GDB 38.0: Perron Sees His Old Team

Jonathan Willis
December 21 2013 01:36PM

The Edmonton Oilers return to Rexall tonight to face David Perron’s old squad, the St. Louis Blues, in what will be the first of three meetings between the teams.

The Trade

Craig MacTavish hasn’t had a perfect start to his tenure as general manager, but he’s done some nice things and been willing to make improvements when opportunity has come along. One of those opportunities was Perron, who became available as the Blues needed to cut salary to re-sign players like Alex Pietrangelo.

Thus far, the deal’s been awfully lopsided:

  • David Perron (Edmonton): 33GP, 14G-13A-27PTS.
  • Magnus Paajarvi (St. Louis): 15GP, 2G-0A-2PTS.
  • Second round pick in 2014 (St. Louis): Shaping up to be in the 30-35 range.

Once Paajarvi finds his legs and if that second round pick pans out this should get a little better for St. Louis, but it’s a move that made Edmonton a better team right now, and that’s important. If MacTavish can find three or four more of these the Oilers will be in great shape.

The Opposition

Edmonton hasn’t played the Blues so far this year, but the Blues are a good team and Edmonton has trouble with good teams. Many will focus on them being big and strong and tough but the fact that they’re in playoff position right now is what makes them scary. Take a look at the Oilers’ record this season against teams currently sitting in the top-eight in either conference:

  • Team inside the top eight: 2-17-2
  • Team outside the top eight: 9-6-1

Edmonton’s been pretty good against bad teams, but has been getting hammered by the good ones (an 8-2 win over Colorado notwithstanding).

The Lineup

Some interesting items there. With all of 12 healthy forwards, Dalls Eakins hasn’t got much in the way of choices, so he’s put together a power-vs.-power line, a tough minutes line and done what he can with the rest. With Luke Gazdic on the wing it’s a good bet that Sam Gagner and Nail Yakupov are the “fourth” line and will be spotted against the weakest available opposition; maybe it will help. The other line is super interesting, because Lander has struggled so far and finally gets a skilled guy (and a guy a lot like his AHL sidekick Linus Omark) on his wing. Jesse Joensuu isn’t exactly a prize as the other winger, but he’s comparable to one guy Lander’s been playing with and better than the other.

On defence it’s just nice to see Philip Larsen, the team’s seventh-best defenceman, taking a seat.

Predictions

Game day prediction: A 1-0 St. Louis Blues victory

Obvious game day prediction: Dallas Eakins gets many opportunities to work on his facial expressions. They range from incredulous (really, that's a penalty now?) to disgusted (the power play bobbles the puck at the blueline because of course it does) to resigned (well, they were going to score eventually) to a clear desire that he had stayed in the AHL.

Not-so-obvious gameday prediction: While this will be a one-sided and boring game, it won't be the most boring game of the season. That's coming in March when Edmonton next plays the Los Angeles Kings.

Clean house. Let's start the rebuild.

To a sports franchise, having jersey thrown on the ice should be equivalent to having the Canadian flag touching the ground. Unfortunately, management will shrug it off and do nothing about it. At least they're consistent.

Merry Christmas and happy holidays to all. I need a break from this Oilers misery. Read you after boxing day. Maybe I'll get a deal on a new flat screen where I can watch in smooth detail how the Oilers get pummeled night in and night out.

I really can't see Eakins getting through this.

It's so bad - and while much is self inflicted, you gotta feel for him.

The player group is disillusioned by his and the organizations leadership. They have lost faith in the cause and it is probably time for a major change.

MacT should not have put Eakins in this position. It was a mistake.

I really think MacT is going to have fire Eakins and put himself squarely in the line of fire by getting behind the bench to get this thing reasonably back on the rails thru the remainder of the year. He should fire Acton and put Messier on the bench as an Associate.

While not a big fan of the "boys on the bus" hold on this organization, I think this may be the best short term play for them to make.

Something has to give...

Hey Jonathon: here's a blog post topic for you:

Just looking at the stats for the year compared to the worst year ever for the oil 92-93 when they got 60 pts in 84 games

This year they are on track to easily shatter that record.

At 25 in 38 they are in track for 54 points in 82 (or 55 in 84).

But wait!! It gets worse:

In 92-93 there was no OT/SO point. Therefore were they playing using the old system they would have only 7 regulation wins and 4 more ties and thus only 21 points in 38 games.

Using the old system they are on track to get 45 in 82 or 46/47 in 84.

That's 25% worse than the worstest the oil has ever ever been before.

Just to get back to tying for being the worst team in oilers history they are going to have to have a playoff level winning percentage for the remainder of the season.

Just seems impossible that nothing will be done if the oil lose to cgy on the 27th. Is there another organization in all of pro sport that would not terminate its coach at such a juncture - especially in light of the promises the organization made during the off season?

Or....they could get the players to backcheck, stop cheating for offence, shoot the puck, and keep doing these things even when not immediately rewarded for their behaviour.

I think it would be a great gesture on Katz to refund season ticket holders money back , if the Oilers don't make the playoffs next year!!! At least he would know how the season ticket holders have been feeling these past 8 years ,supporting this team and having nothing to show for it, except for financial losses.

You make to much sense. I am fairly certain Mac T will not admit his failure and he will use the "CONTINUITY" card to justify his mistake. This team is a train wreck........ the best thing any of us can do is just ignore the Oiler propaganda lead by that know it all Stauffer and just continue to hound this team until change comes. I am ready to be trashed for this, but whatever.

Maybe its time to think about trading one of the young "untouchables" for some dependable depth. Some sort of a 1 for 3 deal consisting of solid bottom 6 FWD's and 3,4,5 D.

I hate to live in the past but how bad was the Stoll/Greene for Visnovsky trade. At the time I was a huge fan of the deal, but the stability that those two bring and have proven in deep playoff runs in LA after the '06 run.

Ever since Stoll and Greene have been gone we've been searching for adequate replacements, mostly for Stoll (Belanger, Fraser, Smithson) and Greene (Fistric, Peckham, Sutton)

The 2013 version of replacements seem to actually be almost holding their own (Ference and Gordon) but the rest of the depth is horrendous, Jones isn't what he was a few years ago and even in his prime he was a fringe NHLer, Hordichuk, Eager, MacIntyre, Gazdic, Joensuu all showing why they've ended up in the butthole of the NHL.

Lars Eller saying the "Oilers play like a junior team" might actually be a backhanded compliment because none of these guys could play in junior either.

Yakupov had 9 minutes of ice time today. Good on Eakins. Too bad he can't bench everyone who is sloppy defensively and doesn't give effort. Gadzic, Hall, Ference, Perron and Jones can't play all 60 minutes. Eberle is good at calling out his teammates. Too bad his play doesn't speak for him.

Fun fact: Yakupov is on pace to shatter the worst +/- since 1976 even playing extremely sheltered minutes. I wonder if you could get a top 4 defenseman for him? I'd trade him now if you could. The problem is he's the worst player in the entire league despite his potential and I doubt anyone wants to give up much for him.

Life is hell without a couple top pairing blueliners, and a decent 2nd line center.

This isn't the players problem, this just exposes a weak management group. Serious Gord hit the nail on the head when he mentioned the total arrogance in ownership and management. The losing culture starts right there.

Oilers were shut out 3 of last 5 games, scored 4 goals in 5 games. Fire that clown Eakins, he is not doing the team any good. A fan threw a Jersey into the ice after the game, fans have had enough of this crap. Bring in an established coach to run the team. Eakins threw out old Oilers great photos and replaced them with the young guns photos. It's not working they have no identity, it's a shamed to be shut out that many games in a season. Shoot the damn pucks from anywhere all over the ice and it will go in. Look at the Blues 2 goals went in when they shot the pucks towards the net. Wake up boys, we had enough of this craps.

When are we going to finally send Yakupov to the AHL? I remember both Perry and Getzlaf being in a similar funk and going down to the AHL and it turned things around for them big time.

On a side note, I just looked up the 2003 draft and it really makes me pissed off to be an Oiler fan, good choice taking Marc-Antoine Chicken, but at least he wasn't the worst pick... Robert Nilsson and Shawn Belle both went in the first round. HAHA!

The only worse player was Hugh Jessiman... maybe that's the next Oiler FA target, at least he's 6'6.

It's funny just stumbled on an old article on the Perry for Comrie no deal, just another reason to question how Kevin Lowe is not sitting next to Mike Milbury on the hot stove. What a meatball!

Pretty much a done deal, the fans have had enough. Perhaps the Jersey tossing incident will be the last straw for the owning turning a blind eye to a very poorly managed team. Edmonton does not deserve this crap.

This is the first year that I have never bought anything (playing cards to Jerseys)Oiler related. I actually felt bad about it first but now I feel okay with it. No longer will this clown show known as the Mighty Oil will have any of my money.

It has taken me years to get to this point and it may take years (if at all) to reverse my negativity toward my once beloved Oilers.

The players, the coaches, the management and the owner are all responsible for this. I salute every Oil fan whom has had to put up with this garbage for as long as you have.

No disappointment from this cat.Went to be bed expecting a 3-0 shut out. Woke up. 6-0.

Expectations exceeded. Does not take a PHD to figure out where the Oilers need to improve.Need bigger heavier Dmen, and Forwards on their 3rd and 4 th lines who are willing to get dirty.

ST Louis has a plethora of these guys and a coach with more experience in his thumbnail than Eakins has total. Hitch was going to make the Oil look brutal and he did.

Eakins only need look at who is kicking his ass coaching wise to see how little he knows and open his mind to the possibility that he does not know everything. The more I watch the team. The more I see how much further we have to go both on and off the ice.

When a fan throws his jersey on the ice in frustration after another blow-out, that speaks volumes. CBC made sure the nation was made aware if it, and good for them. A number of random thoughts.

1. Yak needs to be sent to OKC. He is adding nothing to the team and makes the mantra of accountability a farce. I hope the Oil management (and I use the term loosely)are not influenced by Larianov's whining from last month. If Yak pouts about the demotion and bolts to the KHL, better to get rid of the cancer now than let it continue to fester.

2. I also suggest that Yak will want a 6 millionish contract similar to RHH to be offered next year. The Oil have set a precedent with No.1s when they gave RNH the money for what was it, 4 goals last year.

3. When the HNIC panel was filling time waiting for Hall to take the fall for the team on After Hours, they got into a heated debate about whether the Oil should de something now or "be patient". The exchange became quite heated. Freideman was up his you know what when he stated the Oils shouldn't trade any of their young talent because they "might be great somewhere else". This topic gets kicked around all the time on this site. Oil cannot be afraid to trade any asset they have, they cannot be paralyzed by fear of what might be.

4. I wonder if the Oil made a mistake when they decided to keep Gagner in stead of Cogs. The Ducks have done a great job with Cogs, giving him a defined role he can thrive on. Oil never really knew what to do with Cogs. They did a good job finding out what his deficiencies were, but didn't seem to understand his strengths.

In my humble opinion this is more or less a "moral victory". 6-0 not bad for the Oilers. Since we have 4 high 1st round picks on Hall, Yaks, the Nuge and Eberle, not bad at all for the kids, right? I was ridiculed whenever I stated that the problem was with the assistant coaches all the time. Since many fans here can't see that I will bury my head in the sand along with you all. Once again, this game was a marginal moral victory. Great all around effort, very indicative of our Oilers. Eakins hiring was a mistake, clearly. The poor guy is way, way above his head. The players dont buy into his system. The assistant coaches all suck. This organization is a friggin' mess. From the coaching staff to the upper management. "There’s one other guy I believe in hockey today who’s still working in the game that has won more Stanley Cups than me, so I think I know a little bit about winning, if there’s ever a concern.” Darryl Katz you are a loser.

Huge props goes out to the fan that threw his jersey onto the ice. We should have a facebook group, and encourage one person to throw on a jersey every game for the rest of the year.

I'm 100% convinced until Kevin Lowe is fired, nothing will change. If I was Lowe, i'd step down. It's embarassing for everyone involved.

People on here keep saying we need a big d man and a few 3rd and 4th liners. Our top 2 lines aren't even close to good enough. If it was just our d and 3rd and 4th line guys that were the problem we wouldn't get shutout this many times.

I love Eberle, but i'd trade him first. Calls out players on his team and is soft with the puck and refuses to shoot. HIs first year he started to believe he was better than he is. Hall, Nuge and Perron would be the only people I wouldn't trade right now.

Gagner, stop chewing on your mouthguard, you're not Patrick Kane, you may as well be his cab driver.

Willis, I think you should start a game by game chart showing how the Oil are tracking against the worst teams in NHL history. I wonder if they have a chance to be the worst of all time?

They are nowhere near the worst ever for one season. However since expansion in '68 the years since the cup run may be among the worst long term records ever.

Am I the only one who finds it typically Canadian that the fan threw his jersey on the ice AFTER the game was over? Heaven forbid he would throw it on the ice during the game - that would have interrupted the drubbing the team was getting and been very impolite.

Also kind of a drag that it didn't spur a flurry of other oilers merchandise onto the ice. Maybe next game...

As for Lowe resigning.

IF ONLY.

Under other circumstances the head coach is the logical one to remove, but in this case Lowe is the one who needs to go - first for the message it sends fans and the players both here and on other teams that the old boys club era has ended (unless messier or some other old boy stiff takes his place) and second for the mid to long term changes that this will mean to the rest of management.

If Lowe had:

1. Some humility 2. Some objectivity 3. Some self-respect 4. Some repect for the fans 5. The ability to see how unpopular he is with fans 6. A clue

He would resign forthwith. (Were you in his shoes wouldn't you resign?)

What a sad state of affairs this has become. My family has season seats and I have not been to a game since the two back-to-back shutout losses to the Leafs and Wings. MacT has to do something soon, and as far as I'm concerned, there are no untouchables, Hall included. This team is too soft. I would like to see more emotion out of Eakins, but it's time to stop pointing fingers at the coaches, this team just doesn't have the personnel to get it done. As for old Six Rings, he should have been fired after allowing Pronger to force a trade. He should step down now!

Ouch. Very ouch baby. I was kinda expecting Nurse to make the cut, ya know all things considered. Well as this team - on a pro rated - basis will finish with no more than 51 pts in April (that's when golf season starts. I hear the Oilers are extremely proficient at that sport). Almost mid-season now and 5 other teams have reached 51 pts!!!! Sam Reinhart or Ekblad will probably seek psychiatric help after the Oilers select them at the draft.....

After last nights loss by the Oilers, criticism is flooding in from every source. The Coach, the players, the HNIC Panel, the MSM, the bloggers and the fans are unanimously critical.

The quintessential statement made by qa fan was throwing their Oiler Jersey on the ice after the game. Given the sport's culture and the pride with which a team jersey is expected to be worn, there can be no more damning statement made by a fan to an organization.

We all have teased MacT about his wanting to make "bold" moves but that is exactly what is required now to transform this franchise.

Johnathon I know it's the day after, but your PREDICATIONS haven't even been close this past 3 weeks plus... Someone, who is presumably around hockey & hockey teams as much as you are, should be a "little closer" in your predications...it isn't a reach to say the Oilers will loose these days, or even this year, but even I knew the Oilers would get hammered by more than 3 goals. The only way they wouldn't is if the top line put in a bunch of their chances...

That brave soul who threw his jersey in disgust on the ice. Why can't we do the same and mail our jerseys back to KLOWN?

@Ed in PV

Cogs needed to learn a few lessons about what type of player he needed to be in order to be successful. Problem is we didn't have the tools to train him properly, thus he needed a change.

I like what Weeks said best on HNIC they need veterans to teach the kids about accountability. And the culture of the Oilers the past few years has been to call the veterans out and dismiss them as soon as possible as being irrelevant. This culture has been cancerous to the organization and it started with Mr. Lowe. I know some media pundits like to dismiss these anti- Lowe comments, however with the purging of more veteran leadership this season, it appears to me as though the culture has not changed.

Although some veterans have poor corsi and poor advanced stats, they do bring value to a team!!!

We should throw all our old merchandise on the ice.

Also bring all the pennies that you have around your home. This would create a real Mess. Do it right after the ice is cleared. Thousands of Pennies. Raining down on the ice would look fantastic.

Hey guys. How did the Edmonton Oilers do in their hockey game last night?

I remember several of you explaining to me that the Hemsky contract wasn't bad because it was only two years. Should KLowe sign Hemmer to a one year extension for say, seven million dollars?

Also, who do you think is the better hockey player: Sydney Crosby or Yaksy?

Thanks guys !!

First off, props to the jersey being thrown. I didn't see it, stopped watching after the 2nd. Wish I would've saw that.

Playing shinny with my family this morning. I'm going without a jersey. I can't bring myself to sport my #5 Ladi Smid jersey, mostly because of the logo on the front. Maybe mailing my old one to the Oilers with a pic of me in a new red #3 jersey would send a message too...
