Much has been made of the Oilers jersey that came flying out of the stands and landed on the ice on Saturday against the Blues. Never mind that it was probably the fastest moving thing in an Oilers jersey the entire night, this isn't the way to protest the current state of the team.

We can totally understand the thinking behind whipping the ol' Blue and Orange onto the ice. The Oilers are flat out brutal and the 2,502 management types employed by Kay-Z seem more out of touch than ever, doddering about in the press box night after night and peering down with deer in the headlights looks.

They aren't exactly addressing the needs of the team or the fans who continue to trudge through biblical snow storms to Rexall Place or forgo watching documentaries on Netflix in favour of tuning into Oilers games. The players themselves seem about as interested in winning as that team that gets trotted out against the Harlem Globetrotters.

We totally understand the rage that generates. Sooner or later protests are going to begin in earnest and that has to be expected by anyone with a functioning cerebral cortex.

But throwing the jersey on the ice? That ain't the play.

PRIDE

The Oilers jersey represents all Oilers of all time. By throwing a jersey on the ice at Rexall you are throwing Gretzky's league wide retired 99 on the ice. You are throwing Bill Ranford's 30 that stopped so many sure goals so long ago, You are throwing the 39 Doug Weight wore that year he had 104 points and blew all our minds in the process. You are throwing the 21 Jason Smith wore as he blocked shot after shot with his front teeth.

It's what hundreds of now forgotten players sweated and bled for over the years and the 2013-14 Oilers stinking out the joint again doesn't mean that you should spit in the face of all these soldiers and dishonour their pride and effort in the process. They deserve better,

There is literally nothing the current half assed Oilers squad can do to diminish what the Champions that came before them have accomplished and I for one will never lose my pride in those players and the teams that wore the jersey before them.

GRIM TIMES THESE

Sadder than the scoreboard on Saturday night, the knowledge all of HNIC just watched the Oil embarass themselves yet again or all the empty seats was this scene we (illegally most likely) captured as we were filing out of Rexall Place.

This poor lil kiddo was a few rows in front of us and seemed quite upset at the Oilers getting shelled. At the end of the game she was very animated and it was only the efforts of her Dad chanelling the leadership of Jason Smith that ultimately talked her off the ledge.

It was quite the heartbreaking scene to witness.

At least we are all adults to some degree. It's the children that we feel bad for who come to the game in their finest lil Oilers jerseys with the unreasonable expectations of kids today - see a hockey game worth watching and her Oilers win. She doesn't understand rebuilds, timing good teams for new arenas or assessing team needs that haven't changed for the 7th consecutive season.

It's a good thing her dad had the character of Jason Smith to call on and wasn't wearing a Nilsson jersey or that of a lesser man.

So spazz on twitter or here on the Nation until you feel some mild relief. Send Kevin Lowe a platinum membership to Monster.com and wish him good job hunting if you like. Refuse to fill your recent prescription for life saving medication because you don't want to support Daryl Katz any further. Reasonable people are reaching their breaking point we totally get this.

Just don't toss jerseys on the ice.

Shoutout to @camrolls for getting me to write this rant.

Better times lay ahead.

Merry Christmas Nation.

It's easy to blame a fan for throwing the history and pride of the crest away, but he's not. He's the one having the balls to call the oilers bluff. The fact is that management, players, and coaches are the ones ACTUALLY throwing history into the fire here. The fans are showing up, paying money, doing their part.

The jersey on the ice was a mirror image of what this franchise has become.

The organization is the one throwing that history onto the ice. Fans are helpless.

First, hash tags don't work on the nation network.

Second, do you think the fan was trying to solve world hunger by tossing the jersey? I don't get why you think he has problems differentiating between real life problems and sport team related issues? You branched out in to a dark territory there of not making a lick of sense.

Really far out fetched idea here but...

Let's strip the crest off the players jersey's. Make them earn it back. The only way to earn it back is decided by ON POLLZ.

I don't know what to do with Lowe, MacTavish, Eakins, and the scouting staff though. Wait, something just came to me.... FIRE THEM ALL!!!

If everyone who owned a Kevin Lowe jersey chucked it on the ice that would send a message. Lowe is awfully arrogant for a man who has presided over the worst franchise in the NHL.

His comment on his six rings is the most abhorrent to me. Let's just forget that he was a passenger on a juggernaut for a moment. Which of these rings was won in a managerial capacity?

His rings as a player have zero relevance to his abilities as an executive. It would be akin to Pizza Hut hiring me as their CEO just because I can put away an entire large pepperoni by myself. One has nothing to do with the other.

But you've proven yourself wanting something as you are on an Oiler fan site. So enjoy flamernation or whatever it's called.

Nope. Stop living in the past. The Oil are the laughing stock of the league. Please tell me HOW can we possibly be 6 (possibly 10 with their games in hand) points behind the Flames? Didn't they lose their heart and soul Iggy and Mikka, thus reducing them to full rebuild mode? There is NO WAY that should ever happen. Somehow, we have gotten WORSE than last year. We are comically easy to play against. Absolutely sickening.

If you're referring to Smid, I have it on good authority that he had asked for a trade because the locker room situation had become unbearable. When Eakins told Smid that he had been traded, it was actually the first time that he had ever spoken to him. That might give you some insight on how this team is run. Its no secret he plays favorites. I didn't realize that his non favorites were ostracized. Smid was a good guy and a great team mate. When Yak gets run out of town, remember this. Not a favorite.

Wanye HAD to write this article before fans on this site decided to organize something rash like a mass jersey throwing or an ad in the Edmonton journal. Like it or not but Wanye needs his non-MSM site to still have some good favor with the Oilers otherwise he'll lose access and possibly sponsors. While he may secretly agree with throwing a jersey on the ice, he needs to protect himself first by stating to everyone to NOT do it...

I bought a Gagner jersey in 07 or 08. They were new form fitting jerseys and I was sold that this little guy was going to be the offensive catalyst the Oilers needed. He was a small skilled forward, but the team wasn't soft, it had Moreau, and Horcoff (in his prime), Stoll, Souray (before he complained about management), etc...there was toughness there, not to mention good goaltending in Roloson.

But I bought a dream that Gagner's time in an Oilers jersey would see a team improved and become a contender. But the team has gone completely the wrong direction, and every time they show a glimmer of going in the right direction, they show many more of going in the wrong direction. And it will take so long for this to get better that Gags will be traded or leave via free agency.

HOW is throwing his jersey on the ice have anything to do with Gretzky? Sorry, but I'm of the mindset that his jersey represents one of the ugliest times in the history of the Oilers, and I feel that if I were to make the decision to throw it on the ice it would say to the team that I'm done with this version of the Oilers.

Actually, please do whatever you want as a fan. Let's take a step back to reality here for a second. This is a sporting team that does actually nothing to generally benefit society. It is a game that is meant to distract the masses. It doesn't cure cancer or make you live longer or create products that have innate lasting value.

There is no sanctity to a uniform of a sporting team. There is no reverence because a certain individual wore it in the past. There is no unbound code of honor. There is no quitting on the team if you decide to take it off.

A sweater is a piece of merchandise that has zero inherent value other than the value that the NHL has fooled all of us into thinking it has.

If you paid for something you have the right to do what you will with it. If you want to throw your jersey in the ice, it is your right and you shouldn't be called out by Dallas Eakins or Darren Dreger or Wayne.

Stop being sheeple and start living for yourselves.

Maybe, the current Oiler roster should look in the mirror before they hit the ice and ask themselves " Am I worthy of wearing this historic crest on my chest that was worn in the past by so many NON- Quitters.

I wouild suggest jerseys, without an Oiler crest, and a "yellow stripe" running down the back for this current roster.. at least until they learn how to play 60 minute hockey games.

I only come by to indulge in some Schadenfruede. Thanks for being passionate Oiler fans. Your loyalty fuels the reign of incompetence that exists from the top down. Some rich kid stokes his ego with the purchase of the home town team and has no concept of what it takes to run a franchise. As long as you are talking, visiting this site or others , complaining about the Oilers I can relish in your misery. Please never let DK hear crickets, indifference or closed wallets. Bless all of you and Merry Christmas.

If the team's fortunes don't turn around at all in the near future, its going to look like the teddy bear toss at the WHL games with all of the Oiler's paraphernalia flying over the glass.

Biggest motivator is empty seats. Patrick Laforge can't blame it on the weather forever.

Paper bags are going to start showing up as well, well........ until the Katz army at the rink starts confiscating them at the entrance doors.

Jerseys thrown on ice = bad

Hats and bras thrown on ice = good

Beer spilled when we get scored against during the PP = bad

Moral victories = good

Love you too Reaperfunkss!!!!

My favorite South Park is when they did the Rush tribute!

"I'm Geddy Lee and I'll sing what the hell that I want... now 1-2-3 1-2-3"
