The Ladislav Smid exit kicks off 'trading season' in Edmonton, the annual sell-off of actual NHL players for picks and prospects. It has to be a bitter pill for the organization, but it's important for them to make rational decisions and receive value for their veterans. Here's a look at some players who may be headed out of Edmonton long before the deadline.

WHO'S AVAILABLE?

  1. R Ales Hemsky (19, 3-6-9 -12). The veteran winger is spending his 10th winter with the club, but most believe he'll be sent away some time over the winter. The playoffs are not going to happen for the Oilers, and there's a growing number of teams who are losing touch with the front of the pack in their respective divisions. Those teams--especially the ones with offensive problems--may see Hemsky as an attractive option. If Edmonton can keep some of the cap hit, that makes him even more attractive. Estimated value: 2014 1st or 2nd rd pick.
  2. D Nick Schultz (17, 0-1-1 -1). Stay-at-home veteran defenseman always have tremendous value at the deadline, and the appeal of Schultz is the expiring contract. Many Oiler fans were shocked by the Smid return, but long term deals for defensive defensemen reduces value (clubs don't want their cap tied up that way). Schultz can slot right in and play at the NHL level, and that makes him a player of interest. Estimated value: 2014 3rd rd pick.
  3. F Ryan Jones (11, 2-1-3 +3).Having a nice season, Jones is a veteran who can jump in and contribute on more than one line, and his offense is a nice kicker. Estimated value: 2014 4th rd pick.
  4. Any of the goalies who play well. It's open season for goalies in Edmonton. If one of Dubnyk or Bryzgalov plays well enough to attract a team's interest (and the Oil don't feel he's in the future plans), they could be gone.

THE HEART OF THE ORDER

Craig MacTavish has been sending away some players some of us thought were part of the future (Smid most recently), so we're getting a better view of how the new GM sees this team. We're all going to have different names (I suspect) here and there, but the heart of the cluster from my point of view is this:

  1. Taylor Hall
  2. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins
  3. Jordan Eberle
  4. Nail Yakupov
  5. David Perron
  6. Sam Gagner
  7. Boyd Gordon
  8. Jeff Petry (RFA)
  9. Justin Schultz (RFA)
  10. Andrew Ference

That's 10 players, three of whom (Perron, Gordon and Ference) were acquired by MacTavish as GM and two of whom (Yakupov, Justin Schultz) were procured by the organization with MacTavish in the fold.

ANYONE EMERGING THIS YEAR?

  1. D Anton Belov: He's been a revelation.
  2. C Mark Arcobello: I think he's shown enough to be considered a strong candidate for next year's roster.
  3. L Jesse Joensuu: Looked good early, injuries have impacted his season.
  4. C Will Acton: Brings some interesting things, difficult to know how well he's playing because of the enforcer nature of linemates
  5. L Luke Gazdic: Young and tough, he's done well in the enforcer role.
  6. D Phil Larsen: Looked good in early exposure, jury is out as things roll along.
  7. D Taylor Fedun: As with Larsen, we'll have to wait and see. Hit and miss.

BUBBLING UNDER

  1. D Darnell Nurse: He got a long look at training camp this season, and could make the club in 2014 fall.
  2. D Oscar Klefbom: 1st rd pick in 2011 will probably see action in the NHL this year.
  3. D Martin Marincin: In his second season in the AHL, working toward NHL employment
  4. R Tyler Pitlick: Looked good in an NHL cup of coffee.
  5. F Roman Horak: May see NHL time this season, is a better player than some current Oilers.

WHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN?

 Rebuild. I hate that word.

Some comments from TSN: "If the Oilers don;t have 10 wins by Christmas, the revolving head coach door must continue and the entire staff have to be given their walking papers. Eakins is standing 6 feet tall in 10 feet of water and it shows." "Betting against the Oilers can't even be considered gambling anymore" " Bonehead move by MacTavish to trade smid for a tiny forward and a goalie who won't be ready for a while. The oilers have the worst management in the league. It isn't even close." "Blackhawks proved you only have to show up for 20 minutes to beat the Oilers on any given night." "Honestly, just replace the Oilers with their AHL affiliate team, the OKC Barons. They properly would have a better chance at winning games. " "At least the Sabres have a promising future." "How's that trade working out for you, MacT? You needed D, so you got rid of your best one (plus a decent G prospect) for a low prospect F and a decent G prospect"

With the "out of the closet disgust" by the vast majority of Oil fans, surely Katz must realize that the tide of support Oil fans, despite what tier one puts them on has plummeted to the lowest point in Oiler history? This run-away train is not even close to coming to a halt.

The real tell tale sign that the organization is without support or even "respect", is when the solid fan base turns on their own team. This is now happening. Katz knew full well that the fan base of this team was what all owners want.....a pure money making machine. The ticket sales have been awesome, merchandise has always been purchased since day one.

With his success as a business owner, it would be ridiculous to believe that he does not see the slide happening with the Mighty Oil. The Oil is a "Cash Cow" for Katz as it should be. The longer he sits back and permits the decline of this organization to the point of no return (lets hope we are not there yet) then the shame will be on him and him alone. Katz is a most private man but I am sure he has a pride trait built into him and due to such, he does not want his name associated to LOOSER for too long?

As Joe Six Pack fan, which the vast majority of hockey fans are, I am almost at the point of no return myself. Most businesses whom loose their bread and butter customers will at the very least, have profits erode in a downward spiral.

Rebuild has become the new four letter word!

A heads up for all the posters on here hoping on drafting McDavid in June. Connor McDavid is NOTdraft eligible until 2015!!! That would require the Oil to finish in 30th place NEXT year (2014/15) too. Please quit talking about getting McDavid in the draft, wrong year. It makes you look foolish.

Lowetide, I have a question for you? Why doesn't Eakins put Acrobello @ C & move Gagner over to the wing. Acrobello is much better in the dot, his .525 to Gagners .422 (or career ave of .446) is a huge difference. Gagner is no better, maybe even a bit worse @ D-zone coverage too. If everything is equal between the two, and Arcobello's fo% is that much better, that alone should call for a move, shouldn't it? Taylor Hall moved to C to do whatever the team needed of him for them to win, do you think Sam will (would) do the same? I continually hear how he "doesn't" want to move & I never hear him say, i'll do whatever the team needs. I also think that it would open up Sam's game too, thus allowing for him to be a bit more creative. Sam has been @ C now for several years, and he isn't showing any improvement what so ever, & Arcobello showed improvement from day 1 and continued, thus, I think has earned himself a shot @ the 2nd or 3rd line C, moving Sam to the 2nd line wing 1st line: Hall-RNH-Eberle 2nd line: Gagner-Arcobello-Hemsky 3rd line: Smyth-Gordon-Yakupov

What do you think???

Looking at the Oilers it is fairly obvious they need strength down the middle. I believe RNH will develop into a true #1C. I also believe that Boyd Gordon has the skill and commitment to be a #3C. Where the gaping hole exists is at #2C. Gagner has not got the size, the strength, the scoring ability, the playmaking ability and, most certainly not, the defensive skills necessary for a contending team. While young, he is a veteran on this team and he still can't cover anybody defensively, can't win a face off and comes across as a poser. It is easy to talk a good game and say the right things. It is much tougher and much more important to display these traits. Sam does not have what it takes.

Try and keep up with the pace here Zulu.

Everyone knows he's still more than a year away. What you appear to be unaware of is the fact the Oilers will "always" be in the running for that first overall selection. Edmonton has a real shot at a first overall again this coming summer. It isn't at all a reach to assume they're going to be in that race next season as well.

Try and keep up to the pace here, fool.

Oh I see...you Oiler writers, fans and management still want your cake and eat it too?? That is let's drastically overhaul and improve our team but we get to keep all of our 1st overalls as well as Eberle and Gagne. I'm sure the other teams will give us great return for our garbage players.

I'm afraid that's the way Kevin Lowe also thinks. You guys in Oilerland just don't get it?

The losing will continue...I'm thinking for the next decade as a minimum.

In NHL.com's Sunday Long Read today, it talked about the rebuild. This is the time when we should be turning it around. McPhee in WSH mentioned how tough it would be on a fan base if the rebuilding experiment doesn't work. It's tough, lemme tell ya. After tonight's loss I think only Hall, Nuge, and Yak should be untouchable. I would hate to see Eberle go but the return would be significant, everyone has seen him on the world stage. I'll take it shaken, not stirred.

If the team is this bad and cant be held up by the three 1st overall picks, isnt it time to think about rebuilding the rebuild?

Shouldn't rebuilds start with acquiring the personnel that takes the longest to mature? The Oil have a respectable stable of D coming up. If our prized forwards were all traded for picks/assests new forwards could be brought in over the next year and be ready for 2014/15. Only way I see the rebuild being worth 7 years of crap is if it equates to a perennial playoff team and the timeline of contracts is now going to make that very difficult.

"I'm not confident that Tier One fans are attracted to winning so much as they're prideful that they can afford Oiler tickets and jerseys and stickers on their trucks. I'm not convinced they're going out to see their team win as much as they're there to be seen. They may get a little bitchier at the continuing slide to the bottom (not much further kids, almost there!), but I don't think they're looking for the best hockey game in town."

I believe this comment 100%, and this is what is/will slow any "fan planned revolt" needed in order to get a message to Katzy that Kblowe must go, McT possibly back to coaching, and Eakins out the door!

I'm afraid this is going to be a long long process. In the meantime, I suggest everyone find an alternative team to cheer, for now

Will keep you posted on when you all can go back to being Oiler Fans

Supporting this team by buying tickets and merchandise is akin to enabling an addict. Time to send a message Oil Nation. The only thing Katz likes more than hanging with the Boys on the Bus is money. Affect his flow and changes will follow, it's the only way! Besides who in their right mind would pay to watch this group right now?!?!?! Anything more than an average AHL ticket price would be too much!

They also need to get out there and find a goalie coach, one that can teach our 6'5 goalie to play the proper angles & read the plays.....Dallas Eakins (IMO) is the proper man to run the ship, but he needs the appropriate supporting coaching staff that can help him, as a rookie NHL coach, get this "ship" turned around.

The Oilers have enough talent to build a winner, but they definitely need to put this 80's run & gun system behind them, and start playing a much more responsible defensive system on a nightly basis. It's great that we have all of these young point producers, but if they can't defend our own net, it's pointless.

Wait so the assistant coaches are the problem here? Next we will all be blaming the locker room attendants and stick guys maybe the Zamboni drivers should be fired too...

The Oilers do not have the RIGHT talent that is the issue and management has shown itself not capable of making hard decisions to move forward with a new formula of players.

I like Dallas I am not ready to thrown him out at this point.

If this is how Katz made his billions and was successful, then I give him credit.

How can a billionaire be so successful at one thing, and so bad at another.

I don't think the Islanders were as dysfunctional at the height of their mess. My plan is to watch the rest of the year, as this is like driving and seeing roadkill on the right hand side of the ditch. You just gotta look, stop the car and take a picture. With Bryz coming, I may start watching Oil Change as it looks like this years contributions should be up for a day time Emmy. How many more years of that show they going to run.

few things

1. You don't want to fault Dubnyk because he made some great saves... but what happened to a goalie playing well for 60min. He let in a couple softies and that was the difference.

2. How do we stop our own zone turnovers? How do we learn not to treat the puck like a hot potato in our own end?

3. It is tempting to think we can skate with the Hawks because it was a fun game that went into the 3rd tied 3-3, but when the Hawks played their possession game they were a much better team.

4. I thought the line combinations looked better last night. Gordon on a fourth line and Arco on a third line feels like the move for now.

5. Love Smyth but he is just a step or four too slow right now. Love Jones, but there has to be a better option that we could deal for.

I have been watching a lot of game center games lately.

I've noticed the good teams like the Pens, Sharks, and kings never stop moving its only when their in there own end they box out the opposition to the outside, even then their still moving ready to make a rush.

There's teams like the lighting where only one line will do this all the time(Stamkos line).

When I watched the Detroit game the Oilers weren't moving they fell into Detroit's game, I seen like two minutes of this then changed the channel, I knew what was going to happen.

Before the Oilers played against the lighting I knew if the oilers didn't take out Stamkos and St.louis we are going to lose that game and we did.

This is on the coaching Staff they all need to be changed, I'm sure that's easier then a whole rebuild or trying to get vets that know this stuff already.

Come on Mc.T hurt some feeling already.

Get used to it. Time for this so called management team to admit their mistakes and make some bold trades to correct the situation. Smid was expendable, period!! We needed a better goaltending prospect and we got one in IMHO. Gagner needs a fresh start somewhere else, package Eberle and our first for Weber if available. Nurse & Klefbom are coming. The sky is not falling people. I don't like Lowe but I think MacT can right the ship in time and Eakins will be fine.

What an absolute load of codswallop.

As for the Oilers, I watch pretty much every game although I have to admit I have another game or two running on Game Centre at the same time.

I don't see anything changing much until Katz gets the message that the organization needs a complete flush.

None of Lowe, MacT or Eakins has the expertise to build a winner IMO and this season, the way it is trending, may well be a watershed.

You can't pick in the top 10 that many years in a row, spend near the cap and still be one of the worst teams in the league without there being accountability...can you?

I find getting into 3 or 4 hockey pools provides enough distraction as a fan of a team that sucks but enables one to still enjoy hockey. It's the best thing to hedging my emotions that I can find. It also allows you to broaden what you get out of the NHL & lesson the need to fund the drain of my hard earned $$$ in a piss poor run franchise not worthy of my support.
