INFINITE UNHAPPINESS

Wanye
November 04 2013 12:05PM

It takes everything in our Jordan Eberle loving heart to come on here and write anything other than a 900 word swear parade. We had a very sombre Sunday indeed after the Oil decided to get shelled 5 squat after getting pumped 4 nothing earlier in the week.

There are no words to describe how bad things are at the moment. On a personal note we can't recall being this unhappy ever really. The comments section here at the Nation is melting with our fellow citizens venting fire and brimstone in every direction. People are getting clever with getting swear words on the site bypassing our naughty filters.

Originally we were going to delete them - but then thought better of it. There are times when swearing is completely appropriate. And with this All You Can Eat Crap Buffet we are being asked to enjoy for 7 years now why not let a few blue words out if it makes you feel better.

It breaks my heart to read comments like this as correct as they might be. And the 139 props from so many of our fellow Oilers fans that feel something is dying inside them too? Unbearable to read. OilersNation.com wasn't built for this.

It's the age of infinite unhappiness.

REMEMBER

You may find it ironic that this is the new NationGear design. Talking about Stanley Cups in Edmonton makes about as much sense as Lindsay Lohan keeping her schedule open on Oscar Night. But it is precisely now at the darkest moment that hope becomes so crucial.

Hope is one of the most important things we can have. If we believe that this is our lot in life - cheering our collective hearts out for a group of unperforming non caring trillionaires working for an organization that takes us all for granted then the sun will never rise again. The minute we feel that a current squad of losers is all we deserve the light of hope will be snuffed out forever.

We will never let hope die.

We would use this horrid Monday to remind everyone what the concept of the "Oilers" really means. Kevin Lowe is not the Oilers. MacT, Eakins and the rest of the Coaching staff aren't the Oilers. None of the players or Daryl Katz himself are the Oilers. They are merely the current crew piloting a ship that is far bigger and more important than any of their piddling efforts can destroy.

The Oilers are Fernando Pisani and Company bringing us to our feet in 2006 for one glorious spring. It's Doug Weight getting 104 point season back in 1996 blowing minds in the process. It's Cujo flying across the crease to rob Niewendyk in the playoffs. If you are old enough the Oilers are the glory filled 1980s. We are too young to remember them but we understand it was quite the time.

The concept of what being an Edmonton Oiler means might be lost on 75% of the people collecting cheques from Kay-Z but we must all keep our heads held high through this darkest time in franchise history if ever we are going to find our footing again. If this current iteration of players don't want to show up and compete they are free to leave. They are not Oilers and we refuse to acknowledge half of these crumbs going forward.

Being an Oilers fan is the aggregate of all the good times we have had with the team in our lives. The Oilers are the team that we would listen to as a kid on the radio late into the night before John Short would tuck us into bed. The Oilers are Dr Randy Gregg taking an 8 year old Wanye into the dressing room to meet his hero Craig Simpson who couldn't have been nicer.

The Oilers are a rookie Ryan Smyth talking to a 13 year old Wanye outside Rexall Place for a good 15 minutes when he must have had many better things to do. The Oilers are the team that played an OT playoff game during a high school dance that had the entire school watching the game on a tiny TV in the cafeteria while a confused DJ spun tunes for an empty gym.

This current squad is simply an unimportant chapter of a story that will outlive them all.

IRONY

It is some strange sort of a twist of fate that we picked the worst 6 year stretch in franchise history to make the Nation Network and commit a good part of our day to supporting the team. We can't stand the Oilers at the moment but our love for OilersNation grows by the day.

We have made so many friends all around the world from this site and reading the tweets and comments of all these folks we have come to know over the past 6 years is heartbreaking. But it is some small mercy at least we still have each other to talk to in an uncensored environment that is telling it like it is.  A place for top drawer fans that deserve so much better than what we are currently getting.

Fans like Mr and Mrs Towelboy who came in from Lloydminster to take their lovely daughter to her first Oilers game on Saturday night. Driving for hours in the hope that they will give their kid a night she will remember fondly in years to come. The minute folks like this say "yeah it's probably not worth sacrificing the weekend to see the Oilers get pumped" we are all screwed.

They deserve more.

AN OATH

We actually considered taking some time off from the Nation yesterday. We don't intend to be some voice in a chorus of negativity screaming and yelling about how crappy everything is. But there is something deep inside us that believes a better day is on the horizon that prevents us from quitting. So we will slog on even if the divide between the actual Oilers and OilersNation increases by the hour.

We have been saving free vehicle stickers for a few weeks now hoping something awesome would happen and then we could drop them in celebration. But it seems as though that day is far off in the distance for the time being. In any event our friends at Auto Canada have partnered to distribute awesome free vehicle stickers. You can click here to order them for pickup or delivery depending on your locale - completely free.

Cop these stickers Nation and rep them proudly. Most people with a functioning brainstem would take one look at this team and say "I wonder what's showing on HBO right now?" Luckily we are made of tougher stuff. We are Oilers fans.

And if you want to drop some money on hope - with a portion of the proceeds going to our friends at the ICCP - go buy some NationGear here. Hope must never die no matter how dire things seem.

Meanwhile in Pittsburgh....

Great article. Almost brought tears to my eyes(seriously). For me this all boils down to effort/determination/will etc. I see what should be the sad sack Flames play their guts out night in night out. And it irks me to my soul. This was supposed to be the Oilers this year?! And yet these players act like they dont give a crap! As a fan I didnt expect a Cup this year. Hell I didnt even expect playoffs this year. I did expect this team to show the desire to win. Honestly winning or losing is irrelevant if my team is giving it all. I will always remain an Oiler fan.. But this version of the Oilers i'm looking at this year has no recognizeable qualities from the past Oiler teams that made me the fan i am.

I think this is what is making it difficult for some fans; false expectations.

The worst thing Lowe and MacT did in the off-season was start talking about winning.

This was never going to be the Oilers year. Not in the sense of being a true contender mentioned with Pit, Chi, LA and Bos. Look at the roster. Not a chance.

Best case scenario would have seen the Oilers rise to 7th or 8th. They would have been pasted in the first round but the experience and exposure to just how intense playoff hockey is would have been valuable.

Unfortunate circumstances with key injuries on a team that lacks depth, young players learning new systems and new responsibilities ended up with the Oilers doing a face plant to start the season. Now they are shell shocked.

So this year won't be best case. Unlike many fans I'm fine with that. Maybe it's because I expected the Oilers to struggle to start the season.

The Oilers won't finish 29th or 30th; sorry for all those campaigning for a lottery pick already. They'll finish 20-24th and end up with a top 10 pick which can be used for another D like Nurse or a power F.

The plan (and yes I use that term loosely with the Oilers) is for the core to be ready to contend in 2-3 years.

This year was always about answering questions. Is Dubnyk good enough? Gordon was a nice addition...are any of the other 7-14 F good enough? What holes need to be filled on the blueline?

We're getting those answer and MacT will have to act accordingly but it won't happen overnight. It took 2-3 weeks for Phi to pry Steve Downie out of Col. The players the Oilers need are much tougher deals than that.

In the meantime, the young kids need to learn to play 200 ft hockey. And no, it won't be pretty at times. It wasn't pretty when Bylsma first threw Crosby on the PK either. They'll learn and they will be better.

@Wanye

From the sounds of that article, I believe we went to the same High School Wanye.

I've been to a few places around this globe and have enjoyed sport every where I go. Having been a former Seahawks season ticket holder, lived a block from the Bell Centre, a block from Rogers Arena (I loath the Nucks) and been to see Palmeiras in Sao Paulo, there's one thing I can say about Edmonton Oilers fans:

These are the best fans in sports. Classy. Patient. Loyal. These are fans that will cheer through thick and thin. The copper & blue means much more than Gretzky & Messier to us. We don't riot and destroy when our team loses, we celebrate in pure jubilation when the team does well.

I'll always have the hope deep in my heart. This current edition of the Oilers garners little interest from me now, but I'd be glad to give some love if the players show that they want it.

This undeserving team has the best fans in sports, and they have the nerve to be a cap team that plays like one of the worst teams in North American Sports (their playoff record of the past 20 years would be an example).

We come from a place with an amazing work ethic. This has aided me in my career wherever I go. Sadly the current edition of the Oilers doens't have this work ethic. I do appreciate Eakins appreciation of haute-fitness though I'm disappointed at his lack of a tough-love approach. Unfortunately it seems like the Flames current edition has the good 'ol Alberta work ethic. I wish that was my team..

Thanks for this Wayne, it really put a lot of thing in perspective. Your line "The Oilers are the team that we would listen to as a kid on the radio late into the night before John Short would tuck us into bed" is priceless. I remember when I was a little kid staying up late listening to John Short with the volume down so my dad couldn't hear it and get pissed off.

I remember cheering for those awful pre-Gretz WHA teams and never dreaming the would one day hoist the cup.

Many moons ago.

Wow. I didn't expect an article about hockey to make me have Deep Thoughts, but here we are.

I'm thinking about how hockey. for me, was always so tied to my dad, and how Oilers' decline has sort of foretold the decline of my relationship with him.

I grew up in a hockey-watching house, but only started seriously watching in my late teens/early 20s and a big part of it was that it was something I could share with him. We weren`t close when I was a kid or a teenager, he worked lots, I dated boys he didn`t like, no one`s fault. Suddenly we had something in common.

My dad was with me in 2006 on Jasper Ave after one of the final round wins. Then things went south and never really recovered. Now I`m at a crossroads, like you, where I`m trying to figure out how we go on, and if I even want to. Your post has me thinking about lost causes and hope.

Sorry, this comment is probably kind of weird and heavy! This was really well written and I`m glad it`s getting shared widely. I hope you stay an Oilers` fan. I`m pretty sure you will.

Maybe DE has it right but needs to go the rest of the way...that is relieving some of the artifacts from the past glory days out of the room.

Management seems to revel with how many rings "we've won" but sports is a Now business.

Fact is this is results-based business and in E-Town they arent even close. Combine that with a holier than thou/apathetic/antagonistic attitude toward the directly supportive (and secondary tier) fan base (Oil Management words not mine btw) and the current status and immediate future outlook does not look good. Try connecting with Patrick or Kevin or anyone else from the leadership group and its all only to benefit the Oil.

Im beginning to take on the perspective of DougtheSlug. Last Tuesday was the first time ever that I was ready to depart the building with over 10 minutes left in the third before the 50/50 was drawn. Uninspired, uninterested, unbearable and unsure is ways to describe their play and state. Sad indeed.

Unfortunately the current roster and talent is going to have to own this -- MacT's only out is to trade a core player to get IMMEDIATE help and this trade will have to be one where the Oil have clearly bettered the current team. Anything less is an epic fair. Trouble is our talent is selling low at this point in time. Senior management changes and changes in the talent evaluation pool solves some symptoms. And Eakins cant be hung out for this one. If any coaching changes are to occur its getting rid of the Assistants who are part of SeriousGord's crony club.

When I was a kid, coming towards the end of the glory days, I moved away. Then I moved back for about a year in 1990-1991. At that time, all of my classmate friends who collected hockey cards and stuff (actually stickers at that time) were not interested in the Oilers ones. Those were the throwaways.

I can't imagine what we'd think of the current Oilers. Like ... Throw away and burn the house down that the garbage bin was in...

Everything you just said was an opinion... and judging by your statement, that automatically means no one should consider your opinion seriously, since it's "(snort) nothing more than opinion". Galchenyuk turned out great, but the reason the Oilers didn't pick him up was because it was a risky one; why take a risk with a player who had been injured for such a long time and not go for the player who was indeed consensus #1 pick? The issue now is whether we trade him for other needs. The problem is, his value is at an extreme low; so it's a lose-lose situation. Might I add that we could have drafted any of those players first, and I'd wager that they would have turned out just as poorly as Yakupov has shown so far. A lot of it is the team and the support cast around the player as they grow and mature into a NHL player. The Oilers, sadly, lack that support.

The problem with your analysis is that I am right and you're wrong.

The Oilers went with conventional wisdom (although it appears Katz meddled in the decision).

You can argue til your blue in the face that Galchenyuk would have been as crappy as Yakupov but there is ZERO evidence to support that claim.

The problem is, as you've identified, that Yakupov has very limited value based on his play and his inability or unwillingness to play a two way game.

Funny that RNH, under similar circumstances and with even less in the way of "support cast" would have pretty good value in a trade.

Bottom line is Yakupov isn't a very good hockey hockey player, sadly.

The link at the end made me smile. You are, of course, right Wanye, it is the idea of the oilers that should be remembered, not this cheap excuse that Katz has put in front of us now. I find myself forgetting that and becoming inconsolable at times, whew, man I love the Oil too much, gotta loosen the grip and just enjoy hockey for awhile. No more oilers games for me! Not until they win a couple in a row.

I haven't made a comment in some time. I still read the comments and all the articles. Most times I am so pissed and dis-heartened that I feel that any comment is just negative. I don't want to contribute to the negativity, but thats seems the only thing there is to say. So let's be honest with ourselves, this Franchise is a joke. It's so bad my friends tease me that the Oilers are now called the "Coilers". I can't dis-agree. The route of this problem starts with Katz and his love of the old oiler bastards running this team. K. Lowe's comments at the hiring of Mac T say it all. Ignorant, delusional, cocky pride based on years gone bye. And now they hired Messier! For what. Katz has got to get rid off all the old Oilers, And give Eakins and the team legit experienced managers and assistant coaches to help the players. Trade the players with no passion, and finally use some of our acquired assets like Yakipov for a true 1-2 defensemen. We don't need anymore offensive flash, we need the role players now, and Mac T just sits and waits for things to get worse. I will still remain a fan, but I feel like I am stuck in an emotionally abused marriage, just hoping for things to get better.

All I can say is that TRUE Oilers fans never give up hope. Believe me hope is very low right now but I still have it. It's whats going to get me to watch the Florida game and so on. What bothers me is how now oilers fans are turning on each other (really sad when I read the comments here lately). Also bothers me how kelly hrudey just spit fire about the oilers and telling the fans at home how to run a team and how sad our team is. I had friends turn the game off for me because they were tired of his mouth. Who the hell is he? He made the stanley cup once as far as i remember on the back of former oilers players. BANG! Bottom line is we should be coming together and supporting each other through these very hard times. Let's be honest Cubs fans have been doing it for a long, long, long time but there hope is always there. What's the excuse you have when you walk out on this team? No excuse will ever cut it when you have to look in the mirror and admit you gave up. I will bleed orange and blue FOR LIFE AND THEN SOME!

I remember the spring of 2006 with fond memories

I was in full tilt Oiler mode, I had turned 18 I was hitting the bars, watching the games and seeing something I had never seen in Edmonton.

Pride, I don't see any of it anywhere these days.

People wore they're colors and they wore them with pride, not today.

That team in 2006 had pride had confidence and they took it to game 7 of the finals.

How many people on here are proud to say I am from Edmonton or I cheer for the Oilers? I am, I still am, I am a die hard and I am gonna die hard to cheer for this team.

I have one request to all the players us fans will die hard for you, we just ask you go out there every night and give all you got.

You back check, you finish your checks, you fore check you be hard on the puck on and off it and just when you think you don't have it in you keep going that wins you games.

If you cannot do that this team and this fan base does not have time for you. Pride comes from confidence... confidence comes from success and success comes from hard work and not taking a single second of a shift off its balls to the walls hard skating hard checking 200 foot hockey from all 20 skaters on that bench.

Look , you people are hear to handle the dirty stuff and protect us , not us protect you . We play that way and we just get injured and minimize our offence . We are not all going to be like Toews , etc. with our makeup , at least not for near future at least . We are accustomed since we come into this league to carry the offence not the defence . That's what we are paid for . We can't do our job if your not doing a better job of protecting us now , can we . You can be replaced better/easier than us . We are improving , but fed up the rest are not doing much of a job protecting us or preventing opposition from running us every night with little to no pushback from most of you . Good meeting guys , now lets go out and have some fun creating some offence/exctement again , So that ends my Fantasy Backdoor Players Only Meeting .

I have no doubt that MacT and Klowe care a lot and are extremely passionate about the Oilers. I'm sure the "bleed Oiler" and all that BS. The problem is they are not qualified to manage an NHL team, and their track record proves this. Katz needs to get QUALIFIED professionals to manage this team and get it back on track.

I have lost all faith in their ability and can see no reason why any intelligent person should believe that they will turn this around.

There is no excuse for how bad this team is. I believed in the rebuild before, but I have lost faith now. I will always be an Oiler fan, but KLowe, MacT and their buddies are cronies, and a disgrace to this franchise.

How can the team be this bad after seven years of suck. Its obvious that the current management team do not have the skills.

Maybe a Moosehead beer commercial? Chips and beer do go well together!

Boycotting a game wont work since most of the tickets will have been paid for. Boycott the concessions and beer and merchandise for a couple of games. Dont give em any extra until they show that they want to win

Beer is the only thing that makes the home games bearable

let's not get confused with the past, which was predicated on hard work, desire, competition in spite of obvious talent shortage.

these current years are not built on any of those cornerstones. so yes, i can be disconnected and have little hope. i can see how we all are.

That's the best idea if it works.

Social media is the perfect medium to rally people and to pressure the target of any cause. Look at the Middle east for example and its "Arab spring". It can work if there is a will. It's one thing to bitch about the Oilers with beer in hand. It's another thing all together to stop going to games to send a message to Katz & Lowe. The next nation wide game at Rexall is the Calgary-Oilers game on 7 December. How fitting!

Not a big fan of the current Dread Pirate Roberts; as it turns out he's a terrible pirate. Hopefully the next manifestation will be less disappointing.

As much as I dislike my favorite team losing hockey games, I dislike the growing sense of entitlement among Oiler fans even more. If anything is going to drive me away, it's that.

There was an interesting story on 60 minutes last night about the University of Alabama coach and his ability to create winners It should be required watching for all Oiler players.

I think the unfortunate situation that the Oilers are in, as opposed to college players trying to make the NHL, is that they think they're already at the top. I worry that they think there's nothing left to learn.

We need Scotty Bowman or Pat Burns (RIP). Sadly Eakins never had a chance with these spoiled brats.

It's a FACT!

To a point you are true, but if losing becomes the norm, endless people will tune out

but until then, hills and valleys, yes we are suckers, we'll stay for that, but always to a point

The level of mediocrity by this franchise is unparalleled and could get worse who knows?

The Oilers are Bill Ranford in 1990 in game 5 against Winnipeg reaching back and saving the series to rally and win the Cup. I've waited this long for another cup- can't give up now!

Galchenyuk was, and is, by far the best player out of that draft.

Not surprisingly:

Yakupov - .56 PPG -16

Galchenyuk - .60 PPG +15

Galchenyuk is already playing a great 200 foot game while Yakupov is still trying to find his ass.

* Galchenyuk is almost 6 months younger.

Once again the Oilers went for the shiny, bright thing rather than picking a player who was bigger, smarter and a centre.

Best player available (snort) is nothing more than opinion and I'd wager not only Galchenyuk but also Ryan Murray, Morgan Reilly, Hampus Lindholm, Matt Dumba, Derek Pouliot and Jacob Trouba end up being better NHL players.

"Galchenyuk is almost 6 months younger." You're really using that in your argument?? Dude, that age gap might have made a difference when they were both playing atom hockey but when you're an adult that short of a time frame means nothing.

I'm honestly too young to remember a lot of the greater moments, being 20 and all. However, I remember games my dad took me to when I was younger where bench brawls happened when we were getting pumped, when it was about grit and not holding back. I've always loved the oilers, and I know the feelings I had when the oilers made the 06' run. I don't hold on to that as my reason to keep watching, I keep watching because even though there seems to be less and less of a point, that feeling creeps back when I see things like Gagner's 8 point night where I put down my books and instead of studying for a midterm, made a memory. Maybe it'll be after I'm done university the oilers make the playoffs. I know I'll be watching day in and day out. Hope my friends may seem like the wussies way out, but I'll be damned if Ever see myself not watching the team and game I love. Oilers nation is the best nation for a reason, no one can handle what we do, and when we make the next big step, we'll be happier than ever.
