I know this is petty, we're better than that and it's a small victory. There is absolutely no way it's going to be enough, the season is an out of control train and beating one bad team counts for zero in real life.

Don't care. Whatever else happens, beat Calgary.

AS IT STANDS

The team is 1-5-0 at home, 3-8-2 on the road and 2-7-1 in their last 10. They have so many holes defensively the mind boggles, and the mood of the city is toxic. Into that atmosphere the Oilers have to score early, get the crowd behind them and improve that home record in a big way.

The two teams (Calgary and Edmonton) are both 2-7-1 in the last 10, and the Oilers can close the gap to three points tonight (Calgary will have two games in hand). Their first 10 games (3-6-1) were better than the next nine games (1-7-1 entering tonight) but it's also true tonight's game is only their 7th at home all season. That could make a difference if they take advantage of last change, and the Rexall crowd needs to cheer like mad, too.

COME ON, MAN

The goals for is no screaming hell, but that GA total is ghastly. If the Oilers are going to get anything done this season--and we're not asking for much--then the goals against total must go down. At their current pace, the club is on track to allow 324 goals, the highest total for an Oilers team since 1992-93, their black hole season.

WHAT HAVE YOU DONE FOR ME, LATELY

The offense lost both Taylor Hall and David Perron for extended periods during the last 10 games, and Justin Schultz was ineffective/injured. Oilers used 28 position players during the last 10 games.

Holy mackerel, that's a lot of goals against!

WHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN?

This team needs to focus on the detail work, the defensive chores, the scut work. They need to catch Calgary. After that, they can find another target.

I think we'll finish the season 25th overall and pick 6th overall, so the Oilers can feel free to trade the pick in a draft that early on at least doesn't seem as deep as last year's. (unless Ekblad is still there at #6, then keep and pick.)

@Walter Sobchak

Read any of the drafting reports and you can always find the top rated prospect, no skill required. However, the skill in drafting is in the lower rounds and how have our scouts/management done in this area compared to the elite teams- p……poor!

Strength down the centre,(RNH but no centre with any size),.

We just haven't picked well for goalies at all and the existing defence is v weak (Petry, Schultz, Belov, Ference are all 3, 4, 5, 6 (no 1.2's on the team)

Jury is out on some of the young defencemen (Marinicin. Klefbom, etc. )in the minors but they do show some promise, keep them away from Eakins and they may be fine in the future.

Not drafting one of those goalies you mention, then trading our prospect for another one is a lateral move, it doesn't make sense.....at all.

Then to just give Smid away blows my mind.

keep in mind that Smid appears to be a salary dump so we could free up cash to sign Breezy, hence the low return for him.

Also, darnell nurse is killing it. Can't wait for him and Connor Mcdavid to save our franchise.

Can you handle the drug we call Oilers for another year after this one to draft Conor McDavid? Too bad they can't give him exceptional player status to draft him a year early. Especially since Buffalo has fired their head coach and GM and will probably get on a hot streak to lift them up and past the Oilers.

Good post, The Oilers don't need any tough Dmen, that would make them to hard to play against. I know lets keep Belov, a soft player that can't get points playing cream puff power play minutes and will be gone in a year. Oh ya but we got a 6' 170 pound center iceman for Smid, geez we don't have any of those guys. This Oiler organization is a 5 RING circus

It won't happen but I would just do the same as Buffalo did. The city shouldn't have agreed to the arena and let Katz sell the team and change entirely the management up to the owners! That would have really change the team culture.

5 on 3 PP ... Eakins put all one's eggs in the same basket!

Eberle, RNH, Perron, all like to hold on to the puck and set the play ... when one of them have the puck the rest doesn't move at all. Too stationary and no screening.

And then the only real sniper, Hall, plays down low !! I get it, he's the best among them to play in the scrum but who's going to shoot it ?!

Everyone knows RNH isn't going to shoot, even he should because he shoot with precision. Maybe not a quick release like Yak and Hall but remember his first year. He got to mixte it to become a threat again. He lookes like someone who forgot his natural talent and just do what the coach says like a robot.. or a troll !

And Yakupov gets no time on the PP. Don't you want him to be successful and not cost you a goal ? Then PP is the best moment. Low risk and he gets more time to do what he is best at.

Everyone know Oilers are missing a Simmonds like, the one that could grind and wins battle, that plays hard in front of the net, that doesnt hold on too long to the puck. Then why not using Joensuu on the PP ? Or even Smyth.

I don't get it. True Im not a career coach but I feel like they have to take one step at the time and the first one should be the PP. This is where they get confidence back, where they get their chemistry back. You got to be successful somewhere in order to turn things around. Not trying to do all at once.

Anyway ... lots of frustration but still love that team!

*Lots of Habs fans in the west but also lots of Oils fans in the east ;)

This team is pathetic, where's the effort, I'm going to cancel my cable so I have no choice but to spend the quality hours I have after work doing something that's meaningful, not watch a bunch of losers skate around the ice.

After years of suffering through this crap I'm sick of it. Dare I say, I wish shawn ethan and Jason were back running this team because who ever leads it now sucks.

sell the farm and lets start another rebuild, this time will draft big skill.

I will throw in my 2 cents on the PP. Much of it has been said already. RNH below the goal line running things from there, another soft hands setup/passer type Defensemen on the left point Yak on the right half wall where RNH is now, Smyth in front of the net & either Hall or Eberle at the right point.

I'm no NHL coach & didn't play a high level of hockey but it really couldn't do any worse could it.

Not putting 64 on that 5 on 3 looks outright punitive. He may not be a great defensive player but he can shoot the puck like no one else on that team or many teams for that matter.

It might hold a little more water when the coaching staff is sitting him & saying that they are just putting him in positions to succeed when they limit his ice time if they actually use him where he suits better than anybody else on the bench.

The special teams have been much better over the last 8 games despite last night's 0/5 on the PP. Even including last night, the Oilers have been 25% on the PP and 94.1% on the PK in the last 8 games outscoring their opponents 6-2.

Unfortunately, the same issue of bad 5-on-5 play is a theme we have seen the last few seasons. They have been outscored 27-7 at even strength over the same 8 games.

Its time for change!!

If the core of the team is Nuge, Hall, Eberle with there long term deals it is time to support them.

Since we cannot seem to sign quality free agents it is time to strategically build a team around those three and their strengths and weaknesses. Every other player is expendable.

I realize that Mac T will be getting terrible return on any trades he tries to make because of the situation, but he needs to make the BOLD moves promised giving more value with our draft picks than getting in return.

Gagner, Hemsky, 2014 1st Pick Top 5, J Schultz or Petry, D Prospect (Gernat, Klefbom)

Stalberg, Weber, Forward Prospect, Conditional 2nd Round Pick

Is a thought if Nashville would even consider it. I think they might with all the talented young d they have and lack of offensive touch.

This season is a wash so lets build for next. I wouldn't stop there. Every draft pick we have is available for next 3 years (hang onto 2015 1st just in case we lose again and can get Mcdavid)Revamp the whole team keeping our core 3-5 players and go. Look at the turn around Montreal has had after completely demolishing there team.

Most important K Lowe has to resign. If change is to be seen and players are to believe in management change needs to start at the top and bring in a new culture. Just my thoughts as a die hard fan how is sick to his stomach but will not stop believing in the orange and blue.

With that said, Yak should have been on the ice for the 5 on 3. Eakins was being an idiot with that setup, and thinks we're idiots when he comes out after the game and said their setup was 'close' to what he wants.

And how bad would the Oilers love to have Penner!

as much as we like to call Stu MacGregor "The Magnificent Bastard", he and his staff's draft record from the 2nd round on during his tenure here has been piss poor, and maybe it's time to refresh that position as well. what did it for me this year was the fact that the Oilers once again didn't draft a goalie when the prospect pool appeared to be fairly deep and the drafting of Aidan Muir and Evan Campbell (who?) too early in my opinion, when they likely would have been there for the taking by the end of the draft (and even if they weren't, who cares?), all the while letting Greg Chase sit on the board for anyone to take when we appeared to be interested in him. i personally am getting a little tired of Stu's B.C. league gambles.

How hard is it to evaluate scouts? Before each draft they must have lists of what order they'd take players. These lists can be compared over the next several years against each players success to see whether the scout actually had it right or if they were way off.

Is it not possible to turf scouts who are consistently clueless or who champion players who turn out to be duds? Can you not find and promote those scouts who show tremendous insight into what players are diamonds in the rough?

At this point I'll take a goal. Good defense. Goaltending and maybe if were really good Santa will bring us a PP goal. Its no longer about winning this season. Its now about re-educating these players on how to play without the puck. All 23 of them.

I have no problem with his line of questioning of yak. My problem with him and all of the other gutless wonders in the EDM sports journo market is that they have not point blank asked Eakins anything about what he promised to do at the outset:

1. Make them a team that out competes the opponent every single night

2. Be the fittest team in the league

3. Meet one on one daily with every single player (he said he hadn't talked to nail for some time.)

NONE of those things have happened.

If we don't have a physical defensive specialist on both of the top lines we will never win with this core. I hope Nuge can get better defensively and focus more on that part of his game. Offense be damned. Hall will take care of that.

Missed the game. Probably for the best. How long does it take for Katz to drop the hammer on these guys? Does Katz even care?? Maybe this is is his plan so he can move the team, just let them suck for 10 more years. I can't for the life of me find any other reason as to why the "President of Hockey Operations" still has a job when the team is in the toilet for this long. If Lowe isn't gone soon its obvious that Katz cares only about money and not winning. The games will keep selling out win or lose. Lowe has to strike gold eventually right? He did it once before. Not likely again at this rate.

Clean house. Get Krueger back here with Mact on the bench for now. Search long and hard for a GM and coaches with competence and ditch that useless "President of Hockey Operations" position that no team needs anyway.

I bought into the rebuild at first but the string of bad moves is getting ridiculous. So many coaches and GMs. Half the team is new players every year. Our favorite players probably just want outta here and that hurts pretty bad. Hurts even more gearing up for a second rebuild after enduring the last one.

Lets not get too uptight! The owner of the Oilers has proven to be a succesful buisness man. All we can hope for is that he as I would believe is annalizeing the situation and probably about ready to drop the hatchet. For us fans time is of essence. To resell us fans things have to change. He would be looking at the two yo yo,s that are directly responsible for the situation his investment is in. Dallas Aekins is comparable to Nail Yakopov. They are both rookies in the NHL and if they are going to suceed, need motivation as do the rest of the team.
