gags and Hemmer be enough to get you a top 5 pick. Don't carve me too hard.
The first and Hemsky to the jackets for Nash and #2
Maybe if you threw in the 30th pick too. Then got another player say a defencemen back.
Alright then... now we're talking.
I've seen Yakupov listed as both RW and LW, and he shoots left. I doubt it will be an issue whatsover.
Make him an Oiler now please. No debate necessary.
I hit it 10 times yesterday and got the oil once. Now this team looks even more enticing for the UFA Shea Webbers of the world.Eat your heart out canuck fans.
BOOM GOES THE DYNAMITE!!!!!!!!!
Hey Columbus, http://i0.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/original/000/029/367/shipment-of-fail.jpg?1318992465
Tambo is a rabbit foot for draft picks, he'll get 2 years for that.
OMG????? WE ARE GETTING THE ONE PLAYER THAT IS HEAD AND SHOULDERS ABOVE EVERYONE ELSE AND LAUGHING AT COLUMBUS ANDDDDD PEOPLE ARE TRADING AWAY PLAYERS ALREADY???
WHEN IS DEPTH A BAD THING?
OMG......you caps lock is stuck.Might want to take a look at that.
how are hemsky, gagner and even paajarvi redundant parts? Maybe expendable but not redundant. Secondary scoring is a requirement people.
We need to use picks, omark and maybe hemsky to get the dman.
If magnus can turn the corner we have HALL, MPS, - RNH, GAGS, - EBS, YAK. Why not go with that top six.
Start developing the Hamiltons, Pitlicks, Hrtikainen, and Landers for our third Line
Any little addition or possible addition results in people saying to trade Gagner. Maybe we do, maybe we dont.
@steelymac
Weber isn't a free agent until after next season but I think they should talk to him after this year (RFA) and let him know they are very interested in signing him when he's UFA.
