PHIL THE THRILL

The Edmonton Oilers recalled Phil Larsen yesterday, and he may play today (photo by Rob Ferguson, all rights reserved). We know he came over from Dallas in the Shawn Horcoff deal, but what else do we know?

THE LARSEN FILE

Phil Larsen has significant NHL experience (95 games) for such a young man and he does bring some nice things with him from Oklahoma City

That puck moving ability is probably what made MacT notice him and likely one of the main reasons for recall. He's a very nice option at this point in the year, Oilers haven't had this kind of defensive depth in forever (I'd say last century sometime).

He is currently 7, 1-6-7 for the Barons, which ranks him 3rd in team scoring.

THE VOLLMAN SLEDGHAMMER

This shows us that he played very low (easiest available) competition but did have more severe zone starts than most of the other young blue (Dillon is a freak).

I'd suggest Larsen is a fringe type based on the current resume, in the range with Corey Potter as an NHL player. One other item: his last full season (non-lockout) was pretty darn good:

He was playing easy opps but he was in the blue bubble doing it--that's exactly where you want your young defensemen. Good enough to play the easy opponent at sea level, and then you see if they can take on more difficult competition. It would appear as though Larsen struggled and or was passed by more capable players.

WHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN?

Climbing the hill to NHL regular status is a tough damn deal. Phil Larsen may get a chance to resume his NHL career tonight. His back story is encouraging--he's played the 5-6D role before in the NHL and showed well.

Can he do it for an injury riddled Oiler club? We're about to find out.

Ya but that truck could make that hill if only he threw some chains on. So in other words if Larsen adds a little bite to his game he'll make the hill fulltime.

Since he passed through waivers I think he was just a cash dump from Dallas to offset Horcoff's contract.

At first I did agree with you that I did like all our defensive depth, but now as all the "depth" has passed through waivers unclaimed by 29 teams, I think it shows just how bad that the Oiler's defense is

If that truck was like the Oilers it would have rolled over, caught on fire, and the driver would have sustained a season-ending knee injury.

I would rather see Larsen get an opportunity than seeing more product that we already know is not good enough.

Yup, anyway you "CORSI" it the Oiler's still have a player on their blueline that 29 other teams didn't want........that fact trumps the hell out CORSI!

Only if there was a giant explosion at the end.

Seriously, though, I'm glad to see that the Oilers are trying to make some room for the pile of young defensemen that are clogging up the prospect pipes down in OKC. It will be nice to see what some of these guys can do.

I think that given the statistical improbability of actually making the playoffs this year, the blueline auditions for next year should start now. Klefbom, Marincin, Larsen and Fedun should all get extended looks at the NHL level to see what, if anything, the Oilers have in them. That way maybe we can avoid some of the JShultz-esque chaos with the rookie defenders next year.

If that truck was the Oilers, it would have had a million people behind it pushing, and it still would have exploded as soon as the front wheel touched the hill.

I like the puck moving skills that PL brings but I can't help but think,......this player looks like the neighbourhood kid that keeps asking if he can shovel your driveway.

I'm certain that he is one body check away from being on the IR. He can't be more than 150 lbs.........RNH looks like Milan Lucic next to him.

Just where do find these giants?

I said the same thing in the last article too. The Oilers need more "crust" more "truculence".

Jones(lately) and Kaleta in the top 9 would be great!

I'm curious LT, I've heard great reviews on Fedun so far, how come he didn't get the call and Larsen did?

Not tryin to knock on Larsen, I just thought Fedun would have got a call up before Larsen.

Dont you know edmontons history? If a player is in a goal scoring drought-play the oilers. Teams on a record losing streak- play the oilers. Rookie goalie needs first win- play the oilers.

Build his confidence with our power play, net presence, rocket slapper from the point and the muffin wristers from the sidewall.

If you think our defense is completely to blame, you are wrong, they are being taught to pinch and have a forward come back to cover for them and help cycle the puck and keep pressure. but that doesn't happen because none of forwards know anything about defense. we need to blow up our lines.

trade a young gun or 2 for some big powerforwards and number one 2 in some blockbuster trades.

Plus if the visiting team is on a back to back on HNIC it is usually bad news for the Oil.

"Needs to add more strength so as to better adapt to the more physical style of the National Hockey League game, since he's undersized"

You must be joking. Do you think thé team in front of him had anything to do with him getting à Shotout. Total team défense great pressure by there forwards and size différence .Any rookie goalie would look good . Put one of our guys in net for detroit and see how many wins they get . Compare man for man between thé two teams in grit and you will see what i mean
