I know this is petty, we're better than that and it's a small victory. There is absolutely no way it's going to be enough, the season is an out of control train and beating one bad team counts for zero in real life.

Don't care. Whatever else happens, beat Calgary.

AS IT STANDS

The team is 1-5-0 at home, 3-8-2 on the road and 2-7-1 in their last 10. They have so many holes defensively the mind boggles, and the mood of the city is toxic. Into that atmosphere the Oilers have to score early, get the crowd behind them and improve that home record in a big way.

The two teams (Calgary and Edmonton) are both 2-7-1 in the last 10, and the Oilers can close the gap to three points tonight (Calgary will have two games in hand). Their first 10 games (3-6-1) were better than the next nine games (1-7-1 entering tonight) but it's also true tonight's game is only their 7th at home all season. That could make a difference if they take advantage of last change, and the Rexall crowd needs to cheer like mad, too.

COME ON, MAN

The goals for is no screaming hell, but that GA total is ghastly. If the Oilers are going to get anything done this season--and we're not asking for much--then the goals against total must go down. At their current pace, the club is on track to allow 324 goals, the highest total for an Oilers team since 1992-93, their black hole season.

WHAT HAVE YOU DONE FOR ME, LATELY

The offense lost both Taylor Hall and David Perron for extended periods during the last 10 games, and Justin Schultz was ineffective/injured. Oilers used 28 position players during the last 10 games.

Holy mackerel, that's a lot of goals against!

WHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN?

This team needs to focus on the detail work, the defensive chores, the scut work. They need to catch Calgary. After that, they can find another target.

Yakupov was skating like Dustin Penner last night. Until he consistently fore-checks, never mind back-checks, he's getting the minutes he deserves. It's a shame we can't run 12 players on the 4th line though, because Yak is far from the only one who deserves to be there.

With that said, Yak should have been on the ice for the 5 on 3. Eakins was being an idiot with that setup, and thinks we're idiots when he comes out after the game and said their setup was 'close' to what he wants.

Have you met the man? What the hell is he supposed to say in the media? He has made mistakes no question and so has every player on this team. He has also tweaked the system to try and rectify those mistakes and he certainly doesn't need to explain what goes on in the room to you or any other fan out there.

If the coach isn't committed to the system, how do you expect the players to be.

It's called leadership and this is a game for crying out loud. If you or anyone is losing their minds to the point of posting on a fan blog the crap you just spewed out, you need to seek the help of a professional, or get a different hobby.

My god people it's a bloody hockey game.

Maybe, just maybe, the Lotto Kings are not the elite stars many taught they were . Sure is obvious that the performance and scoring ability against other top players is not evident here.

How is it that players with lesser press clippings are out performing the Fab Five.

Cant all be on the coach, when you cant even score 5 on three two differenct times.Give aways , bad passes, turnovers are not the coaches fault... you are getting paid $6 million friggin dollars a year...to play in the NHL, so play like an NHL player not a peewee who is still learning the basics.

Look if it is the coach... then MacT and Lowe man up and fire the guy,,,, along with your resignations... this is a disaster ..

I just want to see one breakout play that is well executed. I do not need to see a complete 60 minute game, just one simple breakout play.

I would also accept one complete passing play. I just can't believe we are down to accepting so very little from these supposed high-skill first round players we have been drafting.

Bring Brent Sutter in at least he could teach a simple breakout play to these clowns!

Listening to the media defend this coach and management is beyond pathetic. Eakins cannot coach this team and what he has done with Yakupov is disgusting. Im not going to completely let Yak off the hook, he isn't playing great but he was our leading goal scorer last year, and for some reason Krueger could get the most out of him. Eakins likes his Marlie boys and he really likes Smyth. I guess this is what bothers me most. He keeps putting Smyth out in situations where he doesn't belong. I thought Smyth wasn't in the long term plans. Thid team is a joke.

To all intents and purposes, Training Camp for 2014-2015 season starts now.

The first proper step in building a team (I refuse to use "re") is to prune the tree and clear out the deadwood. For whatever reasons the past Oilers management groups have been strangely reluctant to do this (remember carrying THREE goaltenders so that JDD wouldn't be exposed to waivers -- really?)While MacTavish seems more willing to say goodbye than Lowe or Tambo, he still re-signed Jones.

The last 3/4 of this season needs to be used to -- rather ruthlessly -- determine the relative value of every player/prospect under contract. So shuffle 'em back and forth to OKC, give everyone a look, and for love's sake, put those who fall short on the next ice flow out of here. There is absolutely no reason for a team that is in the bottom 1-5 spots to be anywhere near this close to either the cap or the 50 contract limit.

OK then let's build this team. Let's identify some untouchable players, i.e. Hall, Eberle & the Nuge. Let's add Petry and maybe Justin S. Let's keep a few seasoned guys such as Ference and ... damn. That's it. Let's garage sale the ass of this organization now. Tonight forecast: dallas win by 3 goals, Seguin looks real sharp by outplaying every Oilers, Horcoff scores a goal, Gonchar looks like a Dman that we could use and Hall cries himself to bed tonight.

I will throw in my 2 cents on the PP. Much of it has been said already. RNH below the goal line running things from there, another soft hands setup/passer type Defensemen on the left point Yak on the right half wall where RNH is now, Smyth in front of the net & either Hall or Eberle at the right point.

I'm no NHL coach & didn't play a high level of hockey but it really couldn't do any worse could it.

Not putting 64 on that 5 on 3 looks outright punitive. He may not be a great defensive player but he can shoot the puck like no one else on that team or many teams for that matter.

It might hold a little more water when the coaching staff is sitting him & saying that they are just putting him in positions to succeed when they limit his ice time if they actually use him where he suits better than anybody else on the bench.

as much as we like to call Stu MacGregor "The Magnificent Bastard", he and his staff's draft record from the 2nd round on during his tenure here has been piss poor, and maybe it's time to refresh that position as well. what did it for me this year was the fact that the Oilers once again didn't draft a goalie when the prospect pool appeared to be fairly deep and the drafting of Aidan Muir and Evan Campbell (who?) too early in my opinion, when they likely would have been there for the taking by the end of the draft (and even if they weren't, who cares?), all the while letting Greg Chase sit on the board for anyone to take when we appeared to be interested in him. i personally am getting a little tired of Stu's B.C. league gambles.

It's really baffling.

stupid Montreal just took Fucale one pick before us to keep us from getting him! but I have been the biggest critics of the Oilers not taking just ONE measly goalie in the last two drafts, especially when there were other potential NHL calibre goalies in the draft like Jarry, Comrie and Martin. can't figure out why they didn't just take Jarry after losing out on Fucale, but I thought for sure they were going to take either Comrie or Spencer Martin with the pick right after Marco Roy was taken, but they just kept trading down for lower percentage players...but to be fair, the Oilers have tried and tried to draft a potential NHL goalie, but haven't had success yet with Roy (traded now), Bunz, Tuohiima, and Perhonen (gone). I have heard from the media in the past that the Oilers may prefer to just sign an established NHL goalie than try to develop one.

Trading one of the few defensemen we had that would block shots (Smid) in return for the proverbial bag of pucks/prospect makes one wonder about MacT's judgement.

Lowe should have been long gone.

Calgary at least plays a system and works hard and the only question is whether Calgary or Edmonton finish last in the Division. My bet is that as long as Eakins is coach, it will be Edmonton.

As to Yak, he will be great in time, but unfortunately not here with the coach we have.

Yeah they also hired a proven NHL coach who has won the Stanley Cup. Not a know-it-all AHL $hitty coach that actually doesn't know f*ck all!

I really hope Yakupov goes to the KHL then signs with another team in the NHL.

The coach says he needs to earn his time. That's rich. And moreover, a false argument.

Nobody is saying Yakupov doesn't need to earn his icetime.

Yakupov feels he is being singled out, and from what I've seen, I don't blame him.

After scoring a goal in Chicago, he was benched the rest of the game.

No time on the 3 on 5 last night.

Sure. He's a defensive liability, but who isn't? Did you see Hemsky's giveaway? Eakins is applying a different set of standards to him.

Why did we ever fire Tom Renney?

I didn't really like Renney, but I was dead against them firing him because if you were to fire him and the team still sucks, well then you have to fire even more coaches and then well you get this.

And make no mistake Tambelini was getting preasure from Lowe to make the playoffs asap, hence the early firing of Renney. Tambelini wasn't really the type of guy to make a "bold" move like that unless he was forced too.
