I know this is petty, we're better than that and it's a small victory. There is absolutely no way it's going to be enough, the season is an out of control train and beating one bad team counts for zero in real life.

Don't care. Whatever else happens, beat Calgary.

AS IT STANDS

The team is 1-5-0 at home, 3-8-2 on the road and 2-7-1 in their last 10. They have so many holes defensively the mind boggles, and the mood of the city is toxic. Into that atmosphere the Oilers have to score early, get the crowd behind them and improve that home record in a big way.

The two teams (Calgary and Edmonton) are both 2-7-1 in the last 10, and the Oilers can close the gap to three points tonight (Calgary will have two games in hand). Their first 10 games (3-6-1) were better than the next nine games (1-7-1 entering tonight) but it's also true tonight's game is only their 7th at home all season. That could make a difference if they take advantage of last change, and the Rexall crowd needs to cheer like mad, too.

COME ON, MAN

The goals for is no screaming hell, but that GA total is ghastly. If the Oilers are going to get anything done this season--and we're not asking for much--then the goals against total must go down. At their current pace, the club is on track to allow 324 goals, the highest total for an Oilers team since 1992-93, their black hole season.

WHAT HAVE YOU DONE FOR ME, LATELY

The offense lost both Taylor Hall and David Perron for extended periods during the last 10 games, and Justin Schultz was ineffective/injured. Oilers used 28 position players during the last 10 games.

Holy mackerel, that's a lot of goals against!

WHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN?

This team needs to focus on the detail work, the defensive chores, the scut work. They need to catch Calgary. After that, they can find another target.

Does it bother oiler fans that the flames rebuild is already ahead of the oilers.. Even though oiler fans told flames fans that the oilers rebuild is the way to go. Pretty sad when yakopov already wants out. The oilers are the new new york islanders / florida panthers, except edmonton is a crap hole to live in, unless to you have a mobile home and a nice set of sweat pants. Hey, you always got stanley cups from 30 years ago to celebrate.. Go oil

You've got that right! Eakins is punishing Yak for speaking out, but he'll continue to say Yak has to "earn" more playing time..kind of difficult to do that when your sitting on the bench though..

@DSF

The hounds should have been unleashed already. Why there isn't more criticism of Eakins astounds me. The guy doesn't admit he makes mistakes, hasn't adjusted his coaching style to the teams he plays, is making very questionable line combinations, etc. etc. This team is going nowhere with him as coach.

Trading one of the few defensemen we had that would block shots (Smid) in return for the proverbial bag of pucks/prospect makes one wonder about MacT's judgement.

Lowe should have been long gone.

Calgary at least plays a system and works hard and the only question is whether Calgary or Edmonton finish last in the Division. My bet is that as long as Eakins is coach, it will be Edmonton.

As to Yak, he will be great in time, but unfortunately not here with the coach we have.

I realize why Smid was dumped, but there are other players I can think of on the Oilers who could have been dumped instead.

The other point is why sign Brysgalov? Season is done, chances of Bysgalov signing with the Oilers long term after this season is slim to none.

Anyway you slice it, just a poor, poor trade.

If the Oilers lose against San Jose ( which is a given) then go into Calgary and lose, that should be it for the whole lot of them upstairs.

How this is allowed to continue is beyond me?

MacTavish is so far over his head he's clearly drowning, he's made one good trade, an absolute brutal trade, a bunch of piss poor signings and can't find NHL players if his life depended on it, he's got a forth line of AHL players, no top pairing defensmen & his centre depth is abysmal.

To make maters worse he brought in a rookie coach and the only person Eakins can lean on is in his own personal nightmare giving obviously bad direction to his head coach.

Meanwhile POHO is in need of a serious career change.

All this and the worse Oiler record in history & we have not even seen the absentee owner.

Oh ya! That's how ya run a championship team.

not only did eakins not put yakupov on for the 5 on 3 but then he puts him on the ice right after the penalties expired-i was on board with keeping eakins to try and get some continuity going however this coach has proven that he is over his head and has absolutely no right coaching an nhl team- MOST USELESS COACH EVER!

Just finished reading Malcolm Gladwell's new book David and Goliath. What a read. So many things in that book had relevant application to the Oilers, and Yakupov in particular.

Players like Yakupov, Hall, and RNH who have always been the best wherever they've played have to be treated that way even if it isn't the case in order to provide the best development. It seems to go against common sense, but giving yakupov top line minutes for the entire season may be the best way to get his game going, even if he hasn't earned it. He definitely hasn't been the one of our best 6 forwards, but treating someone like yakupov as if they are anything other than one of the best players is almost guaranteed to result in stunting his development. However, if you truly can't give yakupov 17+ minutes every night until he finds his game, than you can send him to OKC. The book talks about tens of thousands of cases of students going to a smaller, less competitive environment and having more successful careers than superior students placed in more competitive environments. If neither of those things takes place, he will lose his confidence and almost certainly fail to reach his potential. Strongly recommend reading the chapter on the big fish bigger pond.

Also, the book further reinforces that sometimes things that appear so clearly to be advantages (adding never ending amounts of skill and goal scoring) can become massive disadvantages. This seems counter intuitive since scoring goals is the entire purpose of a hockey game, but obviously there is more to it than that. Just backs up a ton of the talk about how the oilers need more than just skilled goal scorers. Size, physicality, defensive reliablity.. all obvious deficiencies

There are a number of studies about underdogs that just rang so true when compared to the oilers. I could definitely be misinterpreting the findings, but it sure made me think the oilers are screwed if they don't trade one of their stars and start developing draft picks in jr. and the ahl before just throwing them to the wolves in the nhl.

Its only a matter of time.

The past 5 or 6 games hall doesn't have any fire or the usually emotion both positive or negative he usually plays with.

I fear it's not long now.

If the oilers lose Hall or RNH I'm taking a break. I'm going down with this ship but I won't watch k Lowe build another, captain the boat yet again and go down with that one too.

I've waited patiently for 4 years watching this oiler rebuild. I need some damn results.

I live in Kingston, Ontario. For those who may not be aware this is home to Taylor Hall. Some local sources that seem to be close to his family here have disclosed that Hall is looking to get traded by the deadline if things won't change. I do not have any info on the validity of this source or the actual truth of it. I can deduct that it is not impossible that Hall would ask for a trade.

I am no coach but the problem with the powerplay is the same as it has always been. No net front presence. Everything is on the perimeter. Teams now know how to shut the Oil down by pressuring the puck carrier and getting sticks in the lanes. The numbers last year were not reflective of the PP system, the Oilers bread and butter was that down low pass across the front of the net. Teams have taken that away this year.

Lehtonen saw every shot last night.

yes- what our brain trust fails to address that hockey is a team sport and you won't build a winner with a group of number 1 over all picks. As long as we have the team make up we have we will continue to fail. Sadly we have the makings of another top 5 pick. A reality we are all going to have to face is that sooner or later we are going to have to Trade one or more of our top recent picks. This includes Taylor Hall. Current Management have been assessing this gong show for years and for the life of me I can't figure out how they continue to try and fit a square peg in a round hole. We you are drafting top 5 and picking the best available you are not addressing team needs. When you acquired enough of these assets, at some point you need to make moves that will address team needs. Mac T talks about Bold moves. I do not call these Bold moves but rather a necessity in building an NHL team not a POND hockey team. Which is basically what we have.

To all intents and purposes, Training Camp for 2014-2015 season starts now.

The first proper step in building a team (I refuse to use "re") is to prune the tree and clear out the deadwood. For whatever reasons the past Oilers management groups have been strangely reluctant to do this (remember carrying THREE goaltenders so that JDD wouldn't be exposed to waivers -- really?)While MacTavish seems more willing to say goodbye than Lowe or Tambo, he still re-signed Jones.

The last 3/4 of this season needs to be used to -- rather ruthlessly -- determine the relative value of every player/prospect under contract. So shuffle 'em back and forth to OKC, give everyone a look, and for love's sake, put those who fall short on the next ice flow out of here. There is absolutely no reason for a team that is in the bottom 1-5 spots to be anywhere near this close to either the cap or the 50 contract limit.
