YOU'RE MY BLUE SKY, YOU'RE MY SUNNY DAY

A week ago, Craig MacTavish talked about adding size to the supreme skill in the Oilers top 6F. If we made a "wish list" of possible additions, how close can we come to naming the actual target?

POSSIBLES

  1. W Viktor Stalberg (27 years old) 47, 9-14-23 (UFA this summer, expiring $875k cap hit). I've listed him ahead of Bickell because he can play both wings. Stalberg is a fine winger with a nice range of skills, and could play on the 2 and 3 lines effectively. A target for sure.
  2. L Brian Bickell (27 years old) 48, 9-14-23 (UFA this summer, expiring $540k cap hit). This is an insane underpay for value. 2.30 5x5/60 (4th on team). Bickell's size/speed combination makes him an outstanding option for the Oilers. Big strong, possessing two-way ability and should be able to step into a larger offensive role.
  3. F Nathan Horton (27 years old) 43, 13-9-22 (UFA this summer, expiring $4M cap hit). 1.95 5x5/60 (7th on team). Big man has some concussion issues but can also play more than one position (a key for MacT) and is certainly very physical. Horton on a line with Nuge and Hall? Gagner and Yakupov? Interesting.
  4. W Nikolai Kulemin (26 years old) 48, 7-16-23 (UFA 2014, $2.8M cap hit). 2.00 5x5/60 (5th on team). An excellent 2-way option, not the physical player hoped for but certainly a player who can impact the game with and without the puck. Toronto seems to be indifferent about Kulemin, I think he might come at a reasonable price.
  5. L Tomas Vanek (29 years old) 38, 20-21-41 (one year left at $7.14M). 2.64 5x5/60 (1st on team). THIS is an attractive option, if only because the pricetag would be less than some of the players below. Vanek is not a physical player, not at all--but I've included him because he's simply too talented to keep off the list. If the Oilers could get him for just picks or prospects it would be worth every penny.
  6. F Jakub Voracek (23 years old) 48, 22-24-46 ($4.25M cap hit through 2016 summer) 2.58 5x5/60 (1st on team). Ranked lower on the list because the cost would be dear. Voracek was drafted right after Gagner, and is a skilled winger with size. He could be an outstanding addition, but the cost (in terms of trade assets) makes him a far less attractive trade target.
  7. L Raffi Torres (31 years old) 39, 7-11-18 (UFA this summer, $1.75M cap hit) 2.15 5x5/60 (2nd on team). Hear me out, please. Raffi isn't a perfect hockey player, but he can impact the game. Torres is a physical player with skill, and can move up and down the depth chart as needed. Kind of a poor man's Esa Tikkanen.
  8. L Dustin Penner (30 years old) 33, 2-10-12 (UFA this summer $3.25M cap hit) 1.85 5x5/60 (4th on team). Hear me out volume two. Penner playd well with both Sam Gagner and Ales Hemsky, and I believe he might be a perfect fit for this Oiler club. If they could get him at a reasonable price, this could be music!

WHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN?

Who knows, really. However, if the Oilers are looking for a bigger forward with offensive abilty this summer, I think Horton, Stalberg and Bickell is a very good place to start.

Sail on, Ales.

Apologies, in advance, for the long post, Nation.

One day, the girl and I are at the movies waiting for the show to begin. In the row behind us, and I think we've all had this happen, I suddenly hear someone just LAUNCH themselves into a seat, like they own the joint. Sort of a sliding KA-BLAM as the entire section of seats gets rocked. Within three seconds, this guy initiates the most inane conversation in the history of verbal communication with the poor, extremely unlucky, bastard who just happens to be sitting quietly next to him. Without relaying too much of the horror of that experience, I'll just say that the "highlights" of that exchange included details of the gentleman's "rectal problems", and a fascinating ten-minute plus account of how he and a friend scored a sweet life-sized theatre lobby cutout of Ben Affleck some years ago. "Yeah, we barely got him into my mom's car, and his head was hanging out the window, but, man, it was SO worth it to get him into my basement."

The girl, with train wreck-like fascination, wanted to look back at what was happening, but then I remembered the story of Lot's wife, and, for the one and only time, whispered a command to her. "No! Don't look! He HAS his prey! His fate is sealed. 'We ken do nuthin' fer ya, son.'"

Eventually, the victim stopped saying "Cool.", politely, every 30 seconds, and refused to engage the guy at all. No matter what he tried. And he tried! Oh, how he tried!

Soon... silence.

Moral of the story: don't engage creepy idiots, and everybody happy, happy, happy! No names, of course! Just advice, should a similar situation ever arise on the shores of the beloved Nation!

What you meant to say was ......

"Boston Has 6.6M left with only 17 players signed. This includes, Jagr, Horton, Ference, Rask. Players which made about 14M last year. They also would need to sign several role players. They will get 4M of injury relief from Savard though. This still leaves 3.4M to shed plus perhaps 2-3M for role players and maybe 1M raise for Rask " (about 7M to shed)

.......Thats what you meant right???

I have taken up a new role on the interweb recently ...that of a troll, a part time troll...just to see and feel what it's like and really specifically because of how much time i have spent reading you and your full of yourself comments...I just wanted to go out and find enough nerve endings somewhere, anywhere to see what i can do to simply entertain myself since MY team bowed out...I've been reading visiting and commenting on a spinoff Canucks site since just before the playoffs started... on the night of the Oilers last game when they beat up on an AHL Vancouver Canucks team 7-2...i'm saying ANYTHING that might garner the attention that even a part time troll needs, so the more hostile the environment the better the practise...I started with calling that Sedin a cheat because of his 22second shift to carry on his IronMan streak...I said you çan't brag when you cheat like that...that got my comment 46 negative thumbs down votes out of 55 so I said there must be 9 voters on my side... I called Vinyo an idiot for letting LouLou hang out to dry in that last game and that got me another 32 out of 41 negative thumbsdown votes... i was hooked ...i began to predict a Sharks series victory before the series even started because as a troll I can say anything right? ...it's the internet ...soooo when they lost game one I WAS IN HEAVEN!!! heaven i tell you!!! ... i trotted out my best karma blasts and fully embraced the cruel indifference of the hockeys gawds shining down at this most momentous time in the Canucks franchise history...52 negative votes from 67 of their faithful came my way and i could almost feel the hair start to grow on the palms of my hands...i coulda been entering troll nirvana ...do you get that feeling sometimes ??? when y'just know how much your making people get all bent outta shape? it's just...well...thrilling isn't it?! I have been accused of being a flames fan ...then an oiler fan...more negative thumbs down votes yippeee!!! said i wasn't a flames fan and that i didn't live in edmonton...so always remember bud don't lie if you're gonna be a happy troll...my last comment that time really got me in trouble though ...i asked everyone to think of a word that rhymes with suck...well...that was a line I'LL never cross again ... GAME 2...before I entered the site with more of more I warned their fandom of how the ides of may would be at the forefront soon and the players should really start to consider making tee times ... 27 of 32 more bad votes ...and then the question of the day for this intrepid troll was how Kesler must have shot his load in that game and there would be no more of this so called Beast Factor their side had boasted...gawd i live for thumbsdown don't you D? memo to wanye ...y'gotta get those thumbs-up and thumbs-down buttons thingys here, they're great!!! ...in closing i want to say how invigorating being a troll is when the time is right and you have a big enough audience with enough exposed nerve endings to fondle and like the juice from... if i was to do this gig on a daily basis [like you do] i don't think i'd continue to get off on the tragic expense there is to be paid...obviously it's thankless task i have taken on here while in the business of being a partime troll...

Chicago is closer to the cap but rte-signing Stalberg and Bickell is easily accommodated,.

Boston has $6.6 M in cap space and will buy out Savard making 10.6 M available. With that $10.6 M they have to sign 2 Goalies, 2 Defensemen, 3 Forwards.

Let's assume their number 1 priority is Rask, I can't see him signing for less than $6M, and he would be a huge RFA target for teams with space if Boston delays on that. For instance, if a team offered him $8M that would leave the Bruins with less than the league minimum to fill out their roster, forcing a trade.

That leaves $4.6 M left for 1 Goalie, 2 Defensemen, 3 Forwards - that is .77M per player, which is barely over the league minimum.

All of the above says they don't sign Horton. Do some research DSF.

Chicago has $2M, they will buy out Olesz giving them $3.1M less the $.9M that comes off the cap hit when the player is buried. Giving them $4.2 M to sign 1 Goalie & 1 Forward. I would suggest they may also buy out Montador bringing in $2.8M. Giving Chicago $7M to spend on 1 D, 1 G & 1 F. Given that Stalberg is worth in the $2-3M range. That leaves $4M to resign Kruger and a back up goalie.

So if Stalberg wants to sign with Chicago I think he does. But Horton will not sign with Boston unless Boston decides to use a 2nd buyout.

With cap issues unable to sign their playiers, I expect a lot of UFA. Buyouts should add even more, which make MacT's first few months interesting. I can't even hear you out on Penner though. This is the same Penner MacT benched. And even more importent MacT said he want to change the culture in the dressing room, so adding a player (Penner) he has called out for lack of effort seems impossilbe

I'm not agreeing with everything DSF has said here, but his point about Penner is valid.

I think if you got the truth out of both Penner and Mac-T, I think it go both ways.

There is no way Mac-T wants Penner and there's equally no room in Penner's heart for Mac-T.

I think Penner ends up back with the Ducks.

Myself, I personally don't have a lot of love for recycling old players through the team, it didn't work the first time.

This years list of free agents is just sad. There's no real upgrade for defense or goalies. I'd be happy if they could land Horton. It looks like the best way to get a player of need is by overpaying by trading picks and players. If people thought trade deadline day was boring wait till free agency......yikes. I hope they trade whatever it takes to get mackinnon

Because a high end pick won't move the needle on this team next year. MacT's mandate is to make the team better NOW.

If anything I wouldn't be surprised to see the Oilers trade their #7 plus a player (Hemsky no doubt) for one of those pieces.

Great article LT, I do think Clarkson could be the main target as well as at least one of the Blackhawk's you mentioned, it looks like game over for the Canucks and should be for (D)own (S)tairs (F)reak.

Isn't Jagr powerforwardish? He's big, strong, and nearly impossible to get off the puck, and he and Hemmer are fellow country-men.

If he signed for Dallas I don't see why he wouldn't sign for us, and he would have so many useful little tips for all our younger, and even some of our more veteranish players.

Sports related : THUMBS UP TO EDMONTON NATIVE CHARLES FIBKE ! His horse GOLDEN SOUL came in second in the Kentucky Derby . He expects the horse will do even better at the longer distances of the Preakness and Belmont Stakes races .

I hope we can sign bickell, stalberg for about 3 mill a piece (or whatever) and Horton or clarkson for 5. If we want these players we need to overpay unfortunately.

Then use hemsky and paajarvi for some help on the blue line. Not a fan of usin the 7th but would for the right dman. I'd also like to trade gagner for a bigger two way centre. Shawn Mattias would be intriguing. It wouldn't be a one for one trade but just throwing out an obtainable name perhaps.

Bickell made $600K this year and had 23 points while Stalberg made $800K and had 23 points as well. I would be ecstatic if the Oilers could sign them but there is no way we should pay either of them $3M.

DSF thinks he is the smartest person in the room. All it takes is the rest of us to prove he is not.If everyone is smarter than DSF and not engage him.We all win. Even Lowetide got sucked in this thread, that does not happen often.

If you don't feed the troll they will go elsewhere for their nourishment.

It is up to all of us.

Classic case of irony - I have no idea what you are trying to say in the second paragraph of your post, as it is rife with errors, both grammatical and in spelling. Was that on purpose?

Madjam is trying to explain that people get punished on blogs for spelling and grammar errors, he would hate to see this place do the same.

His point is, English is his second language, but he's a huge Oiler!

I also agree... Long time reader and rare poster who is ready to find alternative sources for Oilers news on account of DSF's rampant abuse of the comment board

I think he should stay. There is always someone weak minded enough to comment. I find it entertaining that someone always gives in. It pure genious. Many have said you wanna get rid of him don't comment, but always a few do over and over again.

DSF is welcome in my books. I got a soft spot in my heart for this mommies teet sucking basement dwelling green leotard inbred my team worships the conference finals basement dwelling troll. Your alright....
