Oilers deal Ladislav Smid, sign Ilya Bryzgalov

The Edmonton Oilers have traded Ladislav Smid to the Calgary Flames. Reportedly, they have also signed goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov.

The Trade

On it's own, this deal is a clear win for the Calgary Flames.

The only legitimate NHL player in this trade is Ladislav Smid. He has his faults; in particular he isn't an especially good puck-mover and has always been at his best when paired with a defenceman who can take primary responsibility for that part of the game. With that said, he is a legitimate middle-pairing defensive defenceman and a welcome physical presence, a guy who can kill penalties and has played some tough minutes over the years.

Olivier Roy is a marginal NHL goaltending prospect at this point, a guy still struggling to prove he can play regularly at the AHL level. Laurent Brossoit, an ex-Edmonton Oil King, is in his first year as a professional but is a better prospect long-term. Neither of these guys really matter in the NHL picture in the short term.

Roman Horak adds centre depth. He has 82 games of NHL experience but has spent most of this season with Abbotsford; he'll help the Barons a lot at centre right now and provides the Oilers with a second plausible call-up at that position (along with Linus Omark.

In the balance: the Oilers cleared cap space, but their NHL roster just got poorer.

Bryzgalov

Ilya Bryzgalov is a pretty good goalie. We don't have contract details yet, but the best guess is that we're looking at a one-year deal somewhere in the $2.0 - $2.5 million per year range. This isn't a totally surprising move; Jason Gregor reported it might happen not that long ago on this site.

Over the last five seasons, Bryzgalov has posted a 0.923 save percentage at even-strength. That makes him a little better than Devan Dubnyk and puts him in the same range as guys like Jonathan Quick, Carey Price and Corey Crawrford over that span. The difference is that Bryzgalov also famously imploded after being signed to a amassive ocntract by Philadelphia.

This is a good addition, particularly if he's being brought in to compete with Devan Dubnyk for playing time. It's not enough to explain the Smid trade, unless the contract is horrific.

That's where we are now. The Oilers are better in net at the moment, significantly worse on defence and if another move doesn't come this has been a very bad night for Craig MacTavish. Another move is probably coming, and it will need to be a good one to make up for what's already happened.

I actually think this could work. Bryzgalov complained about Philly's defensive system and the Oilers don't have one of those so no worries.

It makes room for Klefbom (who is reportedly a Smid with some offense), as well as Marincin and Nurse next year. Plus, I doubt this is the end of the trades. Everyone should wait for the dust to settle before making judgements.

As a Flames fan, I would like to offer my apologies (for trading with a rival), my thanks (for giving us your best defenceman), and my consolation (because your defence is now absolutely the worst in the league beyond any question).

I actually think signing Bryz is an obvious and prudent decision for the Oilers. You need another option in net, and he is the best option available.

I also really like Horak. Kid has character, and I think he will become a very good 3rd liner some day.

And Brossoit has as good of a chance of being a #1 goalie as any other high-end goalie prospect.

But man, you guys got ****ed in this trade.

I hope the Oilers are getting something good because Smid is a solid 2nd pair shutdown guy. I get that with Ference he's expendable but unless the Oilers get a few good pieces like Curtis Glencross, Stajan or some other guys I question the move.

The Oilers almost never trade with the Flames. Weird.

Edit - Terrible trade. Roman Horak and Brossoit were not worth Smid. Unless there is more to this MacT got fleeced.

This doesn't look good... We give up grit for a 4th line C? And Bryzgalov? Probably the biggest dice roll in the league right now. On the positive side Brossoit looks like an excellent prospect... There has to be more to come, or was this just to appease all the fans calling for some Bold (riverboat gambling)?

Have we stooped that low that we are now intentionally losing trades to the Flamers? This is incredulous! Good thing our team is loaded with tough gritty defence men. And we get another midget back for a "4th line centre". Hope Lowe and MacT had a great time partying in Toronto with Ford.

But he was traded for Horak, who you can find in the remainder bin at K-Mart anytime you like and a G prospect who is many years away, if ever.

While celebrating his third goal Bryz will grab him and tell him to "chill because three goal is nothing compared to the universe". Relax everyone. This season is done anyway. Just consider the rest of the way a 'preseason' of sorts.

Brossoit is a better goalie than Roy. Good. Smid is a #4 Dman and he was exposed playing in a higher role in Edmonton. His faults are very aparent: slow, poor passing, marginal defensive zone coverage. His position as a #4 Dman is redundant with Ference, Schultz Jr., Belov, Petry, Larson, Fedun, Mirancin & Klefbom. Don't forget that he was being paid $3.5mil: that's far to high for someone of his skill at the #4 d-spot. Sadly his intangibles will be missed. He wanted to be in Etown, married a gal from here. He'll be missed. Sadly I hope this doesn't show that Oiler management has no loyalty to the rest of the league. I fear it may.

Horak is good at hockey, better than Smid (even though they play different positions). He's a smart hockey player. He'll be a decent fit at 4th line C. Certainly better than Acton & Smyth.

Bryz aside, this isn't a fleece job on MacT.

The Bryz signing, honestly, I can't imagine what a media frenzy this will be when they play in Philly. I seriously hope he starts. I know DE won't play him but it'd be amazing drama for the two bottomfeeder teams.

I'll give you a clue why the Oilers would trade Smid within the division even though he's good...

That reason has six rings, and thinks he's the smartest one in the room despite all evidence pointing in the opposite direction.

What will be missed is he was a team player and good shot blocker... but his puckmoving ability and skating were not the best. Was out of postion too often for a vet. player.

Brossoit could become something at the NHL level. But so could Olivier Roy, goalies are just too hard to predict. Brossoit clearly has a better chance, but we're still talking about two guys who will probably never make it.

Horak has essentially already made it, he could slot into the Oilers' bottom 6 tomorrow. But he has had difficulty scoring at the pro level, so odds are against him getting TOO much better (he will improve somewhat, I'm sure).

I know what kind of game Smid brings. And I like it. He's a defenceman who can defend. He's one-dimensional, but sometimes that's exactly the dimension you need. The Flames need that dimension. But the Oilers probably need it even more, so this trade is pretty much baffling.
