Dallas Eakins Trolls Oilers Fans/Media

Jonathan Willis
December 10 2013 10:45PM

Reporter: "[Inaudible] won the game on the power play, power play was struggling again tonight..."

Eakins: "The power play was one-for three, 33 percent. That's a hell of a night."

For those who didn't see the game, the power play allowed one shorthanded goal on it's first attempt, created almost nothing in five full minutes late in the third with the Oilers holding a one-goal lead (after which the Hurricanes scored to tie it) and then won the game in overtime.

Which rather strongly suggests that whatever else coaching the Oilers has done to Eakins, it hasn't robbed him of his sense of humour.

Final note for the irony-impaired: I think this is funny , and you look ridiculous when you angrily demand why I'm 'calling out' Eakins.

Well, considering the "organization… believe[s] that the PP is the engine that drives the team," it's a good thing Eakins has a handle on what a good special teams night looks like!

I believe the single most frustrating thing about this team isn't the defence (which we all know is sub-NHL level), 2 way play, or getting out muscled (all things we knew were areas of need), but the idea of being able to pass the puck into the net. This team is skilled, we get it, put it on net and good things happen, then with any sort of success, resort back to trying to pass it into the net. MADDENING!

Good thing this game didn't last another five minutes, otherwise, Oilers would not have even received one point.. the late Canes penalty saves their bacon.

Potter and Nuge get splatter all over the boards, and not so much as a face wash from the team mates... terrible . Should take away all their jock straps... its only for guys that have balls. Give them some panty hose instead.

The thing about the PP is that shooting % (just like at 5x5) can vary wildly from year to year as luck is want to do and shots are a far better predictor of PP strength:

http://www.fearthefin.com/2013/3/2/4056828/sharks-vs-predators-has-the-power-play-righted-the-ship

http://www.arcticicehockey.com/2011/4/9/2100045/what-drives-power-play-success

13-14: SH/60 (52.6, 16th in the league); SH% (12.10% 16th)

12-13 SH/60 (41.5, 29th); SH% (16.86% 2nd)

11-12 SH/60 (44.5, 24th); SH% (16.07 1st)

10-11 SH/60 (41.6, 30th); SH% (12.32 13th)

What this shows:

1. From 10-11 to 12-13 seasons the team was in the basement of the league in terms of generating shots 5x4.

2. From 11-12 to 12-13 the team was elite in terms of shooting % 5x4 (a fact that is incredibly hard to repeat, and often a product of luck)

3. This season we have regressed to 10-11 levels of shooting (about league average), but are generating WAY more shots on the PP.

This is actually encouraging despite the fact that the PP looks like an all-world mess, struggling with everything from zone exits/entries to net front presence.

So. Of Edmonton's actual NHL talent on the roster, who do most think is the one to be traded for actual useful, team building assets? Now remember, we gotta give something to get something (yes, one of the proven young stars under contract for a decent return).

IMO: Eberle.

-Oilers scrape up a win, all of our elite players contribute -JW writes up a nice little lighthearted article -Oiler fans respond appropriately ^^^

Holy crap guys, this is sad.

I feel embarrassed of the team when they lose, embarrassed of the fans when they win.

Let's just all unite and celebrate the top notch offensive powers we have in Hall, Eberle, Nuge and Yakupov. Sure for the right package all could be moved, but while they're here lets celebrate them and act like fans should. If these guys stay around for the next 3, 4, or 5 years, this team will have some amazing moments. There isn't a guy in the world who can argue against that. There will be big shakeups, MacT will move guys and prospects and picks for grit and size and defence and experience, but lets remember that nobody, not a single team in the NHL, as as much potential and promise as these 4 together (not to mention the start of a good supporting group in Perron, Ferrence, Schultz Jr and ...dont kill me... Petry).

Chill out everyone, this season is a wash so who gives a crap if they win by 1 or 6 goals. Just cheer for your young guns and fuel their drive to hoist the cup for you one day. It might be closer than you think.

Some of us may have been guilty of a knee-jerk reaction in terms of how some folks responded to Eakin's comments post-game. But JW even you would have to admit this Oiler fiasco has robbed many of us of a sense of humor when we have watched this organization try and sell us B.S and patience when we see 27th place, 11-18-3 after 32 games. They almost blew this game to a weak team on a back to back.

Do you not get the point that patience is rather frayed and almost non-existent? Your attitude is at the very least condescending and out of touch. You call commenters ridiculous but are hyper-sensitive when one of your writers catches a little flak.

If you want to see ridiculous...look in a mirror.

Your corrected sentence doesn't convey the exact same meaning though.

If I understand Willis correctly, maybe something like "He didn't answer the question, and the way in which he didn't answer it was hilarious."

I'm not saying he should even switch to my way, this is directed to your correction. Sometimes there's a natural opposition between grammar and colour, like when there's no sufficiently short or properly rhythmic way of conveying something that depends on humor or the character of the speaker.

Sometimes an incorrectly formed sentence or improperly used word is intentional. The purpose is to cause the reader to evaluate the words to determine the intended meaning, thereby creating a stronger hold on the readers' attention.

"lets eat Grandma!" "Lets eat, Grandma!"

How's Yakupov got -1 (only Oilers with minus on the team tonite) when he was on the ice for Oilers 2 even strength goals scored? Weird stats, the poor guy got shafted with plus/minus stat again. Put Nail on power play, he is the only guy that shoot the puck. You cannot score if you don't shoot the puck, they kept passing around out there. Look at the Canes tying goal, the defenseman threw it at the net and it went in. Shoot the damn pucks!

I noticed, and I realise it was only one play, that Arcobello was very Peca-esque on that one goal (chasing the puck on a dump in when most others would change lines or whatever). Nice to see. I haven't watched any other games this season really, so I guess I'm asking if he's playing regularly like so? Hence the praise?

Try playing like you did at the beginning of the game for the whole game. Then do it every game.

Most of us understand you are learning and growing as a team. You are missing some big pieces. As long as you put in the effort EVERY game ALL game. Win or lose all most of us fans ask for is you care and play hard every shift .You bring the passion the fans will return three fold.

Yes - that pond hockey play on the Canes 2nd goal was unforgiveable for a 7 year 2C. Nothing special there - no mesmerizing dangle or high speed offensive move to confuse anyone into some understandable puck sucking. It's almost like he's doing this kind of stuff to get outta here, but that doesn't make sense because who wants a centreman who is really that bad in his own end? So - maybe its the opposite, he's doing it so he cant get traded...

I have been watching this team since they were the Alberta Oilers and have seen some very bad hockey. However I am very proud to say I have a NHL team in my city. People are very emotional about this team ,I get that but we should try a more positive approach. We all got to watch the best hockey team in the world with Wayne and the gang. The silver lining in this cloud is that the Oilers at least played one period of not being stupid or looking lost. That is progress.

It could have easily looked like the first twenty games where they looked lost for THREE periods.

There is frustration from all generations, the born in the 60's and 70's that saw the bunch of kids in the 80's become something special and thinking it will never end and the younger group's that have seen nothing except the miracle 06 run and are sick of it. There were a lot of critics of the 80's team before they started to gel as well with many thinking Messier and Paul Coff-up needed to be run out of town. That team was surrounded by a better veteran core but it was way easier to attract free agents and make trades back then Let's hope Mac T is able to make the changes necessary before next year.

I have never been a fan of soft, offensively gifted players that make turnovers and won't stand up for their teammates. If Mike Grier or Todd Marchant were on this team, they along with Perron would be my favourite players on this team. Sorry I will not be celebrating a losing group that continues to be dead last in the west division with only the Calgary Flames in striking distance. Even during our worst years, this team was still in the race after 10 games. THis is by far the most disappointing season during the entire process.

As to Eberle's comment about the fans, he's lucky that there's anybody even in the building right now. Any other franchise and nobody would even care by now.

The Oilers' PP looks great when they use all forwards. I know they're terrible at recovering pucks in the defensive zone with no D on the ice, but after watching a listless first two minutes on the 5 minute major, I thought of loading up a shift with 5 forwards just to get it going, despite having a lead at that point. I just felt the Oilers really needed a goal there the way the Canes were building momentum.
