Oilers deal Ladislav Smid, sign Ilya Bryzgalov

The Edmonton Oilers have traded Ladislav Smid to the Calgary Flames. Reportedly, they have also signed goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov.

The Trade

On it's own, this deal is a clear win for the Calgary Flames.

The only legitimate NHL player in this trade is Ladislav Smid. He has his faults; in particular he isn't an especially good puck-mover and has always been at his best when paired with a defenceman who can take primary responsibility for that part of the game. With that said, he is a legitimate middle-pairing defensive defenceman and a welcome physical presence, a guy who can kill penalties and has played some tough minutes over the years.

Olivier Roy is a marginal NHL goaltending prospect at this point, a guy still struggling to prove he can play regularly at the AHL level. Laurent Brossoit, an ex-Edmonton Oil King, is in his first year as a professional but is a better prospect long-term. Neither of these guys really matter in the NHL picture in the short term.

Roman Horak adds centre depth. He has 82 games of NHL experience but has spent most of this season with Abbotsford; he'll help the Barons a lot at centre right now and provides the Oilers with a second plausible call-up at that position (along with Linus Omark.

In the balance: the Oilers cleared cap space, but their NHL roster just got poorer.

Bryzgalov

Ilya Bryzgalov is a pretty good goalie. We don't have contract details yet, but the best guess is that we're looking at a one-year deal somewhere in the $2.0 - $2.5 million per year range. This isn't a totally surprising move; Jason Gregor reported it might happen not that long ago on this site.

Over the last five seasons, Bryzgalov has posted a 0.923 save percentage at even-strength. That makes him a little better than Devan Dubnyk and puts him in the same range as guys like Jonathan Quick, Carey Price and Corey Crawrford over that span. The difference is that Bryzgalov also famously imploded after being signed to a amassive ocntract by Philadelphia.

This is a good addition, particularly if he's being brought in to compete with Devan Dubnyk for playing time. It's not enough to explain the Smid trade, unless the contract is horrific.

That's where we are now. The Oilers are better in net at the moment, significantly worse on defence and if another move doesn't come this has been a very bad night for Craig MacTavish. Another move is probably coming, and it will need to be a good one to make up for what's already happened.

Not in my mind. But, this is a Bold move when you look at how it all and that is what Mac T promised. I personally thought Smid was pretty decent and a heck of a battler.

If it is true that he signed, then welcome to the terrordome Bryz!

Terrordome is damn right...

4 headed goalie monster....

When this doesn't work out, I wonder if Mac-T will sign Theodore.

Now....Mac-T definitely cannot trade and get an actual useful goalie like a Jake Allen, Hiller, or a STL goalie.

Wonder if he could make the Philly game tom, as back up only, would be classic. As for Smid wish they had dumped his salary anywhere other than Calgary.

The guy is a classic warrior ........too bad he did not have more skill with the puck.

All the best Smiddy........you were always an honest hockey player who defended your team mates with everything you had!

Pretty small def corps that just got run over the past 2 games and they are playing wideman and Brodie way too much.

@Stack Pad Save

Eberle was drafted with Anaheim's first round pick so he should be included in that deal.

But yes that trade was horrific. I was hoping that if they were going to deal Smid it would be for an upgrade on defence. Coburn, Ehrhoff, etc. This deal is quite poor unless the Oilers are doing more.

Problem with this move is that if Mact really believed in Breezebygloveof he could have signed him in the preason, rather than wasting the roster spot and money on Labarbera.

Nobody considered Bryzgalov better in the summer. Labarbera was not predicted to be this bad and as such Mac T had to make a move. He tried other options first but the asking price was too high.

At least if he doesn't work out, he is cut loose at the end of the year.

Rumor is Simmonds and Brayden Schenn may be on the way to Edmonton in return for Hemsky +.

I can't imagine Smid was dealt without a plan to fill the spot.

More coming for sure.

Brayden Schenn, Luke Schenn & Wayne Summonds for Eberle, Hemsky & Shultz!! Y'all wait & see!!! Fedun is the same player with a lot more heart for a lot less cap space ;)

Yikes. With a struggling team I wouldn't bring the circus to town.

The risk on the ice is minimal. I like Smid but he hasn't been very good this year. He got pwned on TB's 3rd G.

The prospects from Cgy are irrelevant. Total salary dump. It's likely neither every plays in the NHL.

Bryz's best years were behind very good defensive systems. LaBarbera had good numbers in Phx too. And I question how motivated he'll be sitting on a buyout.

Most of all I worry about bringing his crazy into the dressing room. He's out there for a goalie.

On the ice though I doubt he could be worse than Dubnyk has been.

I don't think trading smid is a bad idea long term, but couldn't they of got more than that for him at the trade deadline? It seems either that or using I'm in a multi-piece deal would have been much smarter.

I actually think signing Bryz is an obvious and prudent decision for the Oilers. You need another option in net, and he is the best option available.

I also really like Horak. Kid has character, and I think he will become a very good 3rd liner some day.

And Brossoit has as good of a chance of being a #1 goalie as any other high-end goalie prospect.

But man, you guys got ****ed in this trade.

You are over-valuing Smid.

I thought that stint with the echl team was only temporary. Keep in shape type of thing.

Brossoit could become something at the NHL level. But so could Olivier Roy, goalies are just too hard to predict. Brossoit clearly has a better chance, but we're still talking about two guys who will probably never make it.

Horak has essentially already made it, he could slot into the Oilers' bottom 6 tomorrow. But he has had difficulty scoring at the pro level, so odds are against him getting TOO much better (he will improve somewhat, I'm sure).

I know what kind of game Smid brings. And I like it. He's a defenceman who can defend. He's one-dimensional, but sometimes that's exactly the dimension you need. The Flames need that dimension. But the Oilers probably need it even more, so this trade is pretty much baffling.

I'll say it again....the reason you feel baffled is because you don't know Smid....you're overvaluing him.....not only is he one dimensional, he's not that physical....like Harlie said....more bear hugs than hits....seldom fights.....and he's at his prime....he's not getting any better.......he's a serviceable 4...more like a 5 on a good team.......if you don't believe me....ask yourself why the Oilers would trade him to anyone in their division let alone their arch rivals?

An apparent bad deal(s) may turn out to be a double win or more for the Oilers. Roy basically for Broissoit and Horak ; and Smid for Bryzalov with the cap money we had to spend . Maybe this is not nearly as bad as it first seemed , if the Flames acquisitions turn out down the line .

@2004Z06

Bob Stauffer says those rumours are not true and are complete "BS".

The reality is that Mact has hancuffed the organization by not buying out Eager, signing Labarbera, Grebeshkov and Macintyre. That's 4 wasted roster spots on gut shots. On top of that we have Potter in the minors. The Oilers as it stands have 5 players signed to Nhl contracts on the Barons. I guess Potter will likely be recalled at some time, but that's just not good asset management.

Good move to sign Bryz. Taking a chance on him is worth it considering all our current goaltenders were given an honest shot to prove themselves and none (except Bachman) played an even average game once.

Anyone remember Bobrovsky? he was just as bad if not worse than Bryz in Phili but then he gets traded to Columbus and puts up crazy numbers.

Either way, even if he sucks on par with Dubnyk and LaBarbara and we continue to tank the season, the post game-interviews will be more entertaining.

Welcome Bryz. Smid sad to see ya go.

Jofa wrote:

The only way this remotely resembles sense is if a larger deal or deals are in the works, but even still, this is a bad deal...

The Oil's depth just lost significant depth in a steady blue liner that the opposition hates to play against. Two things I'm at a loss about: if we needed to move a D-man, why Smid? If we were willing to trade Smid, was there no better return than than Calgary cast-offs and prospects that didn't involve the team's provincial rival?

A soft team that's already easy to play against just got softer and easier to play against. Oh ya, and we signed the goalie that the rest of the league has passed on for a bloated contract, based on accounts so far.

There has to be deals to come, right? I mean, it doesn't take a business degree for MacT to understand that he's just made a position of weakness even weaker... Either we've got a big deal coming, which still doesn't make these good deals or signings, or being an Oiler fan just got crappier today.

Not so sure the opposition hates to play against Smid. For that matter, I'm not sure there is any d man on the Oil that NHL opposition hate to play against. But my interpretation of the analytic data, such as I'm able, is that he had just about the worst numbers of any regular dman (we are talking about such things as +- scoring chance/15 ES min, etc.), and had been trending down. Just seems to have hit a wall. Maybe the change will do him good, but he seemed to be floundering here.

The big problem is, of course, who steps in to replace him. Taylor Fedun (3 inches shorter and 20 lbs lighter) maybe, but it seems like a long time to wait for Nurse. MacT was strongly hinting Klefbom is coming sooner rather than later but again, it seems like they are rushing players into the lineup again.

wow are guys ever going over the top here with the MacT hate... if you ask me, we just stuck our rival Calgary with a 4M/year contract on a #5 defenceman for 4 years... and got them to throw in a couple of decent prospects.

In a cap world, the old adage of team getting the best player in the trade is no longer relevant, we cleared cap space, made room for Klefbom and handcuffed a rival with a contract this is only going to get worse every year

MacT, you magnificent bastard!!!
