IRRECONCILABLE DIFFERENCES UPDATE! TRADED

Lowetide
December 19 2013 05:00PM

It could happen as soon as today (the trade deadline is tonight at midnight, after that no deals until Christmas past), but it's clear Linus Omark is once again hell bent on bolting the Oilers organization. A marriage that has always been uneasy appears to have reached the point where reconciliation is impossible.

An article by Michael Baldwin in the Oklahoman spells things out with so many specifics the mind boggles. After reading his entry on Omark I am convinced this deal may come down tonight. An example:

  • Edmonton isn't a good fit for Omark. The Oilers have several young, highly skilled forwards. But his stock could be on the rise. A couple of teams reportedly are interested. The past two months with the Barons, he's shown noticeable improvement on the defensive end.

If the story is true, we might be hearing something in the next few hours. Mr. Baldwin suggests the return expected might be an AHL player or a pick, which makes sense. I also think there's a chance Edmonton might take back a useful player with a bad contract if that player addressed a current need (two-way winger, defense) if it was necessary. It is extremely likely Edmonton would prefer to lose the contract and further reduce the number of the 50-man list (now at 48).

HE HAS NO VALUE, FOOL!

Well, there certainly has been a lot of disagreement about Omark, but he's played in the league and there may be a window of opportunity for him. Elliotte Friedman framed the issue nicely in this week's 30 Thoughts:

  • Edmonton is trying to trade AHLer Linus Omark, who deserves a shot at the NHL level and isn't going to get it with the Oilers. This is pure speculation on my part, but Buffalo makes sense. The Sabres are on a pace to score 137 goals. The last time a team scored fewer? Chicago in 1953-54, with 133 in 70 games. Twelve teams bettered that in lockout-shortened 1995. Last year? Eight. Omark's not a cure, but it's a sensible gamble, no?

Now, we'll see, but at least someone is talking about it being possible aside from Jon Willis and me. I think Omark has the ability to play in the NHL, but other clubs have their own prospects lined up and I'm not certain how many would be willing to take a chance on him. It only takes one, and chances are his agent has been working hard to make it happen.

WHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN?

Omark needs an expansion draft, but he'll have to make do with a trade. Which could come down tonight.

Update! Edmonton Oilers have traded Linus Omark to the Buffalo Sabres for a conditional 6th round pick in the 2014 draft. Sail on, Linus. Godspeed.

ITS TIME TO PART WITH THE KIDS!!! Everyone is afraid to say it, but everyone knows it's true! Well I just said it. I'd part with half our team for a Milan Lucic.

We can't even win in the regular season. Never mind the playoff are won by grit!

Time to re-analyze and make some stinking Real Trades!!

I'm hearing Hemsky and Curtis Hamilton are going to the Bruins in exchange for Lucic

I don't understand what the purpose of bringing OMark back this year. He would have been a perfect 13 forward during the next 25 games. If any of the wingers were not working/producing slip Omark into the line-up. The guy is doing anything he can to be in the NHL, has above average skill and would not kill you playing 10-12 minutes a game.

Instead he comes back and sits on the farm team, and adds nothing to the club.

The Oil should have kept him up all along or given him the Rajala treatment years ago.

I'm glad MacT gave him a chance this year to kick it in the NHL with a cheap contract and waiver wire potential, but the mistake on the player was made years ago.

I sincerely hope he gets traded and finds NHL work. He clearly wants it desperately and the NHL always needs more interesting things. Omark is an interesting thing.

Given all the AHL players the Oilers have run with this year, I can't understand how they couldn't give him some soft minutes and tried to increase his value.

I mean, would it have ruined our hunt for last place?

@john

I am tired of hearing Gregor, Lowetide and Stuffed Turkey saying that the Oilers can't keep changing coaches, because the good organizations like Detroit don't. Good teams don't need to change coaches, because they have the right guy in place. Once the Oilers get a good, proven coach it will be different. Good thing we didn't pursue Brent Sutter a number of years ago, his hard-nosed, hard-working attitude isn't near as impressive as an iron man. Oh wait, he's not that kind of Ironman.

Man the power play sucks! Under the guidance of Krueger you saw actual improvement in special teams. Under Eakins you get bush league coaching! Thanks MacT , that is what us long suffering fans wanted to see this year. A rookie coach learning his trade at our expense. Oiler management sucks big time!

I hope Omark gets his trade. The hate for the kid is odd. He's a 4th round pick. His only sin is that he's the same type of player as the top 6 F except not as good.

That doesn't make him bad. To say he has no value is plain silly. Have you not seen what gets traded in this league?

Buf is an obvious fit. I bet they could use a draft pick too. And maybe a prospect like Marincin.

Gotta think MacT wants to send a package for something bigger. Ehrhoff or Myers on D, or maybe Ott, Stafford or Moulson up front.

Or it's Omark for Weber and the prophecy is fulfilled.

Good news........this kid deserves to play if some team gives him the opportunity, of that there is no doubt.

Any ways, he is too much the prototypical forward for the Oilers and as a result will never get a real chance with the Oilers.

Time for Mac T to free up as much space as possible for the trade deadline deals.......Bold moves coming.

Oilers on the verge of sending a package consisting of Nick Schultz, Grebeskov, the conditional 6 rounder and the future considerations from the LaBarbera deal to LA Kings in exchange for Drew Doughty. as per Odie.

That was good for a laugh.

Nice to see the NHL's worst franchise picking up an AHL-level player from the league's second-worst franchise. Good luck, Leenus, in the other toilet bowl of North America.

So let's see... in the last 5 weeks we've seen 2 players traded for a bag of pucks each, & 1 player traded for a handful of magic beans + a bag of pucks. The Oilers are obviously stocking up for free gifts to hand out on opening night in the new arena!

Seriously though I hope they are simply freeing up cap space & roster spots for bigger changes & not just getting ready to jettison half the roster to begin drafting & rebuilding... again.

Since Schremp was claimed off waivers by NY, he flunked out there as well and was eventually waived again. He was then picked up by Atlanta but was not offered a qualifying contract when Atlanta moved to Winnipeg. No one else wanted to waste their time on him so he has been playing in Europe since June 2012.

As difficult as it is to hear: Schremp is not good enough to be a regular in the NHL. Omark was trending the same and for a number of reasons was highly unlikely to re-sign with Edmonton. Good on MacT to get even a bag of pucks for him.

Good lord, I'm not sure you're paying attention... It was s-a-r-c-a-s-m.
