The Ladislav Smid exit kicks off 'trading season' in Edmonton, the annual sell-off of actual NHL players for picks and prospects. It has to be a bitter pill for the organization, but it's important for them to make rational decisions and receive value for their veterans. Here's a look at some players who may be headed out of Edmonton long before the deadline.

WHO'S AVAILABLE?

  1. R Ales Hemsky (19, 3-6-9 -12). The veteran winger is spending his 10th winter with the club, but most believe he'll be sent away some time over the winter. The playoffs are not going to happen for the Oilers, and there's a growing number of teams who are losing touch with the front of the pack in their respective divisions. Those teams--especially the ones with offensive problems--may see Hemsky as an attractive option. If Edmonton can keep some of the cap hit, that makes him even more attractive. Estimated value: 2014 1st or 2nd rd pick.
  2. D Nick Schultz (17, 0-1-1 -1). Stay-at-home veteran defenseman always have tremendous value at the deadline, and the appeal of Schultz is the expiring contract. Many Oiler fans were shocked by the Smid return, but long term deals for defensive defensemen reduces value (clubs don't want their cap tied up that way). Schultz can slot right in and play at the NHL level, and that makes him a player of interest. Estimated value: 2014 3rd rd pick.
  3. F Ryan Jones (11, 2-1-3 +3).Having a nice season, Jones is a veteran who can jump in and contribute on more than one line, and his offense is a nice kicker. Estimated value: 2014 4th rd pick.
  4. Any of the goalies who play well. It's open season for goalies in Edmonton. If one of Dubnyk or Bryzgalov plays well enough to attract a team's interest (and the Oil don't feel he's in the future plans), they could be gone.

THE HEART OF THE ORDER

Craig MacTavish has been sending away some players some of us thought were part of the future (Smid most recently), so we're getting a better view of how the new GM sees this team. We're all going to have different names (I suspect) here and there, but the heart of the cluster from my point of view is this:

  1. Taylor Hall
  2. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins
  3. Jordan Eberle
  4. Nail Yakupov
  5. David Perron
  6. Sam Gagner
  7. Boyd Gordon
  8. Jeff Petry (RFA)
  9. Justin Schultz (RFA)
  10. Andrew Ference

That's 10 players, three of whom (Perron, Gordon and Ference) were acquired by MacTavish as GM and two of whom (Yakupov, Justin Schultz) were procured by the organization with MacTavish in the fold.

ANYONE EMERGING THIS YEAR?

  1. D Anton Belov: He's been a revelation.
  2. C Mark Arcobello: I think he's shown enough to be considered a strong candidate for next year's roster.
  3. L Jesse Joensuu: Looked good early, injuries have impacted his season.
  4. C Will Acton: Brings some interesting things, difficult to know how well he's playing because of the enforcer nature of linemates
  5. L Luke Gazdic: Young and tough, he's done well in the enforcer role.
  6. D Phil Larsen: Looked good in early exposure, jury is out as things roll along.
  7. D Taylor Fedun: As with Larsen, we'll have to wait and see. Hit and miss.

BUBBLING UNDER

  1. D Darnell Nurse: He got a long look at training camp this season, and could make the club in 2014 fall.
  2. D Oscar Klefbom: 1st rd pick in 2011 will probably see action in the NHL this year.
  3. D Martin Marincin: In his second season in the AHL, working toward NHL employment
  4. R Tyler Pitlick: Looked good in an NHL cup of coffee.
  5. F Roman Horak: May see NHL time this season, is a better player than some current Oilers.

WHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN?

 Rebuild. I hate that word.

This is the exact kind of mentality that results in 30th place standings year after year.

You know what the problem is with you Oiler fans.. Instead of building a good team, you build and reward failure. Snowpants should be out the door, he's been here how long and he couldn't do anything, can't win a faceoff to save his life. Arcobello? You want this guy on next year's roster.. Good teams do NOT have a guy like Arcobello in their top centres. Good teams have that bastard on a one way ticket to AHL.

Made me cry too. Basically we are not only out of the playoffs this year, but we are also saying we'll probably be a joke again next year. This is so sad. Wtf is the obsession with these "wonder kids"? Isn't the goal of any hockey team to get into the playoffs and win eventually the god damn cup? Done cheering for this losers!!

I know I'm speaking blasphemy on this site but Eberle should be traded soon. He's a great player but his skill set matches that of most of our top 6 combined with he plays a less physical game than players like Hall or Perron. Obviously this combination isn't working. A big shake up is needed.

The Avs win again tonight 4-1. To think Oilers Management once said they were on track with this rebuild just like them. Hahahahahhaha. Right!!!! How about for practice they don't waste time working on the "swarm system " and just watch the Avs game over and over, or pretty much anytime for that matter not named Buffalo, Florida or Philly.

AAARRRGGGHHHH. More draft picks? Can't we even trade for NHL players anymore? What the h3ll do we even have professional scouts for at this point?

Shouldn't Katz maybe get an external review of the Oilers' operations to get an objective opinion as to what is wrong with this blasted team?

Sorry about the rant but it's hard to watch the modest gains of last year somehow get erased and the team slide further into the dumpster...

I agree with your view on Gagner. Unfortunately McTavish doesn't. I don't get it either. Arcs bello on the other hand could hold some depth value and has played well despite his size. Marty St Louis was quite similar earlier in his career and Calgary jumped the gun in getting rid of him. I think Flames fans still loathe that move. Just sayin...

agreed. you won't get a first rounder for Hemsky. i have a hard time believing this guy is even tradable. at 5.5 mil next year, who in the hell would take that on. no team with cap space looking for a player to build on would. and most other contending teams don't just have the cap space for a guy like him. i don't know what the hell they were thinking when the signed him to that much money.

Lowetide - You have a lot of airtime to fill talking about next year and the draft. I don't envy your job.

The rest of the people can just turn the channel and forget about it for a while.

Its really like watching a soap opera, you can miss 2 or 3 weeks and really you haven't missed a whole lot.

Still can't play defense, still having horrible turnovers, still losing a whole lot - same as it ever was.

Meanwhile the talking heads will be rehashing the "positives" 5 vs 5 success, corsi improvements, good arrows - all of that stuff. Yet the spiral to the bottom continues.

The graphic on this site is ironic with the T-shirts that say "Hope Will Never Die". That should maybe be the next Poll question on here.

Is there any hope left?

The Winnipeg Jets just beat the San Jose Sharks 5-4 in a shootout...outshooting the Sharks 46-34.

So, the only remaining question this season is "can the Oilers finish ahead of Calgary"?

The Oilers have more talent (for now) but the Flames work their butts every shift, every game.

Should be interesting.

If the Oilers lose (as expected) to Dallas and San Jose and then stink the joint out against the Flames, I think you'll finally see the Tier One fans go into full rage mode.

He's essentially been every bit as good as Gagner. Are you saying Gagner is an AHL'er.

With thinking like that, now we're getting somewhere. What can Gags do that Arcobello can't, for only 600.000 per yr? Either of the two are 3rd line centers at best on a competitive team.

What say you LT. Has Mark done enough so far to make Gagner expendable?

I've was a fan from the WHA days and a season ticket holder for many years.

I would love to see the Oilers improve but, as you may have guessed from my posts, I don't think there is the remotest chance the team can be a winner again as long as Kevin Lowe and his his Band of Bozos ® is driving the bus.

Everything I've seen throughout Lowe's tenure convinces me he doesn't have a clue about what he's doing.

And, yet, there he is.

As for the future, I've pretty much become a free agent fan, cheering not for any particular team but appreciating the team management that knows what it's doing and the special players who exceed expectations.

Being freed from the fetters of fandom actually lets you appreciate a beautiful game on another level entirely.

It's getting to the point where many oilers fans are going to be in your corner. I've lost faith in this team getting any better with the same group in charge. But as you mentioned still after all this failure there Lowe is. Even after all the outcry for change the oilers brass responded by trading Smid for a salary relief and signing Brizgalov. How bad does it have to get before Lowe is gone? I don't get it !

Looks like another sell off coming. Lowe still is in charge. I don't see anything changing until Katz sets things right. The ball is in his court.

Interesting that just when you asked me that question, the latest edition of Oil Change came on Sportsnet Pacific.

What an absolute load of codswallop.

As for the Oilers, I watch pretty much every game although I have to admit I have another game or two running on Game Centre at the same time.

I don't see anything changing much until Katz gets the message that the organization needs a complete flush.

None of Lowe, MacT or Eakins has the expertise to build a winner IMO and this season, the way it is trending, may well be a watershed.

You can't pick in the top 10 that many years in a row, spend near the cap and still be one of the worst teams in the league without there being accountability...can you?

Don't you need to finish a rebuild in order to start another? The Oil have pretty much been using the term "rebuild" since the mid-90s. The term doesn't really mean much to me any more ... or at least until we actually HAVE rebuilt in the first place.
