Our long national nightmare is over. The NHL and NHLPA--with a major assist from mediator Scot Beckenbaugh--have reached a tentative agreement!
Details are just coming out, but there's talk of the NHL season beginning January 19th and a 48 or 50 game schedule. There are some interesting changes and more coming available as we roll, but the pertinent items are here courtesy tsn.
Among the major items of interest:
- The cap in year one is $60M, floor $44M and teams can spend up to $70.2M. Don't ask, I don't know either I believe it's in order to allow transition for some of the cap teams.
- It looks like the season will start either on January 15th (50 game season) or January 19th (48 game season).
- Training camps to start this week, as early as Wednesday.
- The draft lottery selection process will change with all 14 teams fully eligible for the first overall pick. The weighting system for each team may remain, but four-spot move restriction will be eliminated. I think this might end up being known as the "Oiler" rule, as it gives teams less impetus to finish at the bottom of the standings.
- Free agency remains July 1st.

TSN really needs to think their draft lottery show through now.
You can't just count down from five anymore. If someone is out of place than it ruins the show.
Do you start with 3, and go up? If this position does not have the right team in it than what?
So, we waited until January to find out that Bettman is not the big man he thinks he is? But Bettman likes hockey more than Fehr and the players, apparently.
Just so everyone is aware, the deal still has to be put to paper and ratified. There are a couple more places where B-man and Fear can kill this. *No Trust!*

If the players kill this than they are the greedy jerks who will lose out on more paychecks and lost the last 10 percent of people who support them.

ok, now that that is out of the way... a couple of tangential questions:
1) what happens to the hybrid icing? will they have to start all over again on this next year, or will the nhlpa agree to it as a kind of amendment to the cba?
2) what happens to the conference reorganization? will it go into effect, or will they have to wait for the nhlpa to sign on at some later meeting?

1) Isn't that something for the rules commitee not the CBA? 2)Read somewhere this morning it still has to be worked out with the union.Don't think it will be a stumbling block.

wasn't thinking of either as a stumbling block to the cba.
just noting that neither was fully ratified because the nhlpa refused to consent to anything until the cba was in place... because they thought agreeing to anything with the nhl would equal a loss of bargaining position.
so... if a new cba is in place... does that mean both will go into effect... i.e., the nhlpa will sign on
(i guess "amendment to the cba" is poorly worded... i didn't mean as part of the cba... i just meant as something that is contingent upon a cba being in place, at least from the pov of the nhlpa)

About halfway down
There are a number of issues which still need to be agreed to, including the Olympics, though NHL participation seems likely. Realignment is also consigned to a future decision, and will not take effect this year. The deal will need to ratified by the owners and the players. It could take a few days to settle the non-dealbreaker clauses, and put the whole thing in writing. There is work to be done.
