I know this is petty, we're better than that and it's a small victory. There is absolutely no way it's going to be enough, the season is an out of control train and beating one bad team counts for zero in real life.

Don't care. Whatever else happens, beat Calgary.

AS IT STANDS

The team is 1-5-0 at home, 3-8-2 on the road and 2-7-1 in their last 10. They have so many holes defensively the mind boggles, and the mood of the city is toxic. Into that atmosphere the Oilers have to score early, get the crowd behind them and improve that home record in a big way.

The two teams (Calgary and Edmonton) are both 2-7-1 in the last 10, and the Oilers can close the gap to three points tonight (Calgary will have two games in hand). Their first 10 games (3-6-1) were better than the next nine games (1-7-1 entering tonight) but it's also true tonight's game is only their 7th at home all season. That could make a difference if they take advantage of last change, and the Rexall crowd needs to cheer like mad, too.

COME ON, MAN

The goals for is no screaming hell, but that GA total is ghastly. If the Oilers are going to get anything done this season--and we're not asking for much--then the goals against total must go down. At their current pace, the club is on track to allow 324 goals, the highest total for an Oilers team since 1992-93, their black hole season.

WHAT HAVE YOU DONE FOR ME, LATELY

The offense lost both Taylor Hall and David Perron for extended periods during the last 10 games, and Justin Schultz was ineffective/injured. Oilers used 28 position players during the last 10 games.

Holy mackerel, that's a lot of goals against!

WHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN?

This team needs to focus on the detail work, the defensive chores, the scut work. They need to catch Calgary. After that, they can find another target.

Makes me think of bugs bunny, have we hit China yet? Oh wait maybe we'll find the land that time forgot. Maybe kBlowe would be so kind to release the combination of prescription painkillers + favorite thirst quencher he uses to watch these games and we might all enjoy them. This has gone from sad to embarrassing.

God I do miss the days of Slats throwing sticks on the ice, screaming at the top of his lungs at refs, opposition and especially his own team. How many guys do you see come to the bench and try to sit next to the backup goalie. It was one of the few "safe" places on the bench back then.

I need someone to remind me how the oilers had to trade smid for salary cap reasons. Capgeek says they have $5,683,467 in space today so I don't get the timing of the smid trade. I guess they just have too many NHL quality dmen who are tough and block shots . Honestly, if they feel he is just a bottom pairing guy next year trade him in the off season. I just can't see how you wouldn't be able to trade him for magic beans at that time.

Yup. True that. 100% correct. Here here. Yak is a trigger man. The gunslinger. Coaches are there to find the best fit, use what they've got. I understand that many of our players need to develop but they're just being ran into the ground. Eakins is trying to turn them into something they're not.

Good luck, Edmonton Oilers, version 2013. I'm out.

Well, Dubnyk played well enough to win, the defense was decent [except Petry], but these were not the duds, it was the studs up front that could not pull it off. Cant even score on 5 on 3. They cant even remember when the last time was they scored at home... joke.

The scary part is that Oilers haven't even started to play the West. You know the conference that plays a more physical and structured style of play.

Unless the team competes harder and wins more puck battles, the next 20 games may be as ugly as the previous 20.

Since scoring the opening goal against the Habs a few weeks ago the Oil have been outscored on home ice by a 20-1 margin. Surely that must be some kind of record. The Habs scored the next 4, and since then the boys have lost 4-1, 4-0, 5-0 and 3-0 (to the Caps, Leafs, Wings and Stars) in front of their long suffering home fans. The only goal, for trivia buffs, was scored by Justin Schultz in front of a half empty building with just over 2 minutes left against the Caps, who were up 4-0, so there was only a ripple of polite applause. That consolation marker is the only chance season ticket holders have had to cheer in 4 games and two periods.

Like my buddy, Doug the Slug, I have been going to Oil games since the late WHA days and this is easily the lowest point I have experienced. There is no simple solution as the problems begin at the top and go right through the organization. The worst defence corps in the league, the worst team save percentage, The worst defensive coverage I have ever seen, the least physical players ever on an Oiler team, A total lack of gritty goals, abominable coaching from Eakins and the assistants, a gift by MacT of Smid to Calgary for essentially nothing and on and on and on.

This is a train wreck. When Dubnyk is hot, like tonight, we can't score. When the boys are scoring he can't stop a beach ball. We obviously have a terrible mix of skills on our top two lines and desperately need at least one legitimate top pairing D man and there are none in sight. Klefbom is hardly tearing up the AHL and Nurse looks very promising but at best will be a difference maker in a few years, and you can't even count on that.

As a long time season ticket holder I have no plans to stop coming to the games, but it increasingly feels like I am paying a pretty good price to suffer. I missed the Jersey game, so I haven't even seen a win. I have a friend who comes to a fair amount of games and hasn't seen a win since the 2011-12 season. Honest. Obviously major, major changes are necessary but where do you begin? Kevin Lowe. Yes. Eakins? Yes. All the assistant coaches? Yes. MacT is in trouble, but for now at least should get to stay but the entire league is licking their chops to deal with him, knowing he is desperate and has no leverage. Plus our recent first overall pick is eyeing greener pastures and maybe even the KHL.

Can it get any darker? I don't know. I think when you start gauging the top players in the upcoming draft before the first month of the season is over you must have hit bottom. Sorry for venting but that's all we have left right now. This too shall pass, but God only knows when.

This team needs a weekend in Las Vegas. A voodoo priest and case of Rum. This team need to get rid of all the bad juju that is attracted to these players. There is some kind of unexplainable mumbo jumbo affecting these guys. Their sticks are cursed. Its time to bring in some voodoo dude to remove the stain of futility surrounding this team.I am for trying anything because the current state of affairs is not getting any better.

I have never in all my days on God's green Earth have ever seen the Oilers shut out 3 games in a row at home. It's mindboggling. Its in the realm of impossible. Never happen. But lookee lookee it has happened.

We have sucked hind teat for how many season's to watch as the Oilers go 0/6 on the PP. Get a 5 on 3 and get 1 shot. WTF? At some point Dallas Eakin's is going to have to admit that the system is hooped.

We bitched and moaned about the goaltending. DD was fine. 1 goal allowed. In Chicago he saved their butt's. Now we have a goal outage. Huh? At some point we'll score again at home. It might even be against San Jose. Whether we win or not I don't care. Really I don't.

At this point I'll take a goal. Good defense. Goaltending and maybe if were really good Santa will bring us a PP goal. Its no longer about winning this season. Its now about re-educating these players on how to play without the puck. All 23 of them.

Missed the game. Probably for the best. How long does it take for Katz to drop the hammer on these guys? Does Katz even care?? Maybe this is is his plan so he can move the team, just let them suck for 10 more years. I can't for the life of me find any other reason as to why the "President of Hockey Operations" still has a job when the team is in the toilet for this long. If Lowe isn't gone soon its obvious that Katz cares only about money and not winning. The games will keep selling out win or lose. Lowe has to strike gold eventually right? He did it once before. Not likely again at this rate.

Clean house. Get Krueger back here with Mact on the bench for now. Search long and hard for a GM and coaches with competence and ditch that useless "President of Hockey Operations" position that no team needs anyway.

I bought into the rebuild at first but the string of bad moves is getting ridiculous. So many coaches and GMs. Half the team is new players every year. Our favorite players probably just want outta here and that hurts pretty bad. Hurts even more gearing up for a second rebuild after enduring the last one.

I really hope Yakupov goes to the KHL then signs with another team in the NHL.

The coach says he needs to earn his time. That's rich. And moreover, a false argument.

Nobody is saying Yakupov doesn't need to earn his icetime.

Yakupov feels he is being singled out, and from what I've seen, I don't blame him.

After scoring a goal in Chicago, he was benched the rest of the game.

No time on the 3 on 5 last night.

Sure. He's a defensive liability, but who isn't? Did you see Hemsky's giveaway? Eakins is applying a different set of standards to him.

as much as we like to call Stu MacGregor "The Magnificent Bastard", he and his staff's draft record from the 2nd round on during his tenure here has been piss poor, and maybe it's time to refresh that position as well. what did it for me this year was the fact that the Oilers once again didn't draft a goalie when the prospect pool appeared to be fairly deep and the drafting of Aidan Muir and Evan Campbell (who?) too early in my opinion, when they likely would have been there for the taking by the end of the draft (and even if they weren't, who cares?), all the while letting Greg Chase sit on the board for anyone to take when we appeared to be interested in him. i personally am getting a little tired of Stu's B.C. league gambles.

How hard is it to evaluate scouts? Before each draft they must have lists of what order they'd take players. These lists can be compared over the next several years against each players success to see whether the scout actually had it right or if they were way off.

Is it not possible to turf scouts who are consistently clueless or who champion players who turn out to be duds? Can you not find and promote those scouts who show tremendous insight into what players are diamonds in the rough?

Too many players that play exactly the same way. You need guys like Toews in your top six. Period. If we don't have a physical defensive specialist on both of the top lines we will never win with this core. I hope Nuge can get better defensively and focus more on that part of his game. All we can hope for is that he as I would believe is annalizeing the situation and probably about ready to drop the hatchet. For us fans time is of essence. To resell us fans things have to change. He would be looking at the two yo yo,s that are directly responsible for the situation his investment is in. Dallas Aekins is comparable to Nail Yakopov. They are both rookies in the NHL and if they are going to suceed, need motivation as do the rest of the team.
