THE EDMONTON OILERS LIVE A LOTTO LIFE

Lowetide
March 09 2013 09:27AM

It's a strange morning for Oilers Nation. The things we might like to do--bag skate the management team, for instance--are not available to us. The team has not delivered entertainment for two games now, the coach is running out of positives (and baby that's saying something) and we are here. Again. What can we do?

SERENITY NOW!

The job that has to be done now belongs to a higher power. No,no not him--Daryl Katz! Robin Brownlee wrote a terrific article this week that put things in perspective:

  • Brownlee: Given the record over the previous 11 seasons and what I'm seeing play out so far this season, I know what I'd do if I was signing the cheques in Edmonton and I didn't have a playoff race on my hands right down to the wire – Lowe and Tambellini would be relieved of their duties. That call, of course, belongs to Katz, and, given his relationship with Lowe, I don't see that happening. Tambellini, coming off an underwhelming two-year extension as a mandate, will be the fall guy if there is one. That could open the door for MacTavish, now the senior vice-president of hockey operations, but that's an item for another day.

Robin framed the issue nicely, and I do think this would happen in the spring (after the season) if it happens at all. I know there's hot and cold running anger in all Edmonton and area homes this morning over the town team, but a hot streak (and we know they're capable) changes the mood in a heartbeat and the job of an owner is to look at the long term.

Robin's thoughts above do seem to have a strong logic to them, though. How long do you allow a rebuild to turn the corner? Is this Chicago or is this Columbus?

HOW BAD IS IT?

For Oiler fans this is all too familiar. We're reaching a point where the lockout is a sweet memory, where other fanbases no longer use their "A" material against us, where someone considers suing someone else for "cruel and unusual punishment."

Collectively, we're here:

And there's not much we can do about it. The Edmonton Oilers are telling us there is no help available--no center to shore up that position, no defenseman to help there--so we're just going to have to endure another season of losing, another night of Steve Tambellini at the lottery show, another spring of knowing more about the draft's first two rounds than we should without drawing a paycheque.

WHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN?

The road trip to hell lived up to its reputation. The Oilers have been outmatched in the last two games and will head into Chicago facing a Hawks team newly motivated. The major stories for Edmonton were supposed to be Hall going supernova, Yak-Schultz fighting it out for the Calder and much merriment over passing Calgary in the standings.

The actual stories have been 5x5 scoring disappearing, Whitney's foot and Horcoff's knuckle. The rebuild began in 2010 and we should expect results in 2015. That's the message here.

I don't see much evidence the Oilers ownership and management feel any kind of pressure to improve. Do you?

Maybe they really like lotteries?

All is not lost. There is a tremendous amount of talent here, but adding an enforcer isn't going to help this team. They need actual NHL players, and the management team to find them. I expect Craig MacTavish will be playing a more prominent role in the organization soon. He'll have to trade in his NCAA scouting pass for a bigger office and no sleep.

We wait.

--

Lowetide at High Noon hits Team 1260 today noon to 2 Edmonton time. Our guests:

  • Terry Jones from the Edmonton Sun. We'll talk brier and the Oilers, specifically this painful road trip. We'll also discuss implications of another lost season on players and management.
  • Bruce McCurdy from the Cult of Hockey. We'll discuss his zone exits and what they are telling us about the Oilers, the current state of the team and who gets a passing grade through the season's first half.
  • Kirk Luedeke from Redline Report. Kirk has been a friend of Team 1260's since the John Short days, and is a splendid resource for the draft. We'll talk about some of the impressive NY/New England kids this year and get an idea about the depth of this year's draft compared to a year ago.
  • Darcy "Woodguy" McLeod from all parts Oilogosphere. Darcy has posted guest articles at Copper and Bue and at Lowetide, the latest being an exceptional defense of Magnus Paajarvi this week. We'll talk about Paajarvi, measuring success via shots on goal and what the numbers say about fixing the Oilers.
  • Neal Livingston, from Tend the Farm. One of the brilliant people we've had a chance to encounter since the Oilers moved their farm team to OKC, Neal's site is a joy and a valuable resource. We'll talk about the season for Barons fans, and I'll ask if any of the current Barons looks like they are matriculating toward an NHL job.

Hope you tune in.

Dear Santa Please Help (I've chosen Santa over Katz, he seems more real)

Over the last 6 years, I've started giving my season tickets away 1/2 way through the year (Jan) because the product on the ice has been to brutal to justify the effort and monies needed to attend games. Every year The Oilers tell me to hang in there, this year the product on the ice will be faster stronger, and more talented, but every year ends up with the same results!!! The Oilers keep telling me this years first rounder is the one, gonna be the one to make all the difference. First it was Gags, then Ebs, then Pajami, then Hallsy, then The Nuuge, now Yakapov. Every year that draft pick ends up being a smaller offensive forward that after the first 10 games gets punished and bullied around the rink for 60 minutes!!! So every year The Oilers tell me not to worry, they're getting an enforcer to protect our baby Oilers. Every year The Oilers tell me the enforcer can't keep up, can't play at the NHL level. I just have one wish this year, as I dearly miss going to a full season of hockey I've paid for. If we finish in the bottom 5 again, COULD YOU PLEASE DRAFT SOMEONE WITH A LITTLE TALENT, SIZE AND GRIT? Now I'm not saying these 6 picks aren't good picks, and I'm pretty damn sure all of them would be in the NHL with or without The Oilers, but what I am saying is WAKE THE FACK UP!!! Who wouldn't want a 6'2" 200 pound North American born center named Alex Galchenyuk over Yakapov right now? I've more requests for Oiler stupidity that I'll address at a later date Peace Out Santa

John Candy SCTV circa 80's

This needs to be done to all but 4 of the 5 kids.

One of them has to go.To much smurf not enough heart.

Clean house in management. Not the trainers and equipment guys this time.

There is BUILD in rebuild. That means a whole team not a bunch of high draft pick smurfs.

No accountability anywhere in the franchise.

I don't necessarily want Ralph to go - just have 'Assistant' added to his title.

I thought when Mac T left that was the right decision, I was not happy to see him return like many of this site, thought it was another step in the wrong direction for the organization because that shipped sailed.

However if this organization is going to anything that remotely makes sense it would be to bring him in for the short term to show the fans that this organization is willing to do something to show that they are trying to compete. I think if they loose out the rest of the way their is no way they can throw Krueger to the wolves once they come back to Edmonton.

I can't help but wonder who I want more, McKinnon or Jones. I got to say I can't believe we may land another top 5 pick. Can't decide whether to be excited or angry,

The lesson here is you can get all the #1 picks in the world but if you don't surround the kids with the right cast, you've got kids.

The cold water to the face for me was when we lost nearly every center and ST didn't get on the phone, instead hoping the farm and forcing wingers into the position would cover it.

Second red flag was passing on Hamerlik. A veteran D allowing us to send someone away now and then replace during the summer - this made sense on a leaky club. But alas, it appeared ST has elected to go with the D we started unsuccessfully with.

Not willing to admit he was wrong brings ST one step closer to the ultimate denial GM - Jay Feaster.

Yea, it would be nice to rebuild the bridge to Buffalo. They are in a similar postion so a multi- player swap could help both teams. Remember when Chicago was an old trading partner? Unfortuntely I think Tambo probably gets sent to voicemail when he calls there now. Who knows - maybe Chicago will start a 24 game losing streak ~

I agree, those saying that Horcoff will help have not watched the Oil play too much and don't realize there are often available guys in the off season with his skillsets. I think people are trying to pinpoint what is wrong with the team when they say things that don't make sense, and its more then an average third line checking center that will fix the multiple holes in this ship. This teams the same with him or not with him and its time to cut bait and use 5.5 million to fill the line-up with players who can make a difference.

This off season has to be choosing who stays and who goes. Hopefully a new management will be in place that can properly assess the needs of the team going forward. This teams taking a step behind this season, and the end of the rebuild is going to be at least 2 more years.

He sits on his hands all season long only to get up to walk to the podium to select the first overall selection at the draft. At least our enthusiasm was justified, we're sitting comfortably in a playoff spot and playing some good hockey. And Oiler fans, don't kid yourself about the Oilers rebuild starting in 2010. If I remember correctly, you had 3 1st round selections in '07, one of which was a 6th overall. To most (I guess just not to Edmontonians) this was signify a rebuild. The fall from cloud 9 must have damaged your collective brain.

That's exactly the problem with you fans. Its not who you have, its how a team is assembled. Your team is softer then butter left on the kitchen counter overnight. Your team is laughable. They also have Sid. If we follow their timeline we still have two more lottery picks to go before things start to turn around. Watching last night was painful, but you can't rush a rebuild, we aren't the Blue Jackets yet...

Two points:

One, two of those lottery picks were Crosby and Malkin. Two of the best players in the league.

Two, Pittsburgh fired their GM prior to drafting Jordan Staal. The new GM, Ray Shero, made several shrewd moves to catapult them to the Stanley Cup. For example, they added Marian Hossa along the way.

I hate to break the bad news to you, but the Oilers are closer to the Blue Jackets than the Penguins.

For those thinking we will again get the pick of the litter, think again.

With the draft lottery changes this year the Oilers will have, at best, a 25% chance of winning the lottery. And that's if we finish dead last.

Bagging the #1 overall pick is a non-guarantee this year. I doubt management has figured this out yet.

"Bagging the #1 overall pick is a non-guarantee this year. I doubt management has figured this out yet."

To me it is paramount that now the season is all but gone, whatever skill management has is directed to maximizing our pick, and if they were smart, moving heaven and earth to go after CBJ's or Florida's first.

I don't believe it can't be done (likely a post season deal), but perhaps not by our crew. Both teams need offense and salary, we can provide a solid multi player bump that would be a benefit.

If they need two more lotto picks, do it in a deep draft and move on.

Sadly I don't think they realize how long most forwards are peak and when. Not many guys have 11 or 12 100 point seasons that are in the back of Lowe's mind, let alone multi 40 or 50 goal years. It worries me that they may not realize this and think they have 5-6 years to get things done. It isn't the best case scenario.

Why do people think MacT should be fired? He's been here for what? 6 months? And all he does is give reports on NCAA players.

If we are to fire someone fire the people responsible. Also maybe we should line match RNH, Yak, and someone else. Let them play 2nd/3rd pairing defenders, if nothing but to get their confidences back.

I am not arguing that the Oilers are the second coming of the Penguins. I also agree that none of our first overall picks is in the same realm as Crosby and Malkin, arguably the two best players in the league. What I am saying is that the Oilers have some good pieces that someday will make us a contender, but these turnarounds don't happen overnight, they take years. In the Penguins case the trip from start of rebuild to Stanley Cup was 8 years. Although we have missed the playoffs for the past six seasons, the rebuild didn't start in earnest until three years ago during the 09/10 season. I think it's too early call our rebuild a failure, and too early to compare ourselves to the Blue Jackets who haven't won a playoff game in their 12 years of existence.

8 years to cup, but 5 years to playoffs. Same with Chicago. Drafted Keith in 2002, long playoff run in 2008. Started to win in '07. So 6 years to competence.

We sold the farm in '07 (Smyth, Bergeron), so really this is when our "rebuild" started. Even if you assume it started in '08, we are still 5 years in.

This is not looking good.

@Rod from Viking

Rod, don't even get me started. Everything this organization does is senseless from top to bottom. It's sickening.

Oilers signed Sheldon Souray to a massive deal the summer of 2007 in the hopes of competing for playoff spot. That following season the Oilers were just 3 points out of the playoffs. Just because your team misses the playoffs doesn't mean they are rebuilding. Look at Calgary, would you say that team is in the middle of a rebuild? It wasn't until the Pat Quinn year of 09/10 that management officially blew the team up and purposefully took a dive in the standings to gain top talent from the draft. We have watched a sub playoff team every year since 2006, but make no mistake the true rebuild is only 3 years old.

For those of you telling Mapleleafer that he is trolling. He isn't. The Leafs are going to win the cup this year. Book it.

Maybe if you had a great GM like Burke you'd be in the playoffs right now too. It is kind of pathetic that you guys haven't even iced a decent team in years. I feel sorry for you. It's bad enough that you don't live in the Mecca of Hockeytown but your team sucks to boot.

I wouldn't want any of your players. Except Joey Moss, he can play on my team any day.
