Oilers deal Ladislav Smid, sign Ilya Bryzgalov

The Edmonton Oilers have traded Ladislav Smid to the Calgary Flames. Reportedly, they have also signed goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov.

The Trade

On it's own, this deal is a clear win for the Calgary Flames.

The only legitimate NHL player in this trade is Ladislav Smid. He has his faults; in particular he isn't an especially good puck-mover and has always been at his best when paired with a defenceman who can take primary responsibility for that part of the game. With that said, he is a legitimate middle-pairing defensive defenceman and a welcome physical presence, a guy who can kill penalties and has played some tough minutes over the years.

Olivier Roy is a marginal NHL goaltending prospect at this point, a guy still struggling to prove he can play regularly at the AHL level. Laurent Brossoit, an ex-Edmonton Oil King, is in his first year as a professional but is a better prospect long-term. Neither of these guys really matter in the NHL picture in the short term.

Roman Horak adds centre depth. He has 82 games of NHL experience but has spent most of this season with Abbotsford; he'll help the Barons a lot at centre right now and provides the Oilers with a second plausible call-up at that position (along with Linus Omark.

In the balance: the Oilers cleared cap space, but their NHL roster just got poorer.

Bryzgalov

Ilya Bryzgalov is a pretty good goalie. We don't have contract details yet, but the best guess is that we're looking at a one-year deal somewhere in the $2.0 - $2.5 million per year range. This isn't a totally surprising move; Jason Gregor reported it might happen not that long ago on this site.

Over the last five seasons, Bryzgalov has posted a 0.923 save percentage at even-strength. That makes him a little better than Devan Dubnyk and puts him in the same range as guys like Jonathan Quick, Carey Price and Corey Crawrford over that span. The difference is that Bryzgalov also famously imploded after being signed to a amassive ocntract by Philadelphia.

This is a good addition, particularly if he's being brought in to compete with Devan Dubnyk for playing time. It's not enough to explain the Smid trade, unless the contract is horrific.

That's where we are now. The Oilers are better in net at the moment, significantly worse on defence and if another move doesn't come this has been a very bad night for Craig MacTavish. Another move is probably coming, and it will need to be a good one to make up for what's already happened.

From hockey futures.

The butterfly goalie can be at times brilliant and get on a hot streak but is prone to letting in a weak goal on a harmless-looking shot when he's fighting his game. His biggest weakness is that he can be susceptible to letting in soft goals and losing his mental focus.

Great. Now everyone second verse same as the first.

I don't think the Oilers want to do that. He's really gone down the drain.

I will reprise what I posted on an earlier thread:

Prior to the beginning of the season and very early on in the season I suggested getting Bryz and was chided by Gregor on the radio (and stauffer too?). Now it looks like they might but I oppose it.

The horse is now out of the barn - the season is lost. Bryz is a bandaid at best for this Season only and trading players with futures longer than one year for a sub-one year impact is panic-driven idiocy.

I do not understand why the Calgary Lames would do this deal..........someone like SMID does not really help them,........It's going to be wierd seeing him in Red.

The guy is a classic warrior ........too bad he did not have more skill with the puck.

All the best Smiddy........you were always an honest hockey player who defended your team mates with everything you had!

You’re completely right, people have watched Smid play in the top 4 pairing for so long they actually think he is top four. He would be bottom pairing on a good team. He has also been playing poorly this season. Best of luck to him but if Bryzgalov even plays average, this will be a good move.

I don't mind trading Ladi Smid. I get pissed when they trade him for nothing. We keep hearing how hard it is to get big gritty reliable players, and they give one away for a couple of long shot prospects. It's really disappointing.

I watched LB in all of the WJHL playoff games leading up to the Oilkings winning the cup.

LB literally stole a few close games and made some huge saves. I am by no means a goaltending expert but he kinda looked like Patrick Roy with his size and style and the team always played confidently in front of him.

It's no surprise the Oilkings fortunes turned the minute LB was signed to the NHL and Jarry started getting the starts.

We got a quality prospect, in fact excellent quality, I just hope we don't ruin him in the last part of his development..

The only way this remotely resembles sense is if a larger deal or deals are in the works, but even still, this is a bad deal...

The Oil's depth just lost significant depth in a steady blue liner that the opposition hates to play against. Two things I'm at a loss about: if we needed to move a D-man, why Smid? If we were willing to trade Smid, was there no better return than than Calgary cast-offs and prospects that didn't involve the team's provincial rival?

A soft team that's already easy to play against just got softer and easier to play against. Oh ya, and we signed the goalie that the rest of the league has passed on for a bloated contract, based on accounts so far.

There has to be deals to come, right? I mean, it doesn't take a business degree for MacT to understand that he's just made a position of weakness even weaker... Either we've got a big deal coming, which still doesn't make these good deals or signings, or being an Oiler fan just got crappier today.

The Oilers are nothing but pathetic and sadly, have no identity in the NHL. What are they known for except losing? Oh yeah, overpaying their players, specifically paying 6 million dollar contracts to 3 guys, 23 and under who are nowhere near their primes. Bryzgalov is nut job, but when he is on his game, he can contribute. Since the Oilers seem to be posting a failing grade between the pipes, hopefully he can bring some life to this dismal team. They should have paid him NHL minimum, however. The deal with Philly had to be one of the worst ever in history. Maybe the shake-up in goal will get Dubnyk off his ass as well, and playing comesurate to what he is getting paid. Which again, is too much for his skill level. Smid is an average D-Man who again is making too much money for his level of skill. This seems to be a pattern with how the Oilers management spend their money. Smid makes more than Subban, who is a Norris Trophy winner. Hell would freeze over (I guess it routinely does in Edmonton, anyway) before Smid's name would ever be mentioned in Norris Trophy discussions. Doubt if he will bring any more to Calgary than he did in Edmonton. Eakins is doing a terrible job, he seems to be spinning in circles, and McTavish and Lowe aren't helping him in the situation the Oilers are in. These trades are a symptom of management who doesn't know what to do. All three of them should be fired and obviously Katz the owner doesn't have the stones to do it. He's bleeding money and he must like it.

The Oil have also signed the goaltending god that is Chet Pickard to a minor league deal to play in OKC who last season played in Somewhere in Sweden.

I had no real monster breaking story to offer except this accidentally found tidbit which might have some meaning with regards to the 50 contract limit or who will be assigned where, or some other piece from a puzzle of a picture that only MacT and 6Rings is seeing or has seen.

Well, the only logical explanation for trading Smid for two late round prospects is to free up cap space. I think that much is agreed upon. I think it can also be agreed upon that that extra cap space isn't for a goalie who isn't currently playing in the league. Those type of signings should be relatively inexpensive. Hopefully Bryzgalov isn't going to cost two million plus but it is looking that way. Unfortunately MacT isn't in the greatest bargaining position to trade. I'm sure all of his previous inquiries around the league into the cost of a bonafide starting goalie resulted in a lot of unbearable propositions. "Sure, Hiller is available... for Nuge and Hemsky." So might as well take a chance on Bryzgalov, just hope they don't overpay. I hope that whatever deal MacT is working on doesn't fall through or the Smid deal looks bad. Stinky bad. Lunatics running the asylum bad. For a team not noted for its defensive depth to give up a starting NHL defenceman for no immediate help in return makes no sense whatsoever unless you completely give up which is highly unlikely or you have something very close to fruition. For an early Christmas present I wish for Shea Weber. Please Mr. MacClaus??

Actually, I've always likes Laddy, but he really seems to have regressed over the past couple of seasons, and his performance this year, objectively, has continued to trend downward. And getting walked around by Richard Panik for the winning goal against TB (Richard who? At least Horcoff, in his last game, got undressed by Datsyuk. But Richard Panik?) may well have been the final nail in his coffin.

Clearly a salary dump of an underperforming player (another of Tambo's genuis moves), and indicative of things to come, and not, despite DSF's crowings, a sign of MacT's dementia.
