Oilers deal Ladislav Smid, sign Ilya Bryzgalov

The Edmonton Oilers have traded Ladislav Smid to the Calgary Flames. Reportedly, they have also signed goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov.

The Trade

On it's own, this deal is a clear win for the Calgary Flames.

The only legitimate NHL player in this trade is Ladislav Smid. He has his faults; in particular he isn't an especially good puck-mover and has always been at his best when paired with a defenceman who can take primary responsibility for that part of the game. With that said, he is a legitimate middle-pairing defensive defenceman and a welcome physical presence, a guy who can kill penalties and has played some tough minutes over the years.

Olivier Roy is a marginal NHL goaltending prospect at this point, a guy still struggling to prove he can play regularly at the AHL level. Laurent Brossoit, an ex-Edmonton Oil King, is in his first year as a professional but is a better prospect long-term. Neither of these guys really matter in the NHL picture in the short term.

Roman Horak adds centre depth. He has 82 games of NHL experience but has spent most of this season with Abbotsford; he'll help the Barons a lot at centre right now and provides the Oilers with a second plausible call-up at that position (along with Linus Omark.

In the balance: the Oilers cleared cap space, but their NHL roster just got poorer.

Bryzgalov

Ilya Bryzgalov is a pretty good goalie. We don't have contract details yet, but the best guess is that we're looking at a one-year deal somewhere in the $2.0 - $2.5 million per year range. This isn't a totally surprising move; Jason Gregor reported it might happen not that long ago on this site.

Over the last five seasons, Bryzgalov has posted a 0.923 save percentage at even-strength. That makes him a little better than Devan Dubnyk and puts him in the same range as guys like Jonathan Quick, Carey Price and Corey Crawrford over that span. The difference is that Bryzgalov also famously imploded after being signed to a amassive ocntract by Philadelphia.

This is a good addition, particularly if he's being brought in to compete with Devan Dubnyk for playing time. It's not enough to explain the Smid trade, unless the contract is horrific.

That's where we are now. The Oilers are better in net at the moment, significantly worse on defence and if another move doesn't come this has been a very bad night for Craig MacTavish. Another move is probably coming, and it will need to be a good one to make up for what's already happened.

God I hope Bryz only got a 1-year. Signing him could turn out to be a great move or an utterly spectacular failure.

MacT just had his clock cleaned by Feaster. I get the salary dump aspect, but it seems like a really one sided deal.

EDIT: Thanks for the update J-Dub, and thank you GOD that Bryz got a one year. I'd kill to hear Yak and Bryz get interviewed after winning the cup. Time to get weird in Oil Country.

Mac-T just traded Smid for my toilet plunger.....

Horrible move to make room for signing Bryz...

Mac-T wasted cap room and contracts on Labarbara and Grebeshkov.

I don't think this guy is cut out for this job.

If we didn't have god awful Ferrence, Grebeshkov, and Labarbie contracts, we could have moved Smid for a Willie Mitchell or Anton Volchenkov.

Sounds like we got Roman Horak and a ECHL goalie...

At least get Chris Breen in the deal....

I understand that this trade opens cap room to sign Bryz, which is a gamble that may or may not pay off. But we now have one less NHL defensemen on an already weak d-corps.

So surely there is another deal coming with a capable NHL dman coming our way... Isn't there?

I don't like the trade. But it frees up 4 million in cap room.

As a Calgarian and die hard Flames fan thank you Oilers for the free gift!

We get the best player in the trade and at worst a stating 4-5 defensemen who has some size and a bit of nastiness the Flames require.

What are you getting in return??

Broisoit...young guy long term project. Would not have made the Flames as we have 2 prospects ahead of him. Recently was burned in Abbotsford in 2 lopsided games and appears to have lost his confidence hence sent to Anchorage of ECHL.

Horak..hard working young centre. Could not crack a weak Flames roster. Long term 4th line LW (not Centreman - too small).

I don't really like this deal, we could have gotten Brossoit cheaper at the draft (and yes, we didn't have the poor start to goaltending but it was an area that MacT wanted to address). But we do have a plethora of middle pairing defencemen and it clears cap space for Bryz (not that I'm exactly wild about having him either). But my question is why in the world did the Flames do this? You don't trade prospects for players in year 1 of a rebuild! And it isn't like they have actual goaltenders in their system. But whatever, I'm an Oilers fan what the f#$% do I know about how to do a rebuild.

Even if Bryzgalov had a .940 save average would you feel good signing him to anything over 2 years next year, considering his history?

Oiler’s syndrome: watching players play top roles even though they would have trouble cracking the line up on good teams and getting so use to watching the Oiler player in the top role, that you eventually think he is that good.

Smid had awesome heart and character, but he wasn’t spectacular. In fact, this season he has been a poor defencemen. He’s also a guy like Horcoff that just needs change, never mind everything else.

Best of luck to Smid, Oiler’s needed to do something/anything about goaltending and they did. Hopefully it pans out, this is likely just the start of many changes.

It could be the Tylenol 3 talking, but there is a tiny bit of me that thinks MacT was being kind to the good soldier that Smid was/is. Smid was the only Oiler who was a fat-ish long term contract hit for the next few seasons, he is a fairly good 2nd/3rd pairing D-Man which the Oil are also stacked in. With MacT trading him to Calgary to offload cap space, it could have been so he doesn't really have to uproot everything to play anywhere else as he could feasibly still live in Edmonton for the most part. I could be completely wrong on this, but it just seems weird to trade a player like Smid to the Flames for some spare parts, even if it a salary dump.
