GDB 03: A KING SIZE CHALLENGE

Jason Gregor
January 24 2013 01:20PM

After facing the heaviest team in the NHL on Tuesday the Oilers face the 2nd heaviest team tonight. The LA Kings average weight is 210 pounds, and the only forwards shorter than 6'1" are Dustin Brown, 6'0", while Mike Richards and Brad Richardson stand 5'11". Richards and Brown are two of their most physical forwards, so the Oilers need to be ready to compete.

Tonight will be a great test to see how they bounce back from a disastrous first period against the Sharks.

The defending Stanley Cup champions are 0-2 while the Oilers want to erase Tuesday's debacle as quick as possible. Both teams admitted they will be in a sour mood this evening.

"We are a pretty pissed-off team right now. We don't have a win. We need one. I expect they will be mad too," said Jarret Stoll on my radio show yesterday. The Kings have yet to score a PP goal, and Stoll hinted they are more angry than worried at this point.

"We haven't played a full game yet. We were very good for the first two periods in Colorado, but we gave up a lead in the third, which was very uncharacteristic for our club. We can't afford to fall too far behind in the standings in such a short season, and I expect we will be much better and more intense on Thursday," Stoll continued.

The Oilers were singing the same tune.

"We didn't play very smart. We had lots of energy on Tuesday, but we let it control us. We all have to play better, especially early in the game and I'm looking forward to getting off to a good start," said Devan Dubnyk.

Dubnyk didn't seem rattled at all after a tough first period v. San Jose. I sensed he was more looking forward to bouncing back, rather than worrying about how he and the team played on Tuesday.

LINE UP CHANGES

Hall-RNH-Eberle
Yakupov-Gagner-Hemsky
Smyth-Horcoff-Paajarvi
Hartikainen-Belanger-Petrell

Teemu Hartikainen and Magnus Paajarvi will switch lines and wings. Krueger wants some speed with Horcoff and Smyth and he is looking for Hartikainen to be more physical on the fourth line.

Smid-Petry
N.Schultz- J.Schultz
Fistric-Whitney

Mark Fistric will play his first game as an Oiler and he'll be paired up with Ryan Whitney. Firstric will line up on the left side, because he's more comfortable there, but if he and Whitney switch sides during the play they won't worry switching back right away.

Krueger said Fistric is a "specialist", and he expects him to help the PK and then add some physical presence to the lineup.

Dubnyk
Danis

QUICK HITS

  • Ben Eager has a concussion and is out indefinitely. It is unclear how long he'll be out, but Steve Tambellini might have to find another forward who can play physical, because right now the Oilers don't have many bangers in the lineup.

  • Krueger suggested the Oilers will make a decision on Theo Peckham tonight. I expect he'll go down to OKC on a two-week conditioning stint. The Oilers will want to send a message to him and the rest of the team that it is unacceptable to show up in camp not in tip-top shape.

  • Nikolai Khabibulin is getting closer to playing. Krueger suggested it isn't weeks anymore. I wonder if you will see Khabibulin next Thursday when the Oilers play back-to-back on Wednesday and Thursday?

  • Every Oiler I spoke with said basically the same thing regarding their discipline. They have to watch their sticks and not be too aggressive with them in the first ten minutes.

  • The Kings are 0 for 11 on the PP thus far. They are due to break out, so the Oilers need to play smart. The Oilers' PP is clicking at 33%, 3 for 9, and they'd really help their cause if they could force the Kings to take some penalties early in the game.

  • Detroit has the worst special teams in the NHL. They are 0 for 15 on the PP, and they've allowed 6 goals on 14 PK opportunities. It is early, but the Wings are a shadow of the team we've seen during the past two decades.

  • The Oilers only have five right-handed shots in the lineup. Eberle, Hemsky, Gagner, J.Schultz and Petry. All of their bottow two lines and 3rd D pairing shoot left. I suspect that presents challenges at certain areas on the ice.

  • Simon Gagne had a tumour the size of a tennis ball removed from his neck during the summer. He thinks it might have been a reason why he continued to have concussion-like symptoms. He is now healthy and hopeful his concussion issues are behind him.

GAME DAY PREDICTION: The Oilers will play much better than they did on Tuesday, but the Kings are the defending Cup champions and they'll leave Rexall with their first win of the season, 4-3.

OBVIOUS GAME DAY PREDICTION: Ryan Nugent-Hopkins has been rather quiet thus far, but he'll play he pick up two points and generate significantly more offence. The Kings will score their first PP goal of the season after the Oilers take another careless stick infraction early in the third period.

NOT-SO-OBVIOUS GAME DAY PREDICTION: During the first TV timeout a pancake will be tossed on the ice. With Dustin Penner a healthy scratch, many will wonder why it was thrown on the ice. Within seconds of the pancake landing, Penner will be seen leaving the pressbox with a smirk on his face. "I wasn't going to let any Oiler fan throw one first," he deadpanned.

FINAL COUNTDOWN

One of the hardest things in life is watching a grown man cry. Wanye lost five pounds on Tuesday, which is a lot for one day, but it's even scarier when all of it came out of his tear ducts. Even the free heroin beers at Rexall couldn't console him. But that wasn't the worst part. Yesterday he called me up bawling. I assumed he was still mad over the loss and how his man-crush, Jordan Eberle didn't score, but that wasn't it.

He's down in the dumps because his first annual Nation draft isn't sold out yet. He wanted $1,000 entries so he could raise a significant chunk of change for charity, and he's not taking it well. You'd think he'd be used to rejection by now, after getting shut down on a bi-weekly basis at the Pint, but he isn't.

Do me a favour, and him, and enter his draft. It's a pretty KICK-ASS draft to be honest.

First place wins a $5,000 shopping spree at United Cycle and there are 99 other prizes in the Nation's First Annual hockey draft. It is only $20 bucks with a portion of the funds going to charity. Bragging rights are on the line boys and girls, so enter today.

Wanye can't afford to lose another five pounds tonight. So enter. NOW.

Pretty sure Hall was saying the exact samething when Rishaug interviewed him during the warmup against SJ.

I guess we'll see if being embarrassed actually got the message through.

I wonder if the Oilers would ever consider bringing back a guy like Brad Winchester for the rest of the year to play on the 4th line?

I believe he is unsigned this year and if he was good enough to play the majority of games with the Sharks last year he would certainly be good enough for this 4th line.

IIRC, Winch got a tryout with the Flambes this year at TC - not sure if he's on their roster in the minors or was cut loose.

Edit: Just searched their website - Winch was released from his PTO.

Quote from Fistric: "It was beneficial for me to sit and watch how the team plays."

Having played in Dallas the past few years, he has seen LA quite often and could bring some more insight into playing them.

Although I think Yakupov's theory on winning will hold more weight tonight: score more goals than them.

Personally, I don't see that there's much chance of the Oilers putting a dent in the Kings 7-0-1 record in Rexall place.

Heres to the game that will likely once again prove the that Oil are just too small to push other players around. Cheers. Seriously I would have thought that Hordi would be in tonight. We need more physical guys and I guess I'm just not much of a Petrell fan. We need some better guys in the mix here that can do the banging and crashing. Also I'm still all for Dubinsky need to find a way to make that happen.

I expect Fistric will be an improvement over Potter. He looked AHLish the first 2 games. The question is will Whitney's game pick up when paired with Fistric?

Also, great news!!!! No more Potter on the PK.

Stauffer seems to think it will make a big difference on that pairing. And its not very often that he is wrong.

I missed the first period of Tuesday's game, so all I saw was a 2-0 win for the Oilers, a win which they dominated on the shot clock and in tempo. If they can get to a good start we should win. This is a good Oilers club whose youth is impacting consistency, but otherwise is super talented and will be able to blow the doors off any club.

GDP: Fans who made their way to Rexall ill be treated to a sloppy, yet exciting game. Final score-- 6-5 Oil.

OGDP: The Oilers power play will be lethal! Going 4-5 on the night with production from both units. An Eberle snapper from the high slot will chase Quick from the game.

NSOGDP: Heading out to the parking lot after collecting 2G, 2A and the first star of the game, Baby Nuge will be greeted by a voice. "Great game kid." He turns around to see Princess Paulina Gretzky, who traveled to E-town with Stoll. "I havent eaten all day, would you like to grab a bite?" she says. Nuge agrees and follows her into a limo, where 1980's Janet Jones is waiting. The Nuge turn around and gives a knowing wink to nobody in particular. They go to Arby's, and he CRUSHES 3 Beef 'n Cheddars like a champ!

Hate to be a Negative Nancy here, but what you consider a 2-0 win for the Oilers for the last two periods on Tuesday was against a Team that was mailing it in because they had already won the game. I'm all for being positive, but let's not kid ourselves, San Jose took their foot off the gas after the first.

Is there any truth to the rumour that the Oil are the team interested in trading for Luongo and his 9-year contract at $6+ million per year?

God help us if true! The club is still suffering from the 4-year deal with Khabibulin, Tambellini's MVP.

How about a trade with Montreal? Hemsky for Subban. The club needs help on D.

This team is built like an All-Star team , they cannot compete when there is little ice. Yes they have high skill and very little sandpaper or grit.

There philosophy has been pick the most skilled player and don't trade skilled player. This team has been a young talented team with potential for many years. When can this team be judged?

Lowe and Tambo need to go , look at team like St Louis or LA , why do you think Vancouver trade for Kassian giving a more gifted player.

Edmonton can have the first pick for another 5 years and they won't win.

The game has passed Lowe.

AS PER EKLUND (so we know it's gotta be true LOL)

On Luongo... Sources tell me talks with the Flyers haven't occurred since before the season, but the Oilers are putting together a hell of a package...still, all things equal, Gillis wants him out of the division and out of the Conference. My money would still be on Toronto, even though the Leafs are playing good hockey right now.

Way off on Hemsky getting you Subban. Gonna take a hell of a lot more. But lets look at the Lou contract right now. His Cap hit is actually 5.3 million. We have a couple years before the Nuge's new contract will come into effect and 3 before Yaks and Shultz's new contract are in effect. Now if you keep Dubnyk for the remainder of his contract(2years) its not so bad and by that time you will know if hes a starter or a backup. If he turns into a starter you will still be able to trade Lou at that point. If not you keep Lou sign Dubnyk for less and try and find a good youngster to take over for Lou in the next three years following.

Bulins contract is approx 3.8 mill. And the Oilers have approx 16 mill in cap space this year. Now if you not planning any huge acquisitions this season. Trade for Lou, put Bulin on waivers(doubt anyone picks him up). At the end of the season his contract is done.

Would you be willing to pay an extra 1.5 million a season to have Lou over Bulin??? I sure would.

Now Gagner is probably required to make the trade happen so a replacement for him will need to be found and I would be trying to get Dubinsky out of CLB. Then in the summer you just need to work on your bottom six. maybe buy out Horcoff to save cap space if needed. Defense is shaping up nicely, goal tending set for a while. If they could make the dubinsky trade and include Bulin in it that would be even better. Say if Mason gets hurt or Bobrovsky. Basically Bulin becomes the rental player. Maybe Lander and a pick could get it done should the situation happen.

I think there are some interesting things to think about when trading for Lou and the trades that would need to follow. Just think about it, might not be as crazy as you think.

L.A. just barely made playoffs last year . They are a club that is fit for playoff runs , moreso than regular season . We can beat this club handily if it does not get to be to physical , which i predict is going to happen tonite if refs toe the line . Scary footspeed with Whitney and Fistric ? Hartikainen on the fourth line makes no sense. He is perhaps the only big body forward who takes the puck to the net with authority. This creates time and space for the skilled players to set-up pretty plays.

I do not understand how he is supposed to succeed on the fourth line? He looked very strong in the last game, has chemistry as evidenced in the AHL, and is great at puck retreival.

Too many small forwards on one line playing essentially the same game......makes no sense!

Game Day Prediction: Dubnyk and the Oilers play much better and find a way to beat a "heavy" Los Angeles squad: 3-2 OT win.

Obvious Game Day Prediction: PP Unit #1 finally clicks tonight for 2 goals. Horcoff gets no points, and draws heavy criticism from many fans for being on that unit. (None of these people will notice how Horcoff contributed to these goals by winning draws, recovering pucks, or setting up effective screens...)

Not-So-Obvious Game day Prediction: Fistric catches Dustin Brown with his head down and lowers the boom. Oiler fans everywhere go crazy except for that guy with the crazy beard in Section 335 wearing the modified Souray to Potter Jersey with cheese stains all over it...

We can't get caught playing the Kings in a cycle game. We need to play on the rush and use our speed. Easier said than done. A better performance tonight but the Kings find a way to get their first win. Kings win 3-2. Oilers goals by Hall and Gagner. GO OILERS GO!!

The 70's were weird - maybe someday LT and Bruce can tell us all about them.

If Wanye wants more entries perhaps he should lift the limitation of the contest being open to only residents of Alberta. I am sad.

I am surprised there is not more talk about Subban. Top 2 defencemen are as rare as hens teeth. I wonder what it would actually take? I love yak, but might be inclined to do it, if there were more components. I hope we are in the discussion anyway.

L.A. just barely made playoffs last year . They are a club that is fit for playoff runs , moreso than regular season . We can beat this club handily if it does not get to be to physical , which i predict is going to happen tonite if refs toe the line . Scary footspeed with Whitney and Fistric ? Could be an adventure .

Oilers 5-L.A. 2 .

Just barely made it into the playoffs, but it's worth noting that they only lost a few games during the reg season last year after Sutter took hold of that rudderless ship.

They also just got Kopitar back in the lineup since tweaking his knee in Europe.

A agree about the Whitney/Fistric pairing, but I guess we'll see. I personally think another ugly game is at hand tonight.

I keep hearing about this Sandpaper player. I know he doesn't play for us but according to a lot of posters here he seems to play for every team we play against. Funny he never shows up on the score sheet. I check and double check all the time, but can never seem to find his name anywhere. Is he Canadian, Russian, Swede, where's he from? Confused???
